Where should you stay and what should you see in Saitama?
Kawagoe has temples and old streets, while Omiya has the Railway Museum and bonsai and cartoon exhibits. Stay in Kawagoe first, then continue to Omiya. For Chichibu's shrine and festival exhibits plus Nagatoro's riverside, see the five-day trips with a Kumagaya transfer and two nights in Chichibu.
Old streets, exhibits or riverside views?
In Kawagoe, visit Kitain, old streets, the castle and city museum. Compare Omiya for rail, bonsai and cartoons, or Chichibu and Nagatoro for shrine and festival exhibits and river views. Check closures and directions from stations for each attraction.
Daily itineraries
Stay in Kawagoe first, then choose Omiya's exhibits. Longer stays give rail and bonsai and cartoons a day each, or continue to Chichibu and Nagatoro. Transport and admission costs cover departure from and return to Shinjuku; airport travel costs extra.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Kawagoe and visit Omiya the next day. Choose time at the Railway Museum or a walk to bonsai and cartoon exhibits and the park.
3 days / 2 nights
One night each in Kawagoe and Omiya separates temple and old-street visits from the castle and museum. On the final day, see rail or bonsai and cartoon exhibits before returning to Shinjuku.
4 days / 3 nights
Option A includes one night in Kawagoe and two in Omiya, with separate days for the Railway Museum and the bonsai and cartoon museums. B stays one night each in Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu, visiting the shrine and festival exhibits the day after bonsai and cartoons. B returns after Chichibu without visiting Nagatoro.
5 days / 4 nights
Stay two nights in Chichibu, visiting Nagatoro's riverside and Hodosan the day after the shrine and festival exhibits. Choose A for the Railway Museum or B for the bonsai and cartoon museums.
Accommodation bases and luggage storage
Kawagoe · 川越
Spend the first night in Kawagoe for temples and old streets into the evening. An ordinary JR paper ticket from Shinjuku costs JPY 810, followed by JPY 350 to Omiya the next day. JR Kawagoe, Hon-Kawagoe and Kawagoeshi are separate stations, so choose accommodation for the railway you will use.

Omiya · 大宮
Choose two Omiya nights to give the Railway Museum and bonsai and cartoon museums a day each. Moving here after Kawagoe avoids retracing the same journey. An ordinary JR paper ticket from Omiya to Shinjuku costs JPY 530 one way. For Chichibu, take JR to Kumagaya and change to Chichibu Railway.

Compare accommodation near the old streets and Chichibu Station
Consider Hatago COEDOYA for a stay near the old streets. It is about 18 minutes on foot from JR Kawagoe Station, with shared showers and toilets. Near Chichibu Station, compare Hotel Route-Inn Grand Chichibu, about six minutes away. These hotels are location examples; check rates and available rooms for your dates.

Choose your interests, then match facility opening dates
The Railway Museum closes on Tuesdays, the bonsai museum normally closes on Thursdays, and the cartoon museum closes on Mondays and weekdays following public holidays, among other dates. Kawagoe Castle and city museum have closures including Mondays and the fourth Friday. Choose a day when all planned facilities are open; check official calendars for temporary closures and public holiday exceptions. Choose outbound and return JR, Chichibu Railway and New Shuttle services using your date's timetables. Special exhibitions run for set periods, so check what is on when you visit.

Should I buy a JR TOKYO Wide Pass just for these itineraries?
JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The pass costs JPY 16,000 for adults aged 12 and older and is valid for three consecutive days from your selected start date. Official covered operators include JR East and the New Shuttle section between Omiya and Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan. Chichibu Railway is excluded, so buy separate tickets between Kumagaya and Chichibu or Nagatoro. Ropeway fares, admission, accommodation and meals cost extra. Even the highest transport-and-admission total among these eight itineraries is JPY 9,740, so buying a pass just for this trip is not presented as a saving. If you already have a pass or combine other travel, check valid dates and exact covered routes on the map. One three-day pass does not cover an entire four- or five-day trip. Users must be foreign nationals holding a valid passport issued outside Japan; this product is an exception to the Temporary Visitor visa requirement. Check original-passport and personal-use conditions in the official purchase guide.

Why divide the trip between Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu?
Visit old streets in Kawagoe and rail, bonsai and cartoon exhibits in Omiya. Chichibu and Nagatoro require a change to Chichibu Railway at Kumagaya, so choose whether to travel after Omiya's exhibits and how long to stay locally.
Kawagoe: Kitain and old streets
Visit Kitain's paid areas first, then Kurazukuri Street and Toki no Kane. Consider a walk through Kashiya Yokocho for small sweet shops. To include the castle and city museum, compare a three-day trip that separates visits after matching both facilities' closure days.

Omiya: rail exhibits, bonsai and cartoons
Take the New Shuttle from Omiya to the Railway Museum, or walk through the park and bonsai village to the bonsai and cartoon museums. The officially recommended walk to the bonsai museum takes about 45 minutes; allow extra time for visits and rests. Choose four-day A with two Omiya nights to see both types of exhibit.

Chichibu: shrine and festival exhibits
Walk about three minutes from Chichibu Railway's Chichibu Station to the shrine. See buildings and carvings, then floats and recreated footage at the nearby Festival Hall. This differs from attending the festival itself. Compare two Chichibu nights if adding the riverside the next day.

Nagatoro: riverside and Hodosan
Iwadatami is about five minutes on foot from Nagatoro Station; Hodosan Ropeway's lower station is about 20 minutes away. Rain and high water may restrict riverside rock access, while weather and suspensions affect the ropeway. On the final day, return to Shinjuku via Kumagaya rather than retracing the route to Chichibu.

These totals use ordinary paper fares and basic admission for one adult travelling from and back to Shinjuku. Accommodation, meals, airports, extra activities and luggage storage are excluded. Choosing Railway Museum advance admission reduces the relevant A itinerary total by JPY 100.
