Kochi travel: where should you stay and what should you see?

Stay near Obiyamachi or Ohashidori to combine Kochi Castle’s historic buildings with market meals. For frequent train journeys, the JR Kochi Station area is convenient. You can visit the Ryoma exhibitions and Katsurahama’s coast together on one day, then see Nikobuchi’s gorge water on another. A bus trip to Nikobuchi needs time for both walks to the stop and a suitable return service.

Castle and market, coast or gorge?

Combine Kochi Castle and Hirome Market in the city, or choose Katsurahama for the coast. Decide whether to add Ryoma exhibitions, the botanical garden or Nikobuchi’s water, then compare costs and directions to choose your itinerary.

Itineraries by trip length

See the coast at Katsurahama and the gorge at Nikobuchi on separate days to suit your trip length. First decide whether to visit Nikobuchi by rental car or by bus from Ino.

2 days / 1 night

First choose between the Kochi Castle interior and Ryoma exhibitions. Visit the castle and market, or the market and shopping streets, on day one, then Katsurahama on day two. For a short trip, focus on the city and coast without adding Nikobuchi.

3 days / 2 nights

Choose whether to spend the middle day at the coast or gorge. Visit the Ryoma museum and Katsurahama by MY Yu Bus, or Nikobuchi by rental car. Fit the market and Kochi Castle around that day in the city.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay in Kochi and visit the coast and gorge on separate days, or stay two nights in Kochi followed by one in Ino. With the Ino overnight option, connect a JR train with the gorge bus on moving day.

5 days / 4 nights

From one city hotel, visit the botanical garden, coast and gorge on separate days. For the gorge by bus, stay two nights in Ino to separate moving day from the gorge visit. Check the Paper Museum’s closure period before planning a moving-day visit.

Separate city walks from the coast and gorge

After choosing a base, decide which areas to explore on foot and which require buses. Journeys around Kochi city differ from those to Katsurahama or into the mountains around Ino and Nikobuchi.

A city walk from Kochi Castle down to the market

Visit Kochi Castle’s interiors, then eat at Hirome Market. Check the steps up to the keep and your chosen market stalls’ hours. A walk in the castle park and paid admission to the buildings are separate.

Katsurahama for the coast, Godaisan for the garden

Choose Katsurahama Park for coastal views or Makino Botanical Garden for time among plants and in the conservatory. MY Yu serves both, but 5-day itinerary A visits them on separate days. Swimming is prohibited at Katsurahama beach.

The gorge requires onward travel from Ino Station

From Ino Station, take a gorge-bound bus to Hodono-Iriguchi, then walk roughly 2 km to Nikobuchi. Choose your return bus and allow time to walk back to its stop first. Ino Paper Museum is about a 10-minute walk from the station, so it can be planned separately from the gorge visit.

Bonito meals and onward travel

Plan a Hirome Market meal after city sightseeing. On a day travelling to another city, check meal hours and train times separately.

Order at individual Hirome Market stalls

JR trains and city transport for onward travel

Use the transport guide for travel to another city. If considering the All Shikoku Rail Pass, check official eligibility, covered routes and excluded transport. On an Ino overnight itinerary, distinguish the JR Kochi–Ino railway from the gorge bus. Budget ¥2,860 separately for the Ino Station–Hodono-Iriguchi return bus and compare ordinary rail tickets with the pass.

Choosing bonito dishes in Kochi

Look for katsuo tataki when eating in the city. Check its preparation and seasonings to choose a dish that suits you.

Katsuo tataki: bonito seared on the outside

The surface of the bonito is briefly seared over high heat. Try it with accompaniments such as garlic and spring onions and a yuzu ponzu sauce, or choose salt-seasoned shio tataki. Seasonings and accompaniments vary by stall or restaurant, so check the menu.
