Where should you stay and what should you see in Saitama?
Kawagoe brings together temples and old streets; Omiya has the Railway Museum and bonsai and manga displays. Stay in Kawagoe on the first night, then continue to Omiya. For Chichibu’s shrine and festival displays plus Nagatoro’s riverside, consider the four-night route, changing at Kumagaya and spending two nights in Chichibu.
Old streets, exhibitions or riverside scenery?
In Kawagoe, visit Kitain, the old streets, the castle and the city museum. Choose Omiya for railway, bonsai and manga displays. Compare Chichibu and Nagatoro for shrine and festival exhibits plus riverside scenery. Each attraction guide includes closures and access from the station.
Day-by-day itineraries
Stay in Kawagoe on the first night, then choose your Omiya exhibitions. With more time, give railway displays and bonsai and manga separate days, or continue to Chichibu and Nagatoro. Transport and admission costs below cover departure from and return to Shinjuku; airport travel is separate.
1 night, 2 days
Spend one night in Kawagoe and visit Omiya the next day. Choose time at the Railway Museum or a walk taking in the bonsai museum, Manga Hall and park.
2 nights, 3 days
Spend one night each in Kawagoe and Omiya, splitting temples and old streets from the castle and museum. On the final day, choose railway displays or bonsai and manga before returning to Shinjuku.
3 nights, 4 days
In A, spend one night in Kawagoe and two in Omiya, giving railway displays and bonsai and manga a day each. In B, spend one night each in Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu, with the shrine and festival displays the day after bonsai and manga. Return after Chichibu sightseeing in B, without visiting Nagatoro.
4 nights, 5 days
Spend two nights in Chichibu, visiting Nagatoro’s riverside and Hodosan the day after the shrine and festival displays. Choose railway displays in Omiya for A, or bonsai and manga for B.

Omiya · 大宮
Choose two Omiya nights to give the Railway Museum and bonsai and manga separate days. Move here after Kawagoe to avoid retracing the same section. JR paper fare to Shinjuku is JPY 530 one way; for Chichibu, take JR to Kumagaya and change to Chichibu Railway.

Compare hotels near the old streets and Chichibu Station
For a stay near the old streets, consider Hatago COEDOYA. It is about 18 minutes on foot from JR Kawagoe Station, with shared showers and toilets. Near Chichibu Station, Hotel Route-Inn Grand Chichibu is about six minutes away. These two hotels are examples for comparing locations. Check room availability and prices for your travel dates.

Choose your interests, then match the facilities’ opening calendars
The Railway Museum closes on Tuesdays, the bonsai museum usually on Thursdays, and Manga Hall on Mondays and the weekday after a public holiday, among other dates. Kawagoe Castle and the city museum have closures including Mondays and the fourth Friday. Choose a day when all your intended stops open, and check official calendars for temporary closures and holiday exceptions. Use travel-date timetables for JR, Chichibu Railway and the New Shuttle to plan outward and return trains. Special exhibitions run for limited periods, so check what is showing on your visit date.

Should you buy a new JR TOKYO Wide Pass just for this itinerary?
JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The adult pass, for ages 12 and above, costs JPY 16,000 and is valid for three consecutive days from your chosen start date. Officially covered operators include JR East and the New Shuttle between Omiya and Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan. Chichibu Railway is excluded: buy separate tickets between Kumagaya, Chichibu and Nagatoro. Ropeway fares, attraction admission, hotels and meals also cost extra. The eight routes below cost no more than JPY 9,740 for transport and sightseeing combined, so buying this pass solely for these routes is not a saving. If you already have a pass or combine this with another trip, match its valid dates and exact covered routes on the map. One three-day pass does not cover an entire four- or five-day trip. Users must be foreign nationals holding a valid passport issued outside Japan; this pass is an exception to the Temporary Visitor visa requirement. Check the original-passport and personal-use conditions in the official purchase guide.

Why split Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu?
The old streets are in Kawagoe; railway, bonsai and manga displays are in Omiya. Chichibu and Nagatoro require a change to Chichibu Railway at Kumagaya. Decide whether to travel after your Omiya exhibitions and how long to stay locally.
Kawagoe: Kitain and the old streets
Start with Kitain’s paid visitor areas, then continue to Kurazukuri Street and Toki no Kane. For small sweets shops, consider a walk through Kashiya Yokocho. To add the castle and city museum, compare the three-day routes, which split them onto another day and require matching both facilities’ opening calendars.

Omiya: railway displays, bonsai and manga
Take the New Shuttle from Omiya to the Railway Museum. The route to the bonsai museum and Manga Hall goes on foot through the park and bonsai village. The official recommended walk to the bonsai museum takes about 45 minutes; allow extra time for visits and rests. To see both types of exhibitions, choose four days A, with two nights in Omiya.

Chichibu: shrine and festival displays
Walk about three minutes from Chichibu Railway’s Chichibu Station to the shrine. View its buildings and carvings, then see festival floats and re-creation films at nearby Matsuri Kaikan. This is separate from attending the actual festival. For the riverside the following day, compare the routes with two nights in Chichibu.

Nagatoro: riverside scenery and Hodosan
Iwadatami is about five minutes on foot from Nagatoro Station; Hodosan Ropeway’s lower station is about 20 minutes away. Rain and high water can restrict access to the riverside rocks, while ropeway operation depends on weather and suspensions. On the final day, return to Shinjuku via Kumagaya without going back to Chichibu.

Choose old-town sweets and Chichibu food
Kawagoe: sweet potato sweets
Kawagoe has grown sweet potatoes and shipped them to Edo since the Edo period. While walking, compare baked or filled sweets such as sweet potato senbei and dorayaki with sweet potato filling. Shops in the sweets alley and old streets differ in selection, packaging and price. Choose according to whether you want something to eat now or a gift.

Chichibu: battered potatoes with miso sauce
Miso potato (みそポテト) consists of boiled potatoes coated in batter, fried and served with a sweet and savoury miso sauce. This Chichibu local food developed as a light meal during farm work and is also eaten as a snack or side dish. Menus and portions vary by shop, so decide whether to order it with a meal or as a snack.

Compare route transport and admission costs with the pass price
These totals cover ordinary paper train tickets and basic admission for one adult departing from and returning to Shinjuku. Hotels, meals, airport travel, extra activities and luggage storage are excluded. An advance Railway Museum ticket reduces the relevant A-route total by JPY 100.
