From the 1st floor of the arrival hall to the 2nd floor of Sendai Airport Station

Sendai Airport Station · 仙台空港駅

International arrival

  1. After completing immigration, baggage, and customs, exit to the international arrivals lobby on the 1st floor.
  2. Head towards the bank on the official map and pass the Centre Plaza with its fountain.
  3. Take the escalator on the front left to the 2nd floor and cross the passageway connecting the airport station.
  4. Buy a ticket to Sendai from the station vending machine or go through the ticket gate with a charged IC card.
  5. Check the destination and departure platform for ‘仙台 / Sendai’ and get on.

Domestic flight arrival

  2. Go towards the convenience store, then turn right in front of the convenience store and take the escalator to the 2nd floor.
  3. Go to the connecting passage → station ticket machine/gates → platform for Sendai.

If you have a large suitcase or need assistance, check the elevator route on the airport floor map. The station's ticket gate, waiting room, and platform are located on the second floor.

The airport quotes about two minutes across the 2F connecting passage to the station gates. It does not include the time to come up from the 1st floor arrival hall, waiting for the elevator, or ticketing. The departure location is also different from the approximately 3-minute guide based on the 2nd floor departure lobby for domestic flights.

Sendai Airport Railway: stay on the train at Natori

Airport → Mitazono · 美田園 → Morisekinoshita · 杜せきのした → Natori · 名取 → Minami-Sendai · 南仙台 → Taishido · 太子堂 → Nagamachi · 長町 → Sendai

The airport line joins JR’s Tohoku Main Line at Natori. Current scheduled airport departures run through to Sendai; no change is required simply because the operator/line changes. Check the day's display during disruption.

Current local services rather than older rapid-train times

The timetable effective 14 March 2026 does not list airport-origin rapid services. Local trains stop at all the stations above. The operator quotes about 25 minutes; scheduled examples range about 24–31: 05:31→05:55, 07:21→07:52 and the final 23:23→23:51.

Adult one-way fare is JPY 680 paper or JPY 672 IC; child 340 paper or 335 IC. Children aged six to under twelve use child fare; under-six children are infants. Up to two infants travel free per accompanying adult; the third needs a child ticket.

Accommodation on the east side of the station

Airport Railway arrival platform → 2nd floor ticket gate → East-West free passage → East exit → Accommodation

If the address of your accommodation is east of the station, do not go to the west shopping street first, but follow the ‘東口’ signs. The east-west free passage on the second floor connects both sides. If you check which road the main entrance to your accommodation is on, you can reduce the need to drag your suitcase around the building.

The Airport Railway mainly arrives at lines 3 and 4, but it is not a fixed platform. Check the arrival platforms, ticket gates, and exits on the JR official floor map.

Ichibancho hotels: one subway stop or a walk

For Ichibancho · 一番町, change from JR to Sendai Subway Station · 地下鉄仙台駅, take the Tozai Line towards Yagiyama Zoological Park · 八木山動物公園 and alight one stop later at Aoba-dori Ichibancho · 青葉通一番町駅. It takes about two minutes and costs JPY 210 extra: JPY 890 with a paper airport ticket or 882 with airport IC. JR-to-subway walking, gates and waiting are additional.

Subway Sendai’s concourse is B1; Tozai platforms are B4. Notices list Central 2’s lift stopped and North 5 closed, so use the latest station plan with bags. At Ichibancho, North 1 serves the northern shopping area, North 2 Fujisaki · 藤崎, and South 1 Sun Mall Ichibancho · サンモール一番町. Choose by hotel address.

JR Aoba-dori · あおば通駅 is a separate Senseki Line station, not Subway Sendai or Aoba-dori Ichibancho. The airport railway does not run there directly.

External walking directions are based on the area around the station and exit. Exit names can be displayed for the entire station location, so please check the official station map above for stairs/elevators and North 1 and South 1 exits.

Sendai Airport → Matsushima: change at Sendai

For the coastal sightseeing area, choose Matsushima-Kaigan Station · 松島海岸駅: airport railway → Sendai → a JR Senseki train calling at Matsushima-Kaigan → coastal walk.

Senseki platforms 9/10 are B2; the checked final Kaigan-bound service leaves platform 10. Tourism guidance gives about forty minutes from Sendai. Check actual calls on an Ishinomaki-bound train, since some services terminate earlier.

Matsushima Station · 松島駅 is on the Tohoku Main Line: around 25 minutes from Sendai, but an additional twenty-minute walk to the sightseeing area. Senseki-Tohoku Line services do not necessarily call at Matsushima-Kaigan. Choose the station near your hotel.

The onward fare depends on route/ticket/pass and is additional to JPY 680 airport→Sendai. Ask the machine/staff for a through ticket if needed.

Scope of application for transport IC card, large luggage, and pass

Airport Railway provides 11 types of supported IC cards, including Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, and icsca. PiTaPa cannot be used as a postpaid service and requires recharging. Don't assume you can buy a new Suica at the airport station.

The operator does not sell new Suica cards at its stations. Machines accept cash and supported IC. Credit cards cannot be used, IC recharge can be done in cash.

Please use the luggage space or luggage rack and manage your luggage yourself so that it does not occupy passenger seats. JR's general rules are that you can carry up to 2 pieces of luggage, each with a total of 250cm on all 3 sides, 2m in length, and 30kg in weight. Please check with the operator of the entire route for excess baggage and sports equipment.

In times of congestion, loading and carrying may be restricted, and reservations for luggage space or seating are not guaranteed.

Don’t judge the inclusion of the Airport Railway just by the name ‘JR Pass’

Current JR EAST PASS The official coverage list includes the Sendai Airport Transit Line. 5-day and 10-day passes are used on consecutive days of validity starting from the selected date, and the Sendai City Subway is not on the list. In addition to going to the airport, compare the trains you will take, and if you have already purchased a pass, check the product name, effective start date, eligibility, and whether the exchange has been completed.

Do not be confused with the prices and sales conditions of old ‘Tohoku region’ products.

You cannot pass through the ticket gate with just the reservation confirmation. Please receive and exchange your pass before use. The user's original non-Japanese passport is required, and the new JR EAST PASS is indicated as an exception to the short-term stay visa requirement.

Changes to the expiration date after receipt or purchase are not possible, except for some exceptions. Exchange/receipt locations and change/refund processing locations vary depending on the purchase method, so please check the conditions of the sales channel you will use in the official purchase guide.

If you cannot exchange it before arriving at the airport, you must also set aside the cost of a regular airport ticket.

Is there a bus from the airport to Sendai Station?

As of the confirmation date, there are no direct buses to Sendai Station or the city centre in the airport's official route list. This does not mean that other regional and seasonal routes in the official list are bound for Sendai Station. When going to your accommodation in the city, compare the airport train and taxi. Please check the airport list and operator table below for new routes and temporary services.

Last airport train and onward city/Matsushima connections

Airport → Sendai

First 05:31→05:55; last 23:23→23:51, in the 14 March 2026 timetable, common to weekdays/holidays. These are airport-origin times, not the reverse journey.

Subway and Matsushima last trains

The checked city timetable lists Sendai’s last Namboku and Tozai trains at 23:59 on weekdays, Saturdays and holidays. Eight minutes after final airport-train arrival is not a guaranteed JR-platform→gates→subway-concourse→B4 connection.

The checked October 2026 weekday/weekend Senseki timetable’s final Matsushima-Kaigan call is Sendai 22:52→Matsushima-Kaigan 23:30. Later 23:15/23:39/00:02 services end at Higashi-Shiogama, without reaching Kaigan.

Airport 22:08→Sendai 22:34 leaves eighteen scheduled minutes to the Kaigan train, still subject to B2 movement, delays and hotel check-in. Airport 22:38→Sendai 23:03 arrives too late. A separate Tohoku Main Line 00:02 departure in the October table ends at Matsushima Station, whose final hotel route differs from Kaigan. Ask your hotel about taxi/confirmed collection and check-in before relying on it.

Use the time after immigration and baggage, not landing alone. Trains do not automatically wait for your flight. If missed, contact the official taxi rank/booked operator and your hotel.

Sendai Airport Taxi: Differentiate between regular rides and reserved fares

Arrival lobby on the 1st floor → Official taxi stand in front of the terminal → Present accommodation address, number of people, and luggage in Japanese → Entrance to accommodation

For ordinary rank taxis, check the meter fare for the vehicle. The reservation company's flat rate table is not applied as the fare for every rank taxi. Time and cost vary depending on road congestion, waiting for a ride, and location of accommodation. Ask before departure about payment methods, late-night surcharges, tolls, and luggage availability.

Confirmed fixed-rate reservation: Sendai Taxi Group

For qualifying airport↔central Sendai addresses, the booked ordinary-car fare is JPY 6,500 on ordinary roads or 9,000 using toll roads, excluding tolls. There is a 20% surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. Only addresses in the business table apply, so please reference the exact Japanese address of your property when making your reservation.

The same amount does not apply to all hotels in Sendai city.

Book by phone in advance. The fixed fare applies only between the eligible airport and city addresses; intermediate stops are not included. A change of route or cancellation at your request may make the fixed fare inapplicable. If your flight is delayed, inform the company of your reservation number, flight number, and changed arrival time, and check with the company about waiting, additional fees, cancellation, and meeting location.

Ask the operator how long it will wait for a delayed flight, and whether extra waiting or cancellation charges apply.

If you are travelling alone late at night with large luggage, save the entrance/contact information of your accommodation and the walking route from the selected exit. If long walks and transfers are burdensome, you can compare taxis that go to the front of your accommodation.

Even if you are staying near the airport, you should check the actual available rooms, check-in deadlines, and transportation methods from the airport to your accommodation.

Official tickets and taxi reservations

Buy an ordinary airport-railway ticket at the station machine, or check supported IC payment with the operator. A private pickup is a different service from a rail ticket or the taxi company’s fixed-fare airport service.

For a booked vehicle, confirm Sendai Airport (SDJ) → your hotel address, the Japanese travel date, flight number, passengers and suitcases. The return journey to the airport is a separate direction. Get the meeting point, flight-delay waiting limit, cancellation deadline and final fare from the operator. Availability, free cancellation and unlimited waiting are not guaranteed.

If there are strong winds, heavy snow, or flight delays

Check notices from the airport, airline, Airport Railway, JR, and city subway. Weather alone cannot determine whether individual flights or all trains will operate. For reservation pickup and rental car, you must notify the reservation sales office and the actual company of the delay and check the acceptance deadline, change, and cancellation conditions.

Sendai Airport transport FAQ

How do I get from Sendai Airport to Sendai Station?

From 1F arrivals, go to 2F and cross the connecting passage to Sendai Airport Station. Buy a ticket or use a charged IC card, then take a Sendai-bound local train. Adult one-way fare is JPY 680 paper/672 IC; about 25 minutes on board. Arrival formalities, walking and waiting are additional.

Do I need to change at Natori?

No on the current scheduled Sendai-bound departures. The airport line joins JR at Natori but trains run through. Check the day’s destination display and disruption notices.

Are rapid trains available?

The timetable effective 14 March 2026 does not list airport-origin rapid services. Locals call at Mitazono, Morisekinoshita, Natori, Minami-Sendai, Taishido and Nagamachi before Sendai. Use the current arrival time, not older rapid-train timings.

Can I use IC or a rail pass?

Supported cards include Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and icsca; PiTaPa needs stored balance. The current JR EAST PASS lists Sendai Airport Transit, but not every JR pass includes it. Check the exact product, validity and completed exchange. City-subway fares are separate.

How do I reach a city-centre hotel from Sendai?

Use the west exit for western hotels or the 2F east–west public passage for eastern hotels. For Ichibancho, take the Tozai subway towards Yagiyama Zoological Park one stop to Aoba-dori Ichibancho. North 1 serves the northern shopping area; South 1 Sun Mall. JR Aoba-dori is a separate station.

How do I reach Matsushima?

Change at Sendai to a Senseki train calling at Matsushima-Kaigan, about forty minutes by train. Tohoku Main Line Matsushima Station is separate and adds about twenty minutes walking to the coastal sightseeing area. Include Sendai platform movement, waiting and the final walk; the onward fare is extra.

What if I arrive late or miss the last train?

The current last airport train is 23:23→Sendai 23:51. Only eight minutes remain to the checked 23:59 subway departures, so the change is not guaranteed. The 22:52 Senseki service to Matsushima-Kaigan has already left. Judge after entry/baggage procedures; if missed, ask the official taxi/booked operator and hotel.
