Akita: which accommodation base suits your trip?

Use Akita Station as a base for the park and harbour, or stay in Kakunodate for separate house and Lake Tazawa days. If dividing nights between the areas, choose your Shinkansen for the accommodation-change day. Plans start at local stations; arrange airport travel and flights separately.

Choose the sights you want to see first

Choose Senshu Park for an arrival-day walk or Selion for sea and harbour views. Choose Kakunodate for house interiors and local crafts, or compare the lake loop bus for Lake Tazawa and the Tatsuko statue. Ishiguro House’s last ordinary visiting day is 30 November 2026. For later trips, check Aoyagi and Kawarada’s operation instead.

Itineraries by trip length

These eight itineraries start at local stations. First choose where to stay in Akita and Kakunodate and whether to change accommodation. Shorten first-day visits for late arrival and final-day visits for early departure. Arrange airport journeys separately.

2 days / 1 night

See the park and harbour on separate days from Akita Station, or two houses on separate days in Kakunodate. Both plans keep one base and exclude lake travel.

3 days / 2 nights

For park and samurai houses, stay one night in Akita and one in Kakunodate. For houses and lake scenery, stay two nights in Kakunodate with a Lake Tazawa day trip.

4 days / 3 nights

To include city walks, stay one night in Akita followed by two in Kakunodate. With three nights in Kakunodate, you can visit the houses and lake and see the craft museum on departure day, but skip the craft museum for a morning departure.

5 days / 4 nights

To include harbour views, stay two nights in Akita and two in Kakunodate, separating the harbour day from your accommodation move. With four nights in Kakunodate, you can give the houses, crafts and lake separate days, with no new sightseeing before final-day departure.

Choosing transport and accommodation

Check before taking the Lake Tazawa loop bus

Choose a Lake Tazawa loop service with sightseeing stops and plan return JR services together. Services marked ● in the operator’s timetable do not run on weekends, public holidays or designated holiday periods; not every bus connects with the Shinkansen. Large luggage such as big suitcases is restricted. This itinerary uses short walks at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine before reboarding the same bus. Check extra fares to switch to a later service. Plan lunch after returning to the station rather than during a sightseeing stop.

Finding accommodation near the station

Compare Hotel Metropolitan Akita for a property connected to Akita Station, or Hotel B4T for a stay beside Kakunodate Station. B4T uses self check-in and provides no breakfast. Check room rates and conditions in each hotel’s official guidance.

Akita–Kakunodate e-ticket reference versus your actual payment

The regular-season JR Shinkansen e-ticket table lists adult ordinary-class reserved seats between Akita and Kakunodate at JPY 2,870 each way or JPY 5,740 return. Adding JPY 1,000 for two houses gives a JPY 6,740 reference subtotal. Distinguish this from paper-ticket prices or an actual sale quote for your date. Ekinet registration, booking and a linked transport IC card for each traveller are required; prices vary by season and booking product. Accommodation, meals, station access and travel before and after the trip are excluded.

Where can a JR pass cover accommodation changes and lake visits?

The JR EAST PASS can be used on the Akita Shinkansen between Akita and Kakunodate and between Kakunodate and Tazawako. Reserve seats first and check that outbound and return dates fall within its consecutive validity period. Ugo Kotsu lake buses and Akita Chuo Kotsu Selion buses are excluded. Ordinary tickets can also be used; compare other JR journeys before deciding whether a pass saves money. An original non-Japanese passport is required. The JR EAST PASS is not restricted to temporary visitors; do not apply another pass’s eligibility rules to it.

Which days should I use for the park, harbour, houses and lake?

Akita Station and Senshu Park on arrival day

Walk from the station to Senshu Park to start your trip. Explore the moat in daylight, then return towards the station for dinner. Stay around the moat for fewer slopes; decide whether to continue uphill to Ninomaru based on the walking you want to do.

Choose your Selion outbound and return buses together. Restaurant and shop hours differ from observation-deck hours; fit harbour or station lunch around your return bus. For more room before onward rail travel, compare the plan with two nights in Akita.

Samurai-house interiors and craft displays in Kakunodate

Explore Aoyagi’s gardens and exhibits and Kawarada’s house and garden. Add Kabazaiku Denshokan for crafts using wild cherry bark. The three-night plan puts it on departure day; the four-night stay gives it a separate day. Compare the latter for an early departure.

Use a day of your Kakunodate stay for Lake Tazawa. Take the loop bus with walking breaks at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine, returning to the station on the same bus. A lakeside or Nyuto Onsen stay needs separate transport and accommodation arrangements and is excluded from this day trip.

Kiritanpo hotpot or Inaniwa udon: what would you like to eat?

Kiritanpo is roughly mashed rice shaped around a skewer and grilled. In hotpot, it is cooked with ingredients such as mushrooms in a soy-based broth made with Hinai chicken. Inaniwa udon noodles are stretched by hand and known for their springy, smooth texture.

For hotpot at dinner, first check whether it is already part of your accommodation meal. Consider udon for lunch on days with dinner included. Eat near Akita Station on a park day or in Kakunodate on a house-visiting day for a convenient return to accommodation. Menus, prices and hours vary; check your chosen restaurant.

If you are unsure where to board a bus

Ask the driver where to board the Akita Station return bus when alighting at Selion. For help finding Port Tower’s entrance, contact the facility on 018-857-3381.

For the Lake Tazawa loop bus, show your timetable at Folake tourist information centre inside the station and ask where to board. Hours are 08:30–17:15; phone 0187-43-2111. If closed, contact Ugo Kotsu’s Tazawako office on 0187-43-1511.

Paying cash on the Lake Tazawa bus

Prepare coins or a JPY 1,000 note. Take a numbered ticket when boarding and hand it in with your fare when alighting. Before boarding, ask the driver what to do with the ticket during lake-loop sightseeing stops. With an ordinary ticket, choosing to alight partway generally ends that journey; do not treat it as a day pass for freely boarding later buses.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay for Senshu Park and the samurai district?

Compare the Akita Station area for Senshu Park, city meals or a bus to Selion. For Kakunodate’s samurai district, compare accommodation near its station or historic street. If staying in both areas, allow a separate day for the Shinkansen move.

Can I visit Lake Tazawa as a day trip from Kakunodate?

Yes. One plan keeps your Kakunodate accommodation and visits the lake for a day. Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako, then a lake loop bus with sightseeing breaks. Return to the station on the same bus, then take the Shinkansen back to Kakunodate. Not every bus connects with a train; choose return services together for your date. Staying by the lake or in Nyuto Onsen has different bases and return transport from this day trip.
