Three nights in Sendai and Miyagi: where would you like more time?

Choose the history and temple route for Date Masamune’s mausoleum, Sendai Castle Site, Zuiganji’s main hall and Entsuin’s gardens. If Zuihoden and castle stairs are difficult, give Bansuisodo, aquarium, Entsuin and museum separate days. This alternative still has station-to-facility walks and garden paths; consider the walking involved too.

Sendai history, Matsushima and the aquarium

Explore Date family materials, mausoleum architecture and castle views, then give Matsushima temples and the aquarium a day each. Visit the museum first, followed by the mausoleum and castle site the next day.

Day 1: museum

Explore Date family materials at the museum to learn about Date Masamune and Sendai history. Take Loople from West Exit stand 16 to Museum, International Center and Ryokusaikan-mae, then walk about three minutes. After the permanent exhibition, return to the same stop.

Continue on Loople in the same direction to Sendai Station. Two ¥300 single rides plus ¥460 permanent exhibition admission for adults and university students total ¥1,060. Special exhibitions cost extra. This uses ordinary fares without a day-pass discount.

Hours are 09:00–16:45, last admission 16:15. Monday and post-public-holiday closures have exceptions; check the official calendar. Recalculate admission on free-entry days or when closed.

Loople Sendai: 20-minute weekdays except August; 15-minute weekends/public holidays and all August; ¥300/¥700

  2. Museum bus stop → Sendai City Museum

  3. Museum, International Center and Ryokusaikan-mae → Sendai Station

Return to the same stop and take Loople in the same direction to Sendai Station.

Loople Sendai: 20-minute weekdays except August; 15-minute weekends/public holidays and all August; ¥300/¥700

Swap the museum with another day’s visit if closed. If the exhibition takes longer, shorten additional sightseeing and leave time to return to Sendai Station.

Day 2: mausoleum and castle site

Choose Zuihoden for Date family mausoleum architecture. Take Loople Sendai from West Exit stand 16 to Zuihoden-mae. Walk about seven minutes to reception, including about 80 steps on the approach. After the mausoleum and museum, descend to the same stop.

Continue on Loople in the same direction to Sendai Castle Site. Climb from the stop to the Honmaru for the statue and city views, then descend to the same stop. The castle-site walk is free; separate exhibitions are excluded. Choose just one city sight if stairs at both would be too much.

Present that day’s Loople day pass before paying for discounted admission of ¥460 for adults and university students. With the ¥700 pass, the subtotal is ¥1,160; ordinary admission is ¥570. Last admission is 16:30 in February–November and 16:00 in December–January. All areas close on 31 December; only Zuihoden opens on 1 January. Return to the station around the same-direction loop.

  1. Sendai Station West Exit, stand 16 → Zuihoden-mae

Sendai tourist association: castle-site entry, Loople stop and Honmaru stairs

  5. Sendai Castle Site stop → Sendai Station

Loople Sendai: 20-minute weekdays except August; 15-minute weekends/public holidays and all August; ¥300/¥700

If stairs or closures mean omitting the mausoleum, recalculate admission and the actual number of bus rides.

Day 3: Matsushima

Explore Zuiganji’s ornate main hall and Entsuin’s garden in Matsushima. Take the Senseki Line for about 40 minutes to Matsushima-Kaigan, a different station from Tohoku Main Line Matsushima. Walk about 10 minutes to Zuiganji for temple architecture and exhibitions, then continue to nearby Entsuin. Allow extra time for entering and buying tickets at both facilities, and for meals.

Entsuin closes at 16:00 in April–November and 15:30 in December–March. If lunch is running late, visit the garden before eating. Shorten coastal walks in strong wind and return on a Sendai-bound train from Matsushima-Kaigan. Two temple admissions of ¥1,500 plus the ¥1,420 area pass total ¥2,920.

  1. Sendai Station → JR Matsushima-Kaigan Station

Choose one temple if both are difficult to fit. If ineligible for the pass, recalculate with the individual JR tickets you will use.

Day 4: aquarium and departure

Start with Uminomori Aquarium’s large tank recreating the Sanriku sea, then explore marine life from Japan and around the world. Take a Senseki Line train stopping at Nakanosakae, about 18 minutes from Sendai, then walk about 15 minutes from the South Exit. Follow the official access map via National Route 45 and the Debana intersection.

Allow about two to three hours for exhibits and breaks. Check opening and last admission for your actual date in the operating calendar. Return to the same station for a Sendai-bound train. Adult admission ¥2,400 plus an eligible ¥1,420 area day pass totals ¥3,820. Using buses both ways between station and aquarium adds ¥400.

Yes. It omits the mausoleum and castle site, but walks remain: about 15 minutes each way from Nakanosakae to the aquarium and five minutes from Matsushima-Kaigan to Entsuin, plus garden sightseeing. The whole route has not been verified as step-free.

Uminomori Aquarium: approximately 18-minute JR journey, walk and ¥200 busEntsuin: admission, seasonal hours and walks from each station

Does one pass cover Matsushima and the aquarium on different days?

The Sendai Area Pass is a day pass. Using it on separate Matsushima and aquarium days requires a pass for each date. Itinerary costs count both days’ passes separately, rather than one for the whole trip. Compare individual JR return fares for your actual dates.

Sendai Area Pass: ¥1,420, passport eligibility and covered routes

Can I use the Sendai Area Pass for a Yamadera day trip?

It includes the Senzan Line between Sendai and Yamadera. A valid non-Japanese passport is required; the adult day pass costs ¥1,420.
