Fukuoka travel guide: where to stay and what to see
Stay near Hakata Station if you plan to use the airport or take JR trains to other cities. Tenjin suits a trip centred on dining and shopping. Once you have chosen a base, pick the sights and itinerary that fit your stay.
Choose your sights first
Compare admission and hours for the places that interest you: Hakata Old Town, Ohori Park and the Science Museum, Momochi Beach and Fukuoka Tower, Marine World or Dazaifu.
Itineraries for your length of stay
Your day depends on whether you prefer city food and walks, indoor attractions, the coast or a trip outside the city. Open an itinerary for daily travel steps. All assume a base near Hakata Station and use of Fukuoka Airport's international terminal.
2 days / 1 night
There is little sightseeing time between arrival on day 1 and departure on day 2. To explore on the second day, you need a late-afternoon or later flight.
3 days / 2 nights
Focus day 2 on a city walk, the aquarium or the coast. These plans keep departure day close to the airport.
4 days / 3 nights
After exploring the city, spend a day at your choice of Momochi, Marine World or Dazaifu.
5 days / 4 nights
Visit Ohori Park and the Science Museum on one day, then choose two of Marine World, Dazaifu and Momochi for the other two sightseeing days.
Choose where to stay
Near Hakata Station: convenient for airport and JR journeys
Hakata is two subway stops from the airport station and the starting point for JR journeys to Uminonakamichi. The walk from the subway gates or JR platforms to your hotel depends on its location, even if it is described as being near Hakata Station. Check the hotel address and the exit you will use before booking.
Tenjin: a base for dining and shopping
Consider Tenjin if restaurants and shops are a large part of your trip. Tenjin Station on the Airport Line and Tenjin-minami Station on the Nanakuma Line are separate stations with different platforms. Check which is closer to your hotel. Allow extra time in the morning if you need a JR train from Hakata.
Ohori and Ropponmatsu: parks and museums
Consider this area if walks and exhibitions are your priorities. For airport journeys or JR departures from Hakata, allow for the trip from your hotel to the station and any transfers. Staying near the park can mean a longer journey to the airport.
Areas to explore together in Fukuoka
From a Hakata or Tenjin base, consider the five city areas below and Dazaifu outside the city. Uminonakamichi and Dazaifu lie in different directions; visiting them on separate days leaves more time at each.
Hakata Station and old town
A meal near Hakata Station followed by Kushida Shrine fits sightseeing into a short stay. Take the Nanakuma Line from Hakata to Kushida Shrine Station and walk to the shrine. If you arrive late or have little time before your flight, keep to a meal near the station.
Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata
If you want a yatai after shopping in Tenjin, use the official map to check which stalls open that evening. Nakasu and Tenjin are separate areas. Check the nearest station and last train for your return to the hotel.
Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu
Ohori Park's lakeside path is about 2km long. You can walk part of it and rest on a bench rather than complete the circuit. For indoor exhibitions, continue to Fukuoka City Science Museum in Ropponmatsu, near Nanakuma Line Ropponmatsu Station exit 3.
Fukuoka City tourism authority: Ohori ParkScience Museum access
Momochi and Fukuoka Tower
Allow around half a day for a Momochi Beach walk and sea views from the tower. The city tourism guide's approximate 15-minute Tenjin–Momochi bus time excludes waiting and the walk from the stop. Adult tower deck admission is 1,000 yen; follow official last-admission information for your date.
Uminonakamichi and Marine World
For the aquarium, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii, then transfer to the JR Kashii Line for Uminonakamichi. Marine World's official map gives train rides of about 11 and 20 minutes and a roughly 5-minute walk from the station. Add time for the Kashii transfer and train waits.
Outside Fukuoka City: Dazaifu
Visit Dazaifu for shrine grounds with large trees and shops along the approach. It is outside Fukuoka City: travel from Hakata to Tenjin, then take Nishitetsu to Dazaifu Station. The 4-day and 5-day itineraries give it a separate day to allow for the return trip and shrine visit. Search train times and fares for your date.

Transport and places to eat
Plan the airport journey to your hotel, city transport, the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and meals in Hakata or Tenjin in the order you need them.

Use the airport section of the existing Fukuoka guide for the international-terminal shuttle and subway routes to Hakata and Tenjin.
Getting around by bus and train
Compare transport and transfers for Hakata Station, Tenjin and other cities. Recheck fares and departures for your travel date.
With Fukuoka Prefecture selected on the transport page, choose your departure station, arrival station and date. Check timetables and fares separately for subway and JR sections.
From Fukuoka to other Kyushu cities
If you plan several JR journeys from Hakata to cities such as Kumamoto and Nagasaki, compare Northern Kyushu Rail Pass coverage and prices. It does not cover Fukuoka's subway or airport shuttle buses.
Consider harbour sights in Nagasaki, a Lake Kinrin walk in Yufuin or hot-spring scenery at Beppu's Hells. Choose your return train to Hakata first. If local travel and sightseeing leave too little time, compare an extra night's stay. The attraction guides below lead to each city's detailed access information and daily itineraries.
Check covered lines and exclusions before adding Kokura or other northern Kyushu cities. The itinerary costs below do not include a rail-pass purchase.
Use this for harbour sights such as Dejima and Glover Garden. Plan your return JR train to Hakata alongside local travel in Nagasaki. If that leaves too little sightseeing time, consider a night in Nagasaki. City transport, admission and accommodation cost extra.
Allow time after arriving at Yufuin Station to walk through the hot-spring town and around Lake Kinrin. For a day trip, check your return train to Hakata first. Compare an overnight stay if you want an evening and morning in Yufuin. Accommodation, meals and bathing cost extra.
Choose this for views of the Hells' hot springs. As well as trains between Hakata and Beppu, you need a bus from Beppu Station. Visiting all seven involves travel between two areas. If your return train leaves too little time, visit fewer sites or stay a night in Beppu. Admission, local buses and accommodation cost extra.
Eat in the area you are visiting
Decide whether to eat near Hakata Station or spend the evening in Tenjin. Each area has its own food and restaurant guide.
For dinner in Hakata, use the food guide for the area around the station.
Explore meal options for an evening in Tenjin after returning from Dazaifu.
What food is Fukuoka known for?
For meals in Hakata or Tenjin, choose what you want to eat, then look for a restaurant in that day's area. Menus and prices vary by restaurant.
Ramen and udon
Tonkotsu ramen combines thin noodles with a rich pork-bone broth. If ramen does not appeal, consider udon. Both Hakata and Tenjin have restaurants; compare menus and opening hours in the area you are visiting.
Motsunabe and mizutaki
Motsunabe is a hot pot with beef offal, cabbage and garlic chives. Mizutaki cooks chicken and vegetables in chicken broth. If the smell of offal is unfamiliar, consider chicken-based mizutaki first. Broth and minimum group-order conditions differ between restaurants, so read the menu before booking.
Yatai food stalls
You can find evening yatai in areas such as Tenjin and Nakasu, but not every stall opens on the same days. The official guide says most open between 18:30 and 19:00; some close in bad weather. Seating is compact, so leave large suitcases at your hotel. Many take cash only: check prices and payment methods before ordering.

Planning your time in Fukuoka
For 2 days and 1 night
Choose one route: Hakata and Tenjin meals, Ohori Park and the Science Museum, or Momochi and the tower. For a morning return flight, skip day 2 sightseeing and focus on getting from Hakata to the international terminal.
Day-by-day plans for 4 or 5 days
There are three options each for 4-day and 5-day stays. After city walks, give separate days to your choice of Momochi, Marine World or Dazaifu. Adjust the days to your flights and attraction closures.
Season and travel companions
In rain, replace outdoor walks with an indoor attraction that is open; check closures first. With children, you can visit the aquarium and Science Museum on separate days. If travelling with parents, consider walks and stairs between stations and attractions. Do not assume seasonal event or cherry-blossom dates without official notices for those dates.
Fukuoka cameras before your trip
Cameras show only the part of the street in view. They cannot confirm attraction opening, train services or congestion across the whole city.
Outside Hakata Station
On arrival day, view the street outside Hakata Station before continuing to your hotel. This camera does not show your hotel's location or platforms inside the station.
Check the camera location and update time to see the weather and street at that spot. This view alone cannot show weather elsewhere or whether attractions are operating.
Tenjin and Watanabe-dori
If you plan an evening in Tenjin, use the Watanabe-dori view for that stretch of street. It does not show whether the underground shopping area or yatai stalls are open.
Check the camera location and update time to see the weather and street at that spot. This view alone cannot show weather elsewhere or whether attractions are operating.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Hakata or Tenjin?
Stay near Hakata Station for airport journeys and frequent JR day trips, or consider Tenjin for dining and shopping. Even within the same district, hotels are closest to different exits. Check the address before booking.
Can I take the subway from Fukuoka Airport's international terminal to Hakata?
Yes, but the subway does not leave directly from the international terminal. Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside arrivals to the south side of the domestic terminal, then transfer to the Airport Line. Hakata is two subway stops away. Allow extra time for immigration, baggage collection and shuttle waits.
