Shimojishima Airport to Hirara and Miyakojima

Shimojishima Airport (SHI) is a different airport than Miyako Airport (MMY). First check the airport code on your flight ticket and the bus, pickup, and rental car pickup location.

For Hirara hotels, compare stops near the public market and port. For southern resorts, check the actual hotel stop: the bus serves Tokyu Hotel but does not serve every resort. Where there is no suitable bus, confirm a taxi, hotel pickup or rental car.

Shimojishima Airport SHI and Miyako Airport MMY are different

Shimojishima Airport · みやこ下地島空港 (SHI) is on Shimojishima. To reach Hirara · 平良, travel via Irabu Island · 伊良部島 and Irabu Bridge · 伊良部大橋 to Miyako Island · 宮古島.

Miyako Airport · 宮古空港(MMY) is another airport within Miyakojima. Make sure the SHI·MMY code on your flight ticket and the pick-up/rental car pickup location are the same. There are no railways or monorails in the area, so you'll have to travel by bus or car.

Fares and journey times to reach Hirara and the resorts

Below is the time after getting into the vehicle. Please make separate arrangements for immigration, baggage retrieval, waiting for boarding, and final transportation to your accommodation. Even for the same route to Hirara, the time may vary depending on the operator and the order of stops, and may take longer due to congestion or road restrictions.

Where do I catch the Shimojishima Airport bus?

  1. After completing immigration inspection and baggage pickup, go to the arrivals hall.
  2. When taking Chuo Kotsu, purchase a ticket at the reception desk near the international arrivals exit and then go to the route bus stop outside. The operator announced that as of October 24, 2026, the airport office will be unmanned and tickets will be sold upon boarding thereafter. If you arrive on transition day, first ask the staff or driver where to buy tickets.
  3. Kyoei goes directly to the route bus stop outside the terminal. The official layout shows pick-up points outside the check-in area. Check ‘路線バス / BUS STOP’ and the destination of the bus.
  4. Show the driver your stop name. Chuo Kotsu lists 平良港（マティダ市民劇場）, Hirara Port (Matida Civic Theater); Kyoei lists マティダ市民劇場前, Matida Civic Theater. For the public market, look for 公設市場前.

Chuo Kotsu payment/reservation

This is an airport liner that can be used without reservation. The operator advises payment by cash, credit card, or barcode. Please ask the operator before use about whether to use a transport IC card and about loading conditions for large luggage or strollers.

Pay with cash or credit card when getting off. Please ask the operator separately whether or not to use a transport IC card. This is a resort line that passes through designated stops, so please check if a separate fee is required when transferring to another regular route. Where can I get off in downtown Hirara and around Hirara Port?

Accommodations around the public market and Nishizato Street

Take the airport bus over Irabu Bridge and get off at Miyakojima Public Market · 公設市場前. For a hotel near Nishizato Street · 西里通り, compare the stop with your hotel’s address before walking.

If you have a large suitcase, it is better to check sidewalks and entrances, even if they are only a short distance away.

Around Hirara Port and Matida Civic Theater

Arrival hall → Airport bus stop → Irabu Bridge → Hirara Port · Matida Civic Theater · マティダ市民劇場 Nearby stop → Go to accommodation. The port is large, so getting off at a stop doesn't mean you reach all the docks.

If you plan to take a boat, check the boarding terminal name and departure time separately.

If your accommodation is a Hilton or a southern resort,

Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · ヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート and Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · キャノピーbyヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート are served after crossing Irabu Bridge, before entering the city. Check each operator’s stop and the remaining walk to the entrance.

Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel & Resorts · 宮古島東急ホテル＆リゾーツ is in the southwest. Take the bus over Irabu Bridge, through Hirara and via Miyako Airport to the Tokyu Hotel stop, then walk to the hotel.

Do not confuse heading to the city with heading to Tokyu Hotel.

Shigira, Shigira, シギラ inn and other southern hotels are not the same as the last stop of this bus. Ask your hotel if they offer SHI pickup and if it requires advance reservation and cost. If it is a MMY-only shuttle, it cannot be used to arrive at SHI. Tokyu Hotel informs you that SHI does not provide its own shuttle service, so please distinguish between the hotel's MMY free shuttle and the airport route bus. Tokyu Hotel informs that SHI does not provide shuttle service.

Shimojishima Airport bus last bus and plane delayed

This is the timetable from the airport to the city center and hotel. It's different from returning from the city to the airport.

Until October 24, 2026

Chuo Kotsu to Hirara/Miyako Airport has a 16:50 departure every day, and a 18:00 departure is also displayed on Thursdays and Sundays. Don't expect there to be buses at 18:00 on other days of the week.

The last airport departure for Kyoei Tokyu Hotel is at 16:50. The timetable during this period clearly states that it does not correspond to flights arriving at Jin Air, so if you are coming from Korea, check the Chuo Kotsu timetable first.

From October 25, 2026

From 25 October, Chuo Kotsu’s winter timetable lists 16:55 as the last airport departure. Kyoei adds a 17:00 departure and information on connections with Korean arrivals. Check your flight number, travel date and operating day against the new timetable.

Kyoei informs you that if the corresponding flight is delayed, the bus departure will also be delayed, but waiting restrictions may be displayed for each flight. If a flight is canceled, corresponding buses may also be suspended. Chuo Kotsu's waiting policy for all delayed flights has not been confirmed, so if your landing is delayed, ask the operator which bus you can take.

If the bus is over or the scheduled pickup time has passed, please notify the company of your flight number and changed arrival time. Reservation maintenance, waiting for a driver, and additional costs must be confirmed according to the reservation conditions. Please also notify your accommodation that you will arrive late.

For taxi/reservation pickup, check dispatch and total amount first.

Use the official airport taxi stand and travel over Irabu Bridge to your hotel. The airport states that taxis meet flights, but recommends considering a reservation if available vehicles have already left. For a late arrival or several large bags, ask the operator about availability in advance.

The airport estimates about 25 minutes and 4,000 yen to the city, rather than a fixed fare. Give your hotel address and ask whether the quote uses a meter or reserved flat rate, including surcharges, booking and pickup charges. Confirm night-rate conditions if arriving late.

Shimojishima Airport rental car, check pickup location and deadline

First, check whether the receiving airport on the reservation screen is SHI. Travel times are different for companies that receive services at the terminal and those that go to the sales office by shuttle. After the handover process is completed, you will be transferred to your accommodation via Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge.

This is directions to the Orix counter in the airport. Official business hours are 09:00 to 19:00 every day. There may be changes depending on holidays and periods. The name is similar to the Miyako Airport branch, so check the branch name.

Shimoji Rent-a-Car: Office Shuttle

This office is about 5 minutes away by car from SHI and offers free round-trip transportation. Business hours are 08:30~19:00. To change or cancel a reservation, you must contact the branch. Please check the shuttle meeting point and airport departure time after return when making a reservation.

A branch’s closing time is not necessarily its final collection time. Confirm the collection deadline, whether a delayed booking is held, the return point and the time needed to reach the airport afterwards. Contact the branch if delayed; if collection is impossible, arrange another way to reach your hotel.

When there is news of typhoons or strong winds

Check Japan Meteorological Agency warnings, airport and airline flight notices, and bus service notices separately. Strong wind alone does not establish that your flight is cancelled or Irabu Bridge is closed. Check the road authority’s actual restriction notice before changing your route.

Shimojishima Airport transfers, Frequently asked questions

Are Shimojishima Airport and Miyako Airport the same place?

No. Shimojishima Airport is SHI, and Miyako Airport is MMY. When going from SHI to Hirara, you pass by Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge. Make sure your bus, pickup, or rental car reservation has the same airport code as your ticket.

Can I go to downtown Hirara by bus?

Both Chuo Kotsu’s Airport Liner and Kyoei’s Resort Line serve Hirara, at 600 yen per adult for this section. For market-area hotels, compare the public-market stop. For the port, compare Chuo’s Hirara Port (Matida Civic Theatre) stop with Kyoei’s Matida Civic Theatre stop. Add the final walk to your hotel.

What transportation should I compare if my accommodation is in a southern resort area?

Kyoei’s Resort Line serves Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel, about 56 minutes and 800 yen from the airport. It does not serve every southern resort, including Shigira. Compare a hotel-confirmed SHI pickup with a taxi or rental car for your address.

Where should I board and get off the airport bus?

Use the route-bus stop outside the terminal. Chuo’s current ticket counter is near international arrivals, but its notice says the airport office becomes unstaffed on 24 October 2026 and tickets will then be sold on board. Confirm the arrangements on the transition date. For Kyoei, go to the stop and pay when getting off. Match the drop-off point to your hotel’s address.

If my flight is delayed, what happens to my bus or scheduled pickup?

Kyoei informs that if the flight indicated in the timetable as a corresponding flight is late, the bus departing from the airport will also be delayed, but there may be restrictions for each flight. This does not mean waiting for all arriving flights. For Chuo Kotsu and reservation pickups, notify the operator of your flight number and changed arrival time to check whether there will be a wait and additional charges.

What should I do if I arrive late and it is past the rental car pick-up time?

Contact your rental branch to ask whether pickup is still possible that day or the booking can be held until the next day. Collection after closing is not guaranteed. If pickup is unavailable, ask an official taxi company about dispatch and tell your hotel about the delay.

What should I check when taking a taxi from the airport to the hotel?

Use the official taxi rank or an airport-listed company. Give your hotel address, passenger count and luggage details. The airport’s city estimate is about 25 minutes and 4,000 yen, rather than a fixed fare. Confirm meter rates, surcharges, reservation or pickup fees, payment methods and vehicle availability.
