Where should you base your Akita trip?
Base yourself near Akita Station for the park and port, or stay multiple nights in Kakunodate to visit the houses and Lake Tazawa on separate days. If splitting your nights between the two areas, plan the Shinkansen for your hotel-move day. These itineraries start at local stations; airport transportation and flights are separate.
Choose the sights you want to see first
Choose Senshu Park for an arrival-day walk or Selion for sea and port views. For house interiors and local crafts, choose Kakunodate; for lake views and the Tatsuko statue, compare the Lake Tazawa loop bus. Ishiguro's last regular viewing day is November 30, 2026. For later trips, check Aoyagi's and Kawarada's hours.
Itineraries by trip length
These eight itineraries start at local stations. First decide where to stay—Akita or Kakunodate—and whether to move hotels. Shorten sightseeing on days with late arrivals or early departures; arrange airport transportation separately.
2 days, 1 night
Spend a day each at Akita's park and port, or split Kakunodate's two houses across two days. Both options keep one base and exclude lake travel.
3 days, 2 nights
For the park and houses, spend one night each in Akita and Kakunodate. For the houses and lake, stay two nights in Kakunodate and use a day for Lake Tazawa.
4 days, 3 nights
For a city walk too, stay one night in Akita then two in Kakunodate. With three nights in Kakunodate, you can see the houses and lake, then add crafts on departure day; skip the museum for a morning departure.
5 days, 4 nights
For the port as well, spend two nights each in Akita and Kakunodate, separating the port visit from the hotel move. Four nights in Kakunodate gives the houses, crafts, and lake separate days, with no new sight on departure day.
Where to stay
Akita Station · 秋田駅
A practical base for Senshu Park, city meals, and the bus to Selion. If you plan to go to the airport after Selion, check the return bus to Akita Station and the airport bus separately.
Kakunodate Station · 角館駅
Arrive by train and walk to the samurai-house streets. A station-area hotel makes your next departure easier; a hotel near the historic streets shortens the walk back after sightseeing. Station pickup is not offered by every hotel.
Tazawako Station · 田沢湖駅
This is where you transfer to a lakeside bus. Hotels near the station, by the lake, and in Nyuto Onsen are in different locations. Before booking, decide whether you will eat dinner at your hotel and which bus gets you there by check-in.
Choosing transportation and hotels
Check the Lake Tazawa loop bus before you leave
Choose a Lake Tazawa loop bus with walking stops and plan your round-trip JR trains as well. Services marked ● in the operator's timetable do not run on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, or designated holiday periods; not every bus connects with a Shinkansen. Large suitcases and other oversized luggage are restricted. The itinerary uses short walks at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine, then reboards the same bus. Check the extra fare if you plan to switch to a later bus. Have lunch after returning to the station, rather than during a walking stop.

Looking for a hotel near the station?
Compare Hotel Metropolitan Akita for a hotel connected to Akita Station, or HOTEL B4T for a stay right beside Kakunodate Station. B4T uses self-service check-in and does not provide breakfast. Check each hotel's official information for room rates and conditions.
Akita–Kakunodate e-ticket estimate versus your payment
JR's regular-season Shinkansen e-ticket table lists an adult ordinary-car reserved seat between Akita and Kakunodate at ¥2,870 one way, or ¥5,740 round trip. Adding ¥1,000 for the two houses gives a reference total of ¥6,740. This differs from paper-ticket prices and the amount actually sold for your date. You need an Eki-net account and reservation, with a transit IC card linked for each traveler. Prices vary by season and booking product. Hotels, meals, station access, and transportation before and after the trip are excluded.

Hotel moves, lake visits, and JR pass coverage
The JR EAST PASS can cover Akita–Kakunodate and Kakunodate–Tazawako on the Akita Shinkansen. Reserve seats first and make sure both travel dates fall within the pass's consecutive validity period. Ugo Kotsu lake buses and Akita Chuo Kotsu Selion buses are excluded. Regular tickets also work; compare all your JR trips to decide whether the pass saves money. You need your original non-Japanese passport. The JR EAST PASS is not limited to Temporary Visitor status; do not apply another pass's eligibility rules to it.

Which days should you use for the park, port, houses, and lake?
Take a bus from Akita Station to the port observation tower and use the Shinkansen for Kakunodate and Tazawako. Give the park, port, houses, and lake separate days based on where you stay and your return transportation.
Akita Station and Senshu Park on arrival day
Start with a walk from the station to Senshu Park on arrival day. Walk along the moat in daylight, then return toward the station for dinner. Stay by the moat to reduce slopes, or continue to uphill Ninomaru according to how much you want to walk.
Port views, then back to Akita city
Plan your outbound and return Selion buses together. Restaurants and shops have different hours from the observation room, so use your return bus to decide whether to eat at the port or after returning to the station. If connecting directly to a departure train feels too tight, compare the two-night Akita option.

House interiors and craft exhibits in Kakunodate
Explore Aoyagi's garden and exhibits and Kawarada's house and garden. Add Kabazaiku Densyokan if you are curious about crafts made with wild cherry bark. The three-night trip puts the museum on departure day; the four-night Kakunodate stay gives it a separate day, which is useful if your departure is early.

A Lake Tazawa day trip from Kakunodate
Use a day of your Kakunodate stay for Lake Tazawa. Take a loop bus with walking stops at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine, then return to the station on the same bus. Staying by the lake or in Nyuto Onsen requires separate hotel and transport arrangements and is excluded from this day trip.

How do you get from the stations to the sights?
These directions begin at stations. For a hotel departure, change the map's starting point to your booked address. Check the official JR and bus timetables and facility hours for your date before relying on a map's estimated arrival time.
Akita Station → Senshu Park
Pocket Park is about a five-minute walk from Akita Station, and the Ninomaru site about 15 minutes. Choose a moat-side or uphill destination before finding your route. These estimates cover the walk from the station to that point; allow additional time for park walks, photos, and breaks.
Akita Station west exit → Selion
At stop 4 in Akita Station's west-side bus terminal, take the Selion route and get off at Selion. Enter through the Port Tower's front entrance, visit the observation room, then take the bus back to Akita Station. The bus takes about 25 minutes; waiting and walking to the entrance take extra time. Use the correct weekday or Saturday/Sunday/public-holiday timetable to choose both services.

Kakunodate Station → samurai-house streets
Follow the station road to the T-junction where you can see Kakunodate Post Office, then turn right into the samurai-house streets. Aoyagi is at 角館町表町下丁3 and Kawarada at 角館町東勝楽丁9. Aoyagi walking estimates differ: about 15 minutes from the tourism association and about 20 from city hall. Allow navigation time.

Akita Station → Kakunodate Station
Take the Akita Shinkansen toward Morioka and get off at Kakunodate. You pass through Omagari without changing trains on this segment. Choose a train that stops at Kakunodate and reserve a seat. If visiting a house after arrival, leave enough time before its last admission.
Kakunodate Station → Tazawako Station → lake loop
Take the Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, then transfer to a lake-loop bus in front of the station. See the Tatsuko statue and lake at Katajiri, take a short walk at Gozanoishi Shrine, then return to the station on the same bus. The stops last 20 and 10 minutes, respectively. Choose the train back to Kakunodate around the bus's return time.

What will your chosen sights and buses cost?
Calculate only the items you choose, for one adult. The facility and bus prices below exclude JR trains, hotels, meals, and airport transportation. Admission totals vary depending on whether you see both houses and add the craft exhibits.
| Facility or journey | Adult price | What else to budget for |
|---|---|---|
| Aoyagi and Kawarada houses | ¥500 each; ¥1,000 for both | Standard individual admission. Additional tours and activities cost extra. |
| Kabazaiku Densyokan | ¥500 individual admission | Check whether a craft demonstration is running that day. |
| Selion observation room and round-trip Akita Station buses | Observation room free; buses ¥550 each way, ¥1,100 total | Meals, shopping, and JR fares for the Tsuchizaki Station walking alternative cost extra. |
| Lake Tazawa loop bus from Tazawako Station | ¥1,160 per loop trip | Return on the same bus after walking stops. Round-trip JR fares and additional fares for boarding another bus need separate checks. |
| Senshu Park | The basic itinerary excludes paid indoor visits. | For Kubota Castle's Osumiyagura interior, check that day's operation and admission separately. |

Kiritanpo hot pot or Inaniwa udon: which meal should you choose?
Kiritanpo is coarsely mashed rice shaped around a skewer and grilled. In hot pots, it is added with mushrooms and other ingredients to a soy-sauce-based broth made with Hinai chicken. Inaniwa udon is hand-stretched and known for its smooth, springy texture.
If you want hot pot for dinner, first check whether it is already included in your hotel meal. On a night with hotel dinner, consider udon for lunch. Eat near Akita Station on a park day or in Kakunodate on a house-visiting day for an easier return to your hotel. Menus, prices, and hours vary by restaurant; check your chosen place.

Transportation, food, and cameras
Use the JR pass guide for intercity trains and the Senshu Park moat camera before a city walk.

For a trip connecting several cities by Shinkansen, compare JR EAST PASS options. Do not assume the same pass covers Ugo Kotsu's lake-loop and hot-spring buses or the Selion bus.

If you are unsure where to board the bus
When you get off at Selion, ask the driver where to board the return bus to Akita Station. If you are unsure about the Port Tower entrance, ask the facility (018-857-3381).
At Tazawako Station, show your timetable to the Folake tourist information desk and ask where to board the lake-loop bus. Desk hours are 8:30 a.m.–5:15 p.m.; phone: 0187-43-2111. If it is closed, contact Ugo Kotsu's Tazawako office (0187-43-1511).

Paying cash on the Lake Tazawa bus
Prepare coins or ¥1,000 bills. Take a numbered ticket when boarding and hand it in with your fare when you get off. Ask the driver before boarding how the ticket is handled during loop-bus walking stops. With a regular ticket, getting off partway generally ends that segment of carriage; do not treat it as a day pass that lets you freely board the next bus.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay for Senshu Park and the samurai-house streets?
Compare hotels near Akita Station for Senshu Park, city meals, or the Selion bus. For Kakunodate's samurai-house streets, look near Kakunodate Station or closer to the historic streets. If staying in both areas, set aside a day for the Shinkansen move.

Can I visit Lake Tazawa as a day trip from Kakunodate?
There are itineraries that keep the same Kakunodate hotel and visit Lake Tazawa for a day. Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako Station, then a lake-loop bus with walking stops. Return to the station on the same bus and take the Shinkansen back to Kakunodate. Not every bus connects with a train, so choose the round-trip services together for your date. A stay by the lake or in Nyuto Onsen has a different base and return transportation from this day trip.
