Which base should you choose in Akita?
Base yourself near Akita Station for the park and harbour, or stay several nights in Kakunodate for residences and Lake Tazawa on separate days. If staying in both, choose the Shinkansen for your hotel-change day. Routes begin at local stations; airport transfers and flights need separate arrangements.
Start with the attractions you want to see
Choose Senshu Park for an arrival-day walk, or Selion for sea and harbour views. For residence interiors and local crafts, choose Kakunodate; for lake views and the Tatsuko Statue, compare the Lake Tazawa circuit bus. Ishiguro’s last ordinary visiting day is 30 November 2026. For later travel, check Aoyagi and Kawarada’s opening instead.
Itineraries by trip length
Eight routes begin at local stations. First choose whether to stay in Akita or Kakunodate and whether to change hotels. Shorten visits for a late first-day arrival or early final-day departure. Airport travel is separate.
1 night, 2 days
Visit the park and harbour on separate days from Akita Station, or two residences on separate days in Kakunodate. Both routes keep one base without lake travel.
2 nights, 3 days
For the park and residences, spend one night each in Akita and Kakunodate. For residences and the lake, stay two nights in Kakunodate and use one day for Lake Tazawa.
3 nights, 4 days
To include city walks, choose one Akita night followed by two Kakunodate nights. Three Kakunodate nights allow residences, the lake and craft exhibitions on departure day, but omit the craft museum for a morning departure.
4 nights, 5 days
For harbour views, stay two nights each in Akita and Kakunodate, separating the harbour visit from the hotel move. Four Kakunodate nights give residences, crafts and the lake separate days, with no new visit on departure day.
Where to stay
Akita Station · 秋田駅
Choose this base for Senshu Park, city meals and buses to Selion. If travelling to the airport after Selion, check the return bus to Akita Station and airport bus separately.
Kakunodate Station · 角館駅
Arrive by train and walk to the samurai district. A hotel near the station makes onward travel easier; one near the district makes returning after a walk easier. Not every hotel offers station transfers.
Tazawako Station · 田沢湖駅
Change here for lake-bound buses. Station-area, lakeside and Nyuto Onsen hotels are in different locations. Before booking, decide whether to have dinner at the hotel and which bus will get you there before check-in.
Choosing transport and hotels
Lake Tazawa circuit bus: checks before setting out
Choose a Lake Tazawa circuit service with walking stops and arrange both JR journeys alongside it. Services marked ● in the operator’s timetable do not run on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays or designated holiday periods. Not every bus connects with Shinkansen trains. Large luggage such as suitcases is restricted. Take short walks at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine, then reboard the same bus. Check additional fares before changing to a later service. Plan lunch after returning to the station, rather than during a walking stop.

Looking for a hotel near the station?
Compare Hotel Metropolitan Akita for a station-connected property in Akita, or Hotel B4T beside Kakunodate Station. B4T uses self check-in and provides no breakfast. Check rates and conditions in each hotel’s official guidance.
Akita–Kakunodate e-ticket reference versus actual price
The regular-season Shinkansen e-ticket table lists adult ordinary-class reserved seats at JPY 2,870 each way between Akita and Kakunodate, or JPY 5,740 return. Adding JPY 1,000 for two residence admissions gives a JPY 6,740 reference total. Distinguish this from paper-ticket prices and actual sales for your date. Ekinet registration/booking and a linked transport IC card for each passenger are required. Prices vary by season and booking product. Hotels, meals, station access and travel before/after the trip are excluded.

Where can I use the JR pass for hotel moves and the lake visit?
The JR East Pass covers Akita Shinkansen sections between Akita and Kakunodate and between Kakunodate and Tazawako. Reserve seats first and check that outward and return dates fall within consecutive validity. Ugo Kotsu lake buses and Akita Chuo Kotsu Selion buses are excluded. Ordinary tickets are another option; compare all your other JR travel to judge whether the pass saves money. An original passport issued outside Japan is required. This pass is not restricted to Temporary Visitor status; do not apply another pass’s eligibility rules to it.

Which days should you use for the park, harbour, residences and lake?
Take a bus from Akita Station to the harbour observation tower and Shinkansen trains to Kakunodate and Tazawako. Give the park, harbour, residences and lake separate days according to where you stay and your return transport.
Arrival day: Akita Station and Senshu Park
Begin with a walk from the station to Senshu Park. Explore around the moat in daylight, then return towards the station for dinner. For fewer slopes, keep to the moat. Decide whether to climb to Ninomaru according to the walking you want to do.
Harbour views, then back to Akita city
Choose both Selion buses together for your harbour day. Restaurants and shops have different hours from the observation deck; fit harbour meals or station meals around the return bus. If an immediate departure-train connection feels rushed, compare the route with two nights in Akita.
Residence interiors and craft exhibitions in Kakunodate
Explore Aoyagi’s garden and exhibitions and Kawarada’s house and garden. Add Kabazaiku Denshokan if interested in crafts using wild cherry bark. The three-night route puts the craft museum on departure day; the four-night route gives it a separate day. Compare the latter for an early departure.

A Lake Tazawa day trip from Kakunodate
Use a day of your Kakunodate stay for Lake Tazawa. Take a circuit bus with walking stops at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine, returning to the station on the same bus. Lakeside or Nyuto Onsen stays require different transport and hotel arrangements and are excluded from this day trip.

Which route should you take from the station to each attraction?
These directions begin at stations. For a hotel start, change the map’s starting point to your booked address. Prioritise your travel date’s official JR/bus timetables and facility guidance over estimated map times.
Akita Station → Senshu Park
The pocket park is about five minutes’ walk from Akita Station; Ninomaru is about 15. Choose the moat or hilltop as your destination when finding the route. These estimates cover station-to-destination travel; add park walking, photographs and breaks.
Akita Station west exit → Selion
Take the Selion line from west-side terminal stop 4 to Selion. Enter Port Tower through the front entrance, visit the deck and return on an Akita Station-bound bus. The ride takes about 25 minutes; walking to the entrance and waiting are extra. Choose both buses from the appropriate weekday or weekend/public-holiday timetable.

Kakunodate Station → samurai district
Follow the station road to the T-junction by Kakunodate Post Office, then turn right into the samurai district. Aoyagi is at 角館町表町下丁3; Kawarada is at 角館町東勝楽丁9. Estimates to Aoyagi differ—about 15 minutes from the tourism association and 20 from city hall—so leave extra time for navigation.

Akita Station → Kakunodate Station
Take a Morioka-bound Akita Shinkansen and get off at Kakunodate. You pass Omagari without changing on this section. Choose a train stopping at Kakunodate and reserve a seat. For a residence visit after arrival, allow enough time before that day’s last admission.
Kakunodate Station → Tazawako Station → lake circuit
Take the Shinkansen to Tazawako Station and change to a lake circuit bus outside. See the Tatsuko Statue and lake at Katajiri, then take a short walk at Gozanoishi Shrine before returning on the same bus. Walking stops last 20 and ten minutes respectively. Choose your Kakunodate-bound train around the bus’s return time.

How much are admission and transport for your chosen sights?
Calculate only the items you choose for one adult. These facility and bus prices exclude JR, hotels, meals and airport transfers. Admission changes according to whether you visit both residences or add craft exhibitions.
| Facility or journey | Adult price | Other costs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Aoyagi and Kawarada residences | JPY 500 each; JPY 1,000 for both | Ordinary individual admission. Extra tours and experiences are separate. |
| Kabazaiku Denshokan | Individual admission JPY 500 | Check whether craft demonstrations run that day. |
| Selion deck and return buses from Akita Station | Free deck; buses JPY 550 each way, JPY 1,100 return | Meals, shops and JR fares for the alternative Tsuchizaki Station walk are extra. |
| Lake circuit bus from Tazawako Station | JPY 1,160 per circuit | Return on the same bus after the walking stops. Check JR return fares and additional fares for reboarding a different bus separately. |
| Senshu Park | The basic route excludes paid indoor facilities. | To enter Kubota Castle Osumiyagura, check that day’s opening and admission separately. |

Kiritanpo hotpot or Inaniwa udon: which meal should you choose?
Kiritanpo is coarsely mashed rice moulded around skewers and grilled. In hotpot, it joins mushrooms and other ingredients in a soy-based broth using Hinai chicken. Inaniwa udon uses hand-stretched noodles known for their springy, smooth texture.
For a hotpot dinner, first check whether dinner is already included at your hotel. On hotel-dinner days, consider udon for lunch. Eat near Akita Station on the park day or in Kakunodate on residence days for an easy hotel return. Menus, prices and hours differ by restaurant; check the one you plan to visit.

Transport, food and cameras
Use the JR pass guide for intercity trains and the Senshu Park moat camera before city walks.
JR East Pass guide
Compare the JR East Pass for a trip linking several cities by Shinkansen. Do not assume Ugo Kotsu’s lake circuit or hot-spring buses and the Selion line are covered by the same pass.
Original Senshu Park moat camera
Before a city walk, view the original Senshu Park moat camera for the moat and water’s edge. It does not show every hilltop park path or Osumiyagura’s interior. Original camera page checked: 2026-10-08.
If you are unsure where to board
When alighting at Selion, ask the driver where to catch the Akita Station-bound bus. For questions about Port Tower’s entrance, contact the facility on 018-857-3381.
At Tazawako Station, show your timetable to Folake tourist information staff and ask where to board the lake circuit bus. Hours are 08:30–17:15; phone 0187-43-2111. If the office is closed, contact Ugo Kotsu’s Tazawako office on 0187-43-1511.

Paying cash on Lake Tazawa buses
Prepare coins or JPY 1,000 notes. Take a numbered ticket at the boarding entrance and hand it in with the fare when alighting. Ask the driver before boarding how to handle the ticket at circuit-bus walking stops. With an ordinary ticket, getting off at an intermediate stop generally ends that journey; do not treat it as a day pass allowing unrestricted later buses.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay for Senshu Park and the samurai district?
Compare Akita Station hotels for Senshu Park, city meals and Selion buses. For Kakunodate’s samurai district, consider hotels near Kakunodate Station or the district. If staying in both destinations, set aside a day for the Shinkansen move.

Can I visit Lake Tazawa on a day trip from Kakunodate?
Yes. One itinerary lets you keep the same Kakunodate hotel and visit the lake for a day. Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, then a lake circuit bus with walking stops. Return to the station on the same bus and take the Shinkansen back to Kakunodate. Not all buses connect with trains, so choose both journeys together for your date. Lakeside or Nyuto Onsen stays use different bases and return transport from this day trip.
