Okinawa main-island travel: where to go from Naha?

Base yourself near Kencho-mae Station in Naha for market meals, Kokusai Street and Shurijo Castle Park. Set aside a separate day for whale sharks and manta rays at Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the north. Ishigaki and Miyakojima are separate islands and require their own flights and accommodation.

Choose car-free itineraries of two to five days, or four- and five-day routes that include caves and crafts at Okinawa World in the south. The southern driving routes require a hire car or a prearranged return taxi journey; vehicle costs are excluded from the displayed admission and transport subtotals.

Castles, marine life or exhibitions?

Choose Shurijo Castle Park for Ryukyu history, or Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in the north for marine life in a large tank. Naha museums, art exhibitions and gardens differ from southern caves and craft activities in direction and the type of visit. Compare admission, opening days and access in the attraction guide, then choose an itinerary below.

Itineraries by trip length

First decide between Yui Rail and walking in Naha, a day in the north, or prearranged return transport to the south. The basic routes below use the same hotel near Kencho-mae Station. Compare northern overnight stays separately in the hotel-base guide.

2 days / 1 night

Choose market meals and Shurijo Castle Park, or the museum and Fukushuen. Both two-day routes stay within Naha, without a northern excursion.

3 days / 2 nights

Compare Route A, with the northern aquarium on day two, and Route B, with separate days for Naha history and exhibitions. The aquarium option includes a return bus trip from Naha.

4 days / 3 nights

Route A visits the northern aquarium and Shurijo Castle Park on separate days. Route B combines southern caves with cultural attractions in Naha and requires a hire car or prearranged return vehicle with a driver.

5 days / 4 nights

Choose between the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center on one day with time left for Naha, or separate days for southern activities and museum and art exhibitions. For longer visits to both northern facilities, compare a Motobu overnight stay and transport back to Naha separately.

Where to stay

Around Kencho-mae Station · 県庁前駅

Consider Kencho-mae for meals and shopping at the southern end of Kokusai Street, and for northern bus trips. When choosing a hotel, check the walk to Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop. The station and bus stop are separate, and not every nearby hotel is beside the stop. These routes start and finish at a hotel near Kencho-mae. Staying elsewhere changes the walks to the station and bus stop.

Around Makishi Station · 牧志駅

Consider Makishi for evenings near the market and Kokusai Street's eastern end. Official station-to-market walking guidance gives about 9 minutes. Northern days need separate access to Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop. A Makishi base changes these routes' Kencho-mae hotel returns and transport costs.

Around Omoromachi Station · おもろまち駅

Consider Omoromachi if museums and art are central to your trip. The museum front entrance is about a 10–15-minute walk from the station. Take Yui Rail for market and Shurijo visits. Staying here changes the Kencho-mae hotel journeys and transport costs shown in these routes.

Accommodation in Motobu · 本部

Compare a Motobu night for repeated or longer aquarium/Ocean Expo Park visits. Naha-based 5-day A makes one northern return; adult bus returns cost 3,800 yen, with admission and Naha trains separate. A Motobu stay changes starting points/bus sections, so compare hotel and transport costs again.

Visit the aquarium on day 2, stay in Motobu, then visit the botanical garden and return to Naha on day 3. A final Naha night reduces long-distance departure-day travel. Choose Kencho Kitaguchi-to-hotel travel and day 3 Naha returns before booking.

Hotel Mahaina Wellness Resort Okinawa · ホテルマハイナ ウェルネスリゾートオキナワ lists a free shuttle towards the aquarium. Get off at sister property Royal View Hotel Churaumi · ロイヤルビューホテル美ら海, then walk about 5 minutes. The shuttle does not enter aquarium admission areas; check return times at reception. Check-in starts 15:00; checkout is 11:00. Ask the hotel about booking-specific conditions and large-luggage storage before/after these times. If accommodation/connections are difficult to arrange, choose the Naha-based route below.

The hotel does not provide airport transfers. For a direct northern airport return, check actual-date Yanbaru Express or Okinawa Airport Shuttle timetables. Distinguish hotel boarding stops and domestic/international terminal arrivals. Allow road traffic and arrive well before airline check-in/baggage deadlines.

Some southbound Airport Shuttle services terminate at Naha Bus Terminal without entering the airport. Confirm airport coverage first. This is a different operator from Yanbaru Express, with separate reservation/fare conditions.

Conditions to check before travelling

Northbound bus timetables and seats

For your northern excursion, check both the outward journey from Kencho Kitaguchi to Kinen Koen Mae and the return journey from Kinen Koen Mae to Kencho Kitaguchi in the official YKB timetable. Extra buses have separate notices specifying their operating days and dates.

Yanbaru Express does not accept seat reservations, and standing is prohibited on motorway sections, so you may be unable to board a full bus. Seats on the next departure are not guaranteed either. Finish sightseeing in time for your chosen return bus, and prepare a taxi alternative and additional funds in case you miss the last departure. Check the operator: another company may use the same route number.

Changing plans in heavy rain, wind or a typhoon

If wind and rain make walking around the park difficult, move your northern excursion to another day. If that is impossible, consider exhibitions in Naha, allowing for museum opening days and last admission.

Check bus operations and facility opening separately. If a typhoon has stopped transport, do not plan to travel to an indoor attraction either.

Changing attractions changes admission and transport costs. Recalculate the revised itinerary.

Shuri and Omoromachi

Choose Shurijo Castle Park · 首里城公園 for castle grounds and Ryukyu history, or Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum · 沖縄県立博物館・美術館 for nature, history and art. Walk to the castle from Shuri Station and to the museum from Omoromachi Station. Allow time for Yui Rail between them and for each visit.

Naha to the southern caves

The driving itinerary assumes a hire car or a vehicle with a driver for the return journey between your hotel and Okinawa World. To travel by bus instead, take route 54 Maekawa Line or route 83 Gyokusendo Line from Naha Bus Terminal to Gyokusendo-mae, then walk about two minutes. Check both directions of the timetable and the section fare for your date separately from the driving-route costs.

Distinguish city train, northern bus and southern vehicle costs

A day at the northern aquarium

Adult aquarium admission of 2,180 yen plus a 3,800-yen YKB return fare between Kencho Kitaguchi and Kinen Koen Mae totals 5,980 yen. This covers neither airport–city trains nor meals or accommodation. The itineraries by trip length show separate subtotals including the city journeys and attractions they actually use.

Adding southern activities or a northern overnight stay

Southern vehicle costs are not included in attraction admission. Staying in the north also changes the departure point from the Naha return-bus itinerary. Compare costs after obtaining vehicle quotes and arranging hotel–bus stop transfers and transport back to Naha or the airport.

Distinguish main-island cameras from other islands

Check views before visiting Naha or the north

The regional camera list includes views near Naha Port and Ocean Expo Park as well as other islands such as Ishigaki and Miyakojima. For a main-island itinerary, choose cameras in the relevant location first. The Ocean Expo Park observation-deck view does not show an aquarium visit indoors. Video alone cannot confirm bus operations or facility opening.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Naha without a car?

Consider the Kencho-mae Station area for city sightseeing and return bus trips to the north. Take Yui Rail to Shurijo Castle Park and the museum, and board Yanbaru Express at Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji for the north. Compare Makishi for Kokusai Street and market meals, or Omoromachi for exhibitions. Check walking times from the hotel address to stations and bus stops, and luggage storage arrangements separately. For Okinawa World in the south, arrange a hire car or a return vehicle with a driver first.

Can I add Ishigaki and Miyakojima to these 5 days?

They are not linked to the main island by road. Do not treat them as nearby stops between Naha/northern sights. Arrange flights, hotels and local transport for each. Separate island guides are available. Official island transport guidance checked 8 October 2026; check flight dates/availability with airlines.
