KIJ → Niigata Station/City/Sado Terminal

Niigata Airport to Niigata Station, Bandai and Furumachi

For Niigata Station hotels or a Shinkansen connection, take the direct limousine bus at JPY 470 one way for an adult. For Bandai City, the E22 local bus has intermediate stops; for Furumachi, change to a city bus at Niigata Station. If catching a ferry to Sado, check whether the miniliner to Niigata Port’s Sado Kisen terminal runs on your date.

From 1F arrivals to the Niigata Station bus

  1. Complete immigration and baggage collection, then enter the 1F arrivals lobby. Domestic passengers also collect their bags before going outside on 1F.
  2. Follow ‘新潟駅方面’ to the Niigata Station bus stop in front of the terminal. Direct and local buses use the same stop. Check the destination and ‘直行’ (direct) or ‘各停’ (all stops) on the vehicle.
  3. For the direct limousine bus, pay JPY 470 when boarding, using cash or a transport IC card such as Suica, PASMO or ICOCA. Follow the driver's luggage-loading instructions.
  4. For the E22 local bus, pay when getting off. Tap your IC card at boarding and exit, or take a numbered ticket at boarding and pay the section fare with it at exit. Bandai City and Niigata Station both cost JPY 470.

Queue without a reservation. The onboard change machine cannot exchange JPY 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 notes; carry coins or JPY 1,000 notes. Suica and ICOCA cannot be topped up on the bus; only the local Ryuto (‘りゅーと’) card supports onboard top-ups. Transport IC payment is different from contactless credit-card payment. Overseas card payment has not been confirmed in the official bus guidance.

The airport has no railway station. First take a bus to Niigata Station for JR or the Shinkansen.

Furumachi usually costs JPY 730 for two buses, with about 35–46 minutes on board. Toki Messe or the port costs JPY 730, with about 42–52 minutes on board. City-bus waiting and the final walk are extra, including after the last airport bus.

Niigata Station hotels, JR and the Shinkansen

Niigata Station · 新潟駅

  1. From arrivals, prepare your fare and take the ‘直行 新潟駅’ bus from outside the terminal. The station-bound E22 also reaches the station.
  2. Get off in the bus-terminal arrival area under the station overpass, after about 25 minutes direct or 33–35 minutes on the local bus. Collect your bags as directed.
  3. For hotels on the Bandai side, follow Bandai Exit (‘万代口’); for the south side, follow South Exit (‘南口’). Use your hotel's actual address for the final walk.
  4. For JR or the Shinkansen, take the station lift or escalator towards the 2F ticket gates. Follow ‘新幹線’, prepare the required basic-fare and limited-express tickets, and check the departure board. Shinkansen platforms are 11–14; use the day's train assignment.

Bays 18 and 4 are airport-bound departure bays. Bay 18 serves the direct bus and bay 4 the ‘E22 新潟空港’ local bus. They are not the arriving bus's fixed drop-off point. The old south-exit and north-side stops are no longer the current arrival location. Bay 4 changed from temporary to permanent operation on 21 September 2024.

You can leave towards your hotel without entering the paid rail gates. Open Bandai Exit → Bandai City walking directions and replace the destination with your hotel. Allow time for ticket queues and station navigation. If you miss a train, ask the seller about your ticket's change/refund rules; bus and JR tickets are separate.

Bandai hotels: take the E22 to the right stop

Bandai City · 万代シテイ

  1. From 1F arrivals, take the ‘各停 新潟駅’ E22 local bus outside the terminal.
  2. The bus passes Miyaura Chugaku-mae (‘宮浦中学前 / 宮浦中学校前’) and Niigata Nippo MEDIA SHIP · 新潟日報メディアシップ. Get off at Bandai City (‘万代シテイ’), station-bound stop 14. Pay JPY 470 at exit; you do not need to continue to the station.
  3. Walk to your hotel's entrance using its address. Hotels across the Bandai area are not all beside this stop.

Pier Bandai · ピアBandai is a different place from the Bandai City shopping area. Airport guidance recommends getting off the local bus at Miyaura Chugaku-mae for Pier Bandai, about 20 minutes on board, then walking. This is not a direct arrival at Toki Messe or the ferry terminal.

If you took the direct airport bus, change at Niigata Station bay 6 to a B1 bus towards Aoyama (‘青山’) or Shiyakusho-mae (‘市役所前’). Bandai City is about five minutes away; the city fare is JPY 260, making JPY 730 in total. Compare the local bus's closer drop-off with the direct bus's luggage space before boarding at the airport.

Furumachi hotels: change to the B1 at Niigata Station

Furumachi · 古町

  1. Take either airport bus to Niigata Station's arrival area under the overpass. Neither goes directly to Furumachi.
  2. At the same terminal, use bay 6 for the B1 Bandai-bashi Line (‘萬代橋ライン’), towards Aoyama or Shiyakusho-mae. Check that the displayed B10, B12 or B13 service stops at Furumachi.
  3. Tap your IC card or take a numbered ticket at boarding. After Bandai City and Honcho (‘本町’), get off at Furumachi (‘古町’), about 10–11 minutes from the station. The regular adult fare is JPY 260, paid at exit.
  4. Find your hotel's block and entrance by address. The map shows Aoyama-bound B1 stop 5; Furumachi has several stops, so this pin does not represent every route or direction.

The usual total is JPY 470 + 260 = 730. The 23:35 B13 night bus costs JPY 520 for the city section, making JPY 990 in total. With heavy bags late at night, compare the remaining buses or a station taxi before planning a long walk across the river. Arrange late check-in with your hotel.

Toki Messe and the Sado ferry terminal use different stops

Toki Messe · 朱鷺メッセ
Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal · 新潟港佐渡汽船ターミナル

Toki Messe: Niigata Station bay 17

  1. Get off the airport bus at Niigata Station and walk to bay 17.
  2. Take a bus displaying ‘朱鷺メッセ経由 佐渡汽船’, or the Pier Bandai service that actually runs via Toki Messe and Sado Kisen. Check the route, not only ‘ピアBandai’ on the destination display.
  3. Get off at ‘朱鷺メッセ’, about 17 minutes from the station. Pay JPY 260 with cash or a transport IC card. From Bandai City Bus Centre, the corresponding service uses bay 6 inside the building.
  4. Follow the transport-plaza pedestrian path to the building entrance, then your event's entrance. The map marks the convention-centre entrance area; exhibition halls, meeting rooms and performances may use different doors. Walking is extra.
Toki Messe bus stop → convention-centre walk ↗

Sado ferry terminal: miniliner or station bay 17

  1. For the miniliner, follow ‘佐渡汽船行き ミニライナー乗り場’ outside the domestic side of 1F. Its stop is separate from the Niigata Station bus.
  2. Pay JPY 1,000 in cash when boarding. The miniliner reaches Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal in about 25 minutes.
  3. If its timetable does not fit, take the station bus, then the bay 17 service via Toki Messe and get off at ‘佐渡汽船’. The two buses cost JPY 730; transfer waiting is extra.
  4. Enter on 1F, then take a lift or escalator to the 3F ticket and waiting area (‘きっぷ売り場’). Car-ferry (‘カーフェリー’) and jetfoil (‘ジェットフォイル’) gates are different.
Sado Kisen bus stop → ferry-terminal walk ↗

The miniliner timetable is valid 1 July–24 October 2026: airport departures 09:20 → 09:45, 12:15 → 12:40, 14:10 → 14:35 and 15:40 → 16:05 at the terminal. No weekday restriction is shown in this table.

No reservation is required, but capacity is 13 and you cannot board when full. Ask Niigata Daiichi Kotsu at 025-377-2506 about booking enquiries, large bags or a changed vehicle. The public guidance does not confirm a booking deadline, exclusive flight eligibility or guaranteed waiting for delayed flights. The miniliner is not a Toki Messe stop service.

Last buses, flight delays and onward connections

These are airport → Niigata Station departures for 1 September–24 October 2026:

  • Direct bus: 21:05 on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • E22: 20:35 weekdays; 20:40 Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  • Port miniliner: 15:40 → 16:05, under its separate July–October timetable.

The 21:05 direct bus is marked as potentially departing later according to aircraft arrival. Waiting may be limited; it does not guarantee boarding after every international arrival. After collecting your bags, ask the information desk or bus staff which departures remain. Do not add 25 minutes to landing time and treat that as a guaranteed station arrival.

From the station to Bandai or Furumachi late at night

The B1 timetable revised on 29 March 2026 gives the last regular-fare station departures as 22:42 weekdays, 22:57 Saturdays and 22:27 Sundays/public holidays. The daily 23:35 B13 follows, reaching Bandai City at 23:40 and Furumachi at 23:45. The city fare is JPY 260 normally or JPY 520 on the night service. Check your date's timetable for events, diversions or cancellations. After the last bus, use the official station taxi rank and your hotel's address.

Check the final Toki Messe/port service separately in the operator's connecting timetable, or ask Niigata Kotsu on 025-246-6333. If buses have ended, compare a taxi. If ferries have also ended, consider staying in Niigata and travelling the next day.

The last Tokyo train is not the last Toki departure

JR's October 2026 weekday and holiday timetables show the last regular Tokyo-bound Toki Shinkansen leaving Niigata at 21:40. The 22:23 Toki ends at Echigo-Yuzawa, not Tokyo. Tokyo Station · 東京駅 and Echigo-Yuzawa Station · 越後湯沢駅 are different destinations. Check the JR timetable, seats and any date-specific trains. Allow time for tickets, gates and the platform. The 21:05 airport bus does not guarantee a connection to the 21:40 Tokyo train.

Can you reach Sado on your airport-arrival day?

This guide uses Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal → Ryotsu Port · 両津港, Sado Island · 佐渡島. Other Niigata piers and the Naoetsu–Ogi route use different departure arrangements. Toki Messe is a separate neighbouring facility.

Car ferry: 2 hours 30 minutes

The regular October 2026 Niigata departures are 06:00, 09:25, 12:35, 16:05 and 19:30. The last reaches Ryotsu at 22:00. From 1 October–31 December, the adult second-class one-way fare without a vehicle is JPY 3,630, including the fuel adjustment. Other classes, vehicles and excess bags cost separately.

Check availability for your date and class. With a vehicle, arrive at the vehicle waiting area one hour before departure and complete procedures 30 minutes before. Ask your rental company whether taking its car on the ferry is permitted.

Jetfoil: 1 hour 7 minutes

The last daily jetfoil is 14:40 → 15:47 on 1–12 October, or 15:30 → 16:37 on 13 October–31 December. Extra sailings 12:55 → 14:02 and 16:20 → 17:27 run only on 2–4 and 9–12 October. There is no 16:20 sailing on 5 October.

The adult one-way fare from 1 October–31 December is JPY 8,310, including the express, reserved-seat and fuel charges. Select your date and available seats before booking. Jetfoils cannot carry cars; use the designated luggage area near the entrance.

For foot passengers, official guidance recommends reaching the port 30–40 minutes before departure when collecting tickets at a counter or machine, or 10–20 minutes before with a prepared digital ticket. Gates normally open 15–20 minutes before departure. Niigata Kotsu separately recommends allowing time to finish boarding procedures 30 minutes before sailing. Use that more generous allowance when connecting by bus.

The 15:40 miniliner is scheduled to arrive at 16:05, only 15 minutes before the limited-date 16:20 jetfoil. This is not a comfortable connection for counter ticketing or possible road delays. Even a digital ticket does not protect you from traffic, full vehicles or ferry cancellations. The 25-minute drive does not include immigration or bus waiting.

Luggage, changes and cancellations

The cabin allowance is two items per person, each within 2 m total length + width + height and 30 kg. The operator may permit a quantity exception when transport is not affected. Oversized items and packed bicycles require separate luggage tickets; the October–December charge on this route is JPY 600 per item on either ferry type.

The car ferry's luggage area is in the 3F entrance hall; the jetfoil's is near the 1F entrance on the right in the direction of travel. Keep valuables with you.

Prepaid online bookings have cancellation charges of JPY 200 per person, one way, up to seven days before; 10% six to two days before; 30% from the previous day until departure; and 100% after departure or for a no-show. The minimum is JPY 200; vehicle and some class calculations differ. If the booked sailing is officially cancelled, no cancellation fee applies, but cancelling yourself before that decision may incur a fee. A flight delay is not automatic grounds for free cancellation. Contact the seller before sailing if you expect to miss it. Issued tickets, partly used return tickets and package products have separate procedures.

Taxis after the last bus, or with heavy luggage

Use the official ‘タクシーのりば’ rank outside 1F, or contact an airport-listed taxi company with your hotel address, passenger count, bags and actual arrival time. Airport guidance estimates about 25 minutes to the station; Sado Kisen estimates about 30 minutes from the airport to its terminal. Traffic varies.

Ordinary taxis are metered. Sado Kisen's approximately JPY 3,000 small-taxi estimate to the terminal is a reference, not a fixed offer or a current quote from every company. Confirm night, toll and waiting charges when booking. Airport fixed fares require a designated area and advance reservation; the airport's night/early-morning period is 22:00–05:00. Check your address's eligibility rather than applying that table to every metered taxi.

For a booked car, confirm flight-delay waiting, change, cancellation and contact arrangements before paying. These differ from airport-bus and miniliner policies.

Rental cars for an itinerary beyond the city

Go to the 1F rental counters near the information desk. Airport-listed firms include Nippon, Toyota, Nissan, Times and Orix. Confirm any office shuttle, hours, driving documents valid in Japan, vehicle size, one-way return and winter equipment. Fuel, tolls and hotel parking are not necessarily included.

Snow or ice can make suitcase walks slower. Check the final route and lift access; ask your hotel about late-night arrival if the walk is long. Use the day's transport notices rather than treating weather as proof of cancellation or a safety rating.

Official tickets and booking information

These are official operator links, not affiliate offers. Pay bus fares using the methods above; book ferries separately. Rail passes and Sado tours have their own coverage and eligibility rules.

A changed flight may require separate ferry, JR or car-booking changes. Read the seller's rules for the actual ticket you choose.

Check each operator before travelling

Flights, buses, trains and ferries are operated separately. One running normally does not guarantee the next connection.

Niigata Airport transport FAQ

How do I get from Niigata Airport to Niigata Station?

Take the direct limousine bus from outside 1F arrivals: about 25 minutes, JPY 470 one way for an adult. The E22 local bus costs the same and takes about 33–35 minutes, with intermediate stops. The airport has no railway station.

What is the difference between the direct bus and the E22?

The direct bus runs to Niigata Station without intermediate stops and takes payment at boarding. The E22 passes Miyaura Chugaku-mae, MEDIA SHIP and Bandai City, with payment at exit. For Bandai hotels, compare the E22 stop with your address. Neither bus goes directly to Furumachi or Toki Messe.

Where does the airport bus stop at Niigata Station?

It arrives in the bus-terminal drop-off area under the overpass, not the old south-exit stop. Bays 18 and 4 are departures back to the airport, not fixed arrival bays. For JR and the Shinkansen, follow the station signs towards the 2F gates.

Do I need to reserve the airport bus?

The direct bus and E22 do not require reservations. Seats and luggage space are not guaranteed; follow staff if a vehicle is full or changes. The Sado Kisen Miniliner also accepts passengers without reservations, but its maximum is 13 and you cannot board when full.

How do I pay the bus fare?

Pay the direct bus at boarding and the E22 at exit. Cash and transport IC cards such as Suica, PASMO and ICOCA are accepted. On the E22, tap at boarding and exit, or take a numbered ticket and pay the section fare when getting off. Overseas contactless credit-card payment is not confirmed. The port miniliner takes cash at boarding.

Which bus should I take for Bandai or Furumachi hotels?

For Bandai City, take the E22 and get off at its station-bound Bandai City stop. For Furumachi, change at Niigata Station bay 6 to a B1 bus towards Aoyama or Shiyakusho-mae. The two normal bus fares total JPY 730. The 23:35 B13 night bus makes the total JPY 990.

How do I get to Toki Messe?

Take an airport bus to Niigata Station, then a bay 17 bus that runs via Toki Messe towards Sado Kisen or Pier Bandai. Get off at Toki Messe, not the ferry terminal. The total is JPY 730 and about 42–52 minutes on board, plus transfer waiting and walking to the building. The direct port miniliner is not a Toki Messe stop service.

Is there a direct bus to the Sado ferry terminal?

The Sado Kisen Miniliner timetable for 1 July–24 October 2026 gives airport departures at 09:20, 12:15, 14:10 and 15:40, arriving about 25 minutes later. It costs JPY 1,000 cash at boarding, with no reservation required and a 13-person capacity. If it does not fit, change at Niigata Station bay 17 or compare a taxi.

Can I reach Sado on the day I arrive at the airport?

Only if arrival procedures, road travel and ferry check-in fit the Niigata–Ryotsu timetable. On 5 October 2026, the last car ferry is 19:30 and the last jetfoil 14:40. The extra 16:20 jetfoil runs only on 2–4 and 9–12 October. For counter tickets, reach the port 30–40 minutes before sailing; bus guidance recommends completing procedures 30 minutes before. Delays, full vehicles and cancellations can break the connection.

Can I travel with a large suitcase?

Follow the direct-bus staff for suitcase loading. On local buses, manage your own bags and keep aisles and doors clear. Ask the miniliner or booked-car operator about size and quantity. Sado Kisen permits two cabin items per person, each within 2 m combined dimensions and 30 kg; excess items and bicycles have separate conditions.

What if a flight delay makes me miss the last bus?

For 1 September–24 October 2026, the last airport-to-station direct bus is 21:05; the E22 ends at 20:35 weekdays or 20:40 weekends and public holidays. The direct bus may depart later according to aircraft arrival, but unlimited waiting and boarding after every international arrival are not guaranteed. Ask airport staff after collecting your bags. If services have ended, use the official taxi rank or an airport-listed company with your hotel address and luggage details.
