Niigata Airport to Niigata Station and the city
Take the nonstop airport bus if you are staying near Niigata Station or connecting to a Shinkansen. The adult one-way fare is ¥470. For a hotel in Bandai City, the local E22 bus lets you get off before the station. For Furumachi, change to a city bus at the station. Heading to Sado Island? Compare the airport's Miniliner schedule with your ferry departure before booking a connection.

From the arrivals lobby to the Niigata Station bus
- After immigration and baggage claim, leave through the first-floor arrivals lobby. Domestic passengers also collect their bags and go outside on the first floor.
- Follow signs for 新潟駅方面, meaning “toward Niigata Station.” The nonstop and local buses use the same stop in front of the terminal. Check the vehicle's destination and whether it says 直行 (nonstop) or 各停 (local).
- On the nonstop bus, pay ¥470 when boarding. Cash and transit IC cards, including Suica, PASMO and ICOCA, are accepted. Follow the driver's instructions for storing your suitcase.
- On local E22, pay when getting off. Tap your IC card when boarding and again when exiting. If paying cash, take a numbered ticket when boarding, then pay the fare with that ticket when you get off. Both Bandai City and Niigata Station cost ¥470 from the airport.
No seat reservation is required. Bring coins or ¥1,000 bills: the bus cannot change ¥2,000, ¥5,000 or ¥10,000 bills. Only Niigata's Ryuto card (りゅーと) can be recharged on board; Suica and other outside-region cards cannot. Transit IC cards are not the same as contactless bank cards. Onboard credit-card payment is not confirmed in the official guidance, so bring cash or a funded transit card.
The airport has no rail station. Travel to Niigata Station first for JR trains or the Shinkansen.

Choose a route for your hotel or onward connection
These are vehicle ride times, not total time after landing. Add immigration, baggage claim, the walk to the stop, waiting, transfers, ticket purchase and the final walk. The airport quotes about 33 minutes for the local bus; the operator quotes about 35. Traffic can make either service slower.
| Transportation | Destination | Fare (JPY) | Ride time | Transfers | Reservation | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nonstop airport bus | Niigata Station terminal under the elevated tracks | 470 | About 25 minutes | None | Not required | Dedicated suitcase space; follow vehicle instructions | Station hotels or JR/Shinkansen connections |
| Local E22 | Bandai City or Niigata Station | 470 to either destination | Station: about 33–35 minutes; Bandai City is earlier | None | Not required | Carry your own bags; keep aisles and doors clear | Bandai City hotels or intermediate stops |
| Airport bus + B1 | Station stop 6 → Furumachi | 730; 990 using the 23:35 late-night bus | 25–35 + 10–11 minutes, plus transfer wait | 1 | Not required | Manage bags yourself on the city bus | Furumachi hotels |
| Airport bus + city bus | Station stop 17 → Toki Messe or Sado Kisen | 730 | 25–35 + about 17 minutes, plus transfer wait | 1 | Not required | Manage bags yourself on the city bus | Toki Messe, or the port when Miniliner times do not fit |
| Sado Kisen Miniliner | Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal | 1,000 | About 25 minutes | None | Not required; 13-passenger capacity | Call about large bags and available space | A port connection matching one of four departures |
| Taxi or reserved vehicle | Your hotel, Toki Messe or ferry terminal | Metered or quoted per vehicle | Station: about 25 minutes; port: about 30; traffic varies | None | Use the stand or book ahead | Confirm passenger and luggage capacity | Late arrivals, groups or large bags |
| Rental car | First-floor counter → rental office → destination | Date/vehicle quote; fuel, parking and tolls extra | Pickup/office transfer plus driving | Ask whether an office transfer is needed | Book and check driving documents and opening hours | Choose a vehicle with enough space | Travel to several mainland destinations beyond the city |
Two buses to Furumachi usually cost ¥730, with about 35–46 minutes of riding. The station transfer to Toki Messe or the port also costs ¥730, with about 42–52 minutes of riding. Add the wait for the second bus and the walk to your destination; those are not included in the airport bus's 25-minute estimate.
Niigata Station hotels and Shinkansen connections
Niigata Station · 新潟駅
- Prepare cash or a funded transit card, then board the bus marked 直行 新潟駅 outside the terminal. Local E22 also reaches the station.
- Get off at the current bus terminal beneath the elevated tracks: about 25 minutes by nonstop bus or 33–35 minutes by local bus. Collect your bags as directed.
- For hotels on the Bandai side, follow 万代口 (Bandai Exit). For hotels on the south side, follow 南口 (South Exit). Use your hotel's actual address for the final walk.
- For JR or Shinkansen services, take an elevator or escalator to the second-floor ticket gates. Follow 新幹線 signs for the Shinkansen and check the departure board. You need a base-fare ticket and the appropriate limited-express ticket. Shinkansen platforms are 11–14; use the platform shown for your train.
Stops 18 and 4 are for the return trip to the airport: 18 for the nonstop bus and 4 for E22 新潟空港. They are not the airport-bus arrival point. Avoid older directions to the former south-exit limousine stop or stops outside the north side. Stop 4's temporary arrangement ended on September 21, 2024.
You do not have to pass through train ticket gates to reach your hotel's side of the station. Walking directions from the Bandai Exit toward Bandai City. Change the destination to your hotel. Allow time for ticket lines and station access. Bus and JR tickets are separate; if you miss a train, ask the seller about changes or refunds for your particular rail ticket.

Bandai City: get off before Niigata Station
Bandai City · 万代シテイ
- Board local E22, marked 各停 新潟駅, outside the first-floor arrivals area.
- The bus passes Miyaura Chugaku-mae (宮浦中学前 / 宮浦中学校前) and Niigata Nippo MEDIA SHIP (新潟日報メディアシップ). Get off at Bandai City, station-bound stop 14. The fare is ¥470, paid when exiting.
- Follow walking directions to your hotel's entrance. Hotels described as being in “Bandai” are not all beside this stop.
Pier Bandai (ピアBandai) is a different place from the Bandai City shopping district. The airport's official directions use the local bus to Miyaura Chugaku-mae, about 20 minutes of riding, followed by a walk. This is not a direct arrival at Toki Messe or the ferry terminal.
If you have already taken the nonstop bus to Niigata Station, board B1 toward Aoyama or Shiyakusho-mae at station stop 6 and get off at Bandai City. That ride takes about five minutes and costs ¥260, making the airport-to-Bandai total ¥730. With large bags, weigh the closer local-bus stop against the nonstop bus's luggage storage.

Furumachi: change to B1 at Niigata Station
Furumachi · 古町
- Take either airport bus to Niigata Station. Neither airport service stops in Furumachi.
- At station stop 6, board the B1 Bandai-bashi Line (萬代橋ライン) toward Aoyama (青山) or Shiyakusho-mae (市役所前). Check that the departure, including services labeled B10, B12 or B13, stops at Furumachi.
- Tap your IC card or take a numbered ticket on boarding. After Bandai City and Honcho (本町), get off at 古町. The ride takes about 10–11 minutes and normally costs ¥260, paid when exiting.
- Find your hotel's block by address. The map pin shows Furumachi stop 5 toward Aoyama; other routes and the opposite direction use different stops.
The normal total from the airport is ¥470 + ¥260 = ¥730. B13 at 23:35 has a ¥520 city fare, for a ¥990 total. Late at night, compare the remaining buses with a taxi rather than assuming you can comfortably walk across the river with bags. Arrange late check-in with your hotel.

Toki Messe and the ferry terminal have different stops
Toki Messe · 朱鷺メッセ
Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal · 新潟港佐渡汽船ターミナル
Toki Messe: station stop 17
- Take an airport bus to Niigata Station and walk to stop 17 in the same terminal.
- Choose 朱鷺メッセ経由 佐渡汽船, meaning Sado Kisen via Toki Messe. For a bus marked ピアBandai, confirm that the particular route serves Toki Messe or Sado Kisen before boarding.
- Get off at 朱鷺メッセ. The ride from the station is about 17 minutes and costs ¥260, payable with cash or a transit IC card. From Bandai City Bus Center, this route uses indoor stop 6.
- Follow the pedestrian route from the stop through the transport plaza to the building entrance, then follow your event's entrance instructions. The map marks the convention center entrance area, not every exhibition or performance entrance. The final walk is separate from the bus time.
Sado ferry terminal: Miniliner or station stop 17
- From first-floor arrivals, find 佐渡汽船行き ミニライナー乗り場 in front of the domestic side of the terminal. This is a separate stop from the Niigata Station buses.
- If its schedule works for your ferry, board the Sado Kisen Miniliner and pay ¥1,000 in cash when boarding. It takes about 25 minutes to the ferry terminal.
- If you cannot use the Miniliner, take an airport bus to Niigata Station, then the bus from stop 17 via Toki Messe to 佐渡汽船. The total fare is ¥730, with extra time for the transfer and wait.
- Enter the terminal on the first floor and take an elevator or escalator to the third-floor きっぷ売り場 ticket and waiting area. The car ferry (カーフェリー) and Jetfoil (ジェットフォイル) have separate boarding gates.
For July 1–October 24, 2026, Miniliner departures and arrivals are 09:20 → 09:45, 12:15 → 12:40, 14:10 → 14:35 and 15:40 → 16:05. The table lists no day-of-week restrictions. It runs nonstop to the port; it is not a Toki Messe service.
No reservation is required, but capacity is 13 and you cannot board when full. For reservations, large bags or vehicle questions, call Niigata Daiichi Kotsu at 025-377-2506. The public notice does not specify a reservation deadline, an exclusive airline connection or guaranteed waiting for delayed flights.

Last buses and delayed arrivals
These departures run from the airport toward the city, not from the city to the airport. The airport bus table applies September 1–October 24, 2026.
- Nonstop airport bus: 21:05 every day.
- Local E22: 20:35 on weekdays; 20:40 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
- Port Miniliner: 15:40 → 16:05, under its separate July 1–October 24 schedule.
The 21:05 nonstop bus may depart later to match an arriving flight, but that does not mean it waits indefinitely or guarantees boarding after international arrivals procedures. After collecting your bags, ask airport information or bus staff which departures remain. Do not calculate a guaranteed hotel or train connection by adding just 25 minutes to landing time.
Late buses from the station to Bandai City and Furumachi
Under the B1 schedule revised March 29, 2026, the last regular-fare departures from Niigata Station are 22:42 weekdays, 22:57 Saturdays and 22:27 Sundays/public holidays. B13 also leaves daily at 23:35, reaching Bandai City at 23:40 and Furumachi at 23:45. The normal city fare is ¥260; the late-night fare is ¥520. Check for detours or suspensions on your date. If the last bus has gone, use the station's official taxi stand and give the driver your hotel address. B1 timetable
Check the last stop-17 bus to Toki Messe and the port separately for your date through the operator's timetable, or call 025-246-6333. If buses have ended, compare taxis. If ferries have also ended, consider staying overnight in Niigata before continuing.
The last Tokyo-bound Shinkansen is not the last train to leave Niigata
JR's October 2026 weekday/weekend table lists the last regular Tokyo-bound Toki at 21:40. The 22:23 Toki terminates at Echigo-Yuzawa, not Tokyo. Tokyo Station (東京駅) and Echigo-Yuzawa Station (越後湯沢駅) are different destinations. Add time for ticket purchase, gates and platforms, and check date-specific services and seats. The airport's 21:05 bus does not guarantee a connection to the 21:40 Tokyo train.

Can you reach Sado Island on your arrival day?
This guide uses the Niigata Port Sado Kisen Terminal → Ryotsu Port (両津港) route to Sado Island (佐渡島). Other Niigata Port piers and the Naoetsu–Ogi route are not the same departure point. Toki Messe is a separate neighboring facility.
Car ferry: 2 hours 30 minutes
The October 2026 regular departures from Niigata are 06:00, 09:25, 12:35, 16:05 and 19:30. The last reaches Ryotsu at 22:00. From October 1–December 31, an adult second-class one-way ticket costs ¥3,630 including the fuel adjustment, without a vehicle. Other classes, vehicles and oversized baggage cost extra.
Check availability for your date, class and vehicle. With a vehicle, arrive at the vehicle waiting area one hour before sailing and finish check-in 30 minutes before departure. Ask your rental company whether you may take its car aboard.
Jetfoil: 1 hour 7 minutes
The last daily Jetfoil is 14:40 → 15:47 on October 1–12, and 15:30 → 16:37 on October 13–December 31. Extra departures at 12:55 → 14:02 and 16:20 → 17:27 run only October 2–4 and 9–12. There is no 16:20 sailing on October 5.
The adult one-way fare for October 1–December 31 is ¥8,310, including the express, reserved-seat and fuel charges. Book for the correct date and check seats. Jetfoils do not carry cars. Store large bags in the designated entrance-area space and follow the vessel's boarding instructions.
For passengers without vehicles, Sado Kisen recommends arriving at the port 30–40 minutes before departure when buying or collecting tickets at a counter or machine, or 10–20 minutes before when a digital ticket is ready. Gates usually open 15–20 minutes before departure. Separately, Niigata Kotsu advises bus passengers to leave enough time to finish boarding procedures at least 30 minutes before sailing. Use the more generous allowance for a bus connection.
For example, the 15:40 Miniliner is scheduled to arrive at 16:05. That leaves only 15 minutes before the extra 16:20 Jetfoil on its operating dates, so it is not a comfortable connection for counter ticketing or a delayed vehicle. Even with a digital ticket, traffic, a full bus or suspended ferry can disrupt the connection.
Bags, changes and cancellations
The standard cabin allowance is two items per person, each within a combined three-side measurement of 2 m and a weight of 30 kg. The operator may allow quantity exceptions when carriage is not affected. Oversized items and packaged bicycles require separate baggage tickets; the October–December baggage charge on this route is ¥600 per item for both vessel types. Use the car ferry's third-floor entrance hall or the Jetfoil's first-floor right-hand entrance area, and keep valuables with you.
For prepaid online Sado Kisen reservations, cancellation normally costs ¥200 per person one way at least seven days before departure; 10% six to two days before; 30% the day before or before sailing on the day; and 100% after departure or for a no-show. The minimum is ¥200; vehicle and some class calculations differ. No cancellation fee applies after your sailing is officially suspended, but canceling before that decision can incur a fee. An airline delay does not automatically qualify for free cancellation. Contact the seller before departure if you will be late. Issued tickets, partly used round trips and packaged travel products have separate procedures.

Taxis, reserved vehicles and rental cars
Use the official タクシーのりば outside the first floor, or book with a taxi company listed by the airport. Give your hotel address, passenger count, suitcase count and expected arrival time. The airport quotes about 25 minutes to the station; Sado Kisen quotes about 30 minutes from the airport to its terminal. Traffic can add time.
Regular taxis are metered. Sado Kisen's approximate ¥3,000 small-taxi estimate to the port is a reference, not a current fixed-price offer from every company. Ask about the total, late-night surcharges, tolls and waiting charges. Airport fixed-fare products require advance booking and an eligible destination zone. The airport guidance distinguishes 22:00–05:00 as the late-night/early-morning period; do not apply that product's conditions to all metered taxis. Confirm eligibility using your actual Bandai, Furumachi or station hotel address.
Before booking a vehicle, check how flight delays affect waiting, changes, cancellation and contact arrangements. Airport buses, Miniliners and taxis have different policies.
Rental cars for travel beyond the city
Go to your company's rental counter near first-floor general information. With the airport-listed Nippon, Toyota, Nissan, Times or Orix, confirm any office transfer, opening hours, required driving documents, luggage space, one-way return and winter equipment. Fuel, tolls and hotel parking are not necessarily included in the rental price.
In winter, snow and ice can slow the final walk with a suitcase. Check elevators and your hotel's entrance route; ask the hotel about alternatives to a long late-night walk. Weather alone does not establish whether a service is canceled—check operating notices.

Niigata Airport transfer FAQ
How do I get from Niigata Airport to Niigata Station?
Take the nonstop bus outside first-floor arrivals: about 25 minutes, ¥470 one way for adults. Local E22 costs the same and takes about 33–35 minutes with intermediate stops. The airport has no rail station.
How are the nonstop and local airport buses different?
The nonstop bus runs to Niigata Station and you pay when boarding. Local E22 serves Miyaura Chugaku-mae, MEDIA SHIP and Bandai City, and you pay when exiting. Use the local bus for a convenient Bandai City stop. Neither airport bus goes directly to Furumachi or Toki Messe.
Where does the airport bus arrive at Niigata Station?
It arrives at the current bus terminal beneath the elevated tracks. Stops 18 and 4 are airport-bound departure stops, not the arrival point. Follow the current station plan rather than old north- or south-exit bus directions. JR and Shinkansen ticket gates are on the second floor.
Do I need to reserve the airport bus?
No reservation is required for the nonstop bus or local E22. That does not guarantee space when a bus is full or a vehicle changes. The Sado Kisen Miniliner also accepts passengers without reservations, but has a 13-person capacity and cannot take more when full.
How do I pay for the bus?
Pay on boarding the nonstop bus, or on exiting local E22. Both accept cash and transit IC cards such as Suica, PASMO and ICOCA. On E22, tap on and off, or take a numbered ticket on boarding and pay with it when exiting. Contactless overseas bank-card payment is not confirmed. The Miniliner requires cash payment on boarding.
Which bus should I use for Bandai City or Furumachi?
For Bandai City, take local E22 and get off before Niigata Station for ¥470. For Furumachi, change at station stop 6 to B1 toward Aoyama or Shiyakusho-mae. The normal airport-plus-city fare is ¥470 + ¥260 = ¥730. B13 at 23:35 has a ¥520 city fare, making the total ¥990.
How do I reach Toki Messe from the airport?
Take an airport bus to Niigata Station, then change at stop 17 to a bus serving Toki Messe and get off at 朱鷺メッセ. The total fare is ¥730 and the combined ride time is about 42–52 minutes, excluding transfer waits and the final walk. The airport Miniliner goes nonstop to the Sado Kisen terminal; it is not a Toki Messe bus.
Is there a direct bus to the Sado ferry terminal?
For July 1–October 24, 2026, the Sado Kisen Miniliner leaves the airport at 09:20, 12:15, 14:10 and 15:40, reaching the terminal about 25 minutes later. It costs ¥1,000, paid in cash when boarding. No reservation is required, but capacity is 13. Otherwise, transfer at Niigata Station stop 17 or ask for a taxi.
Can I reach Sado on the day my flight arrives?
Only if your actual airport departure leaves enough time for the Niigata–Ryotsu sailing and port procedures. On October 5, 2026, the last car ferry is 19:30 and the last Jetfoil is 14:40; the extra 16:20 Jetfoil operates only October 2–4 and 9–12. Allow 30–40 minutes at the port for counter ticketing, plus immigration, bags and transport waits. Delays, full services or suspended sailings can break a connection.
Can I travel with a large suitcase?
The nonstop bus has designated suitcase storage; follow the driver's instructions. On local buses, handle your own bags without blocking aisles or doors. Ask the Miniliner or reserved-vehicle company about large bags. Sado Kisen's standard cabin allowance is two items per person within a combined three-side measurement of 2 m and weight of 30 kg; oversized items and bicycles have separate rules.
What if my flight is delayed and I miss the last bus?
For September 1–October 24, the last nonstop airport bus is 21:05 daily. Local E22 ends at 20:35 weekdays or 20:40 weekends/public holidays. The 21:05 bus may adjust to an arriving flight, but unlimited waiting and boarding after immigration are not guaranteed. Ask airport staff about remaining buses after collecting your bags. If service has ended, use the official taxi stand or contact an operator with your hotel address and luggage requirements.
