How to get to downtown Sendai from Sendai Airport

For a hotel near Sendai Station, take the airport train and choose the east or west exit for your address. For Aoba-dori or Ichibancho, compare the walk with a one-stop subway ride. For Matsushima, plan the train change at Sendai and check your hotel's latest check-in time.

From Sendai Airport · 仙台空港(SDJ) to Sendai Station · 仙台駅, you can take the Sendai-bound train according to the current timetable without transferring. The prices below are in Yen for one way for adults, and the times are local Japanese time.

Official sources reviewed . Railroad fares and timetables are based on revisions on March 14, 2026, and notices of service changes on the same day have priority.

From first-floor arrivals to the second-floor station

Sendai Airport Station · 仙台空港駅

International arrivals

  1. Complete immigration, baggage collection and customs, then enter the first-floor international arrivals lobby.
  2. Follow the official map toward the bank, passing the fountain in Center Plaza.
  3. Take the escalator ahead on the left to the second floor, then cross the connecting passage to the station.
  4. Buy a Sendai ticket at the machine or enter with a supported IC card with enough balance.
  5. Check the departure platform and 仙台 / Sendai destination before boarding.

Domestic arrivals

  1. Collect your bags and enter the first-floor domestic arrivals lobby.
  2. Walk toward the convenience store, turn right in front of it and take the escalator to the second floor.
  3. Cross the connecting passage, buy a ticket or pass the gates, then find the Sendai-bound platform.

For large bags or step-free access, check the elevator route on the airport floor map. The station gates, waiting room and platform are on the second floor.

The airport's roughly two-minute station walk starts at the second-floor connecting passage. It excludes the trip up from first-floor arrivals, elevator waits and ticket purchase. The separate three-minute estimate from domestic departures starts in a different second-floor area.

Stay on the Sendai-bound train at Natori

Airport station → Mitazono · 美田園 → Morisekinoshita · 杜せきのした → Natori · 名取 → Minami-Sendai · 南仙台 → Taishido · 太子堂 → Nagamachi · 長町 → Sendai Station

The Sendai Airport Line joins the JR Tohoku Main Line at Natori Station · 名取駅. All airport-origin services in the current timetable continue to Sendai, without a Natori transfer. Check the day's destination display in case of disruption or temporary changes.

Use the current local-train times, not an old rapid estimate

The timetable effective March 14, 2026 lists local trains stopping at all the stations above, not airport-origin rapid services. The operator gives about 25 minutes as a standard ride; individual departures take about 24–31 minutes. Examples are 05:31 → 05:55, 07:21 → 07:52 and the last train, 23:23 → 23:51.

A paper ticket to Sendai costs ¥680 for adults or ¥340 for children; IC fares are ¥672 and ¥335. Child fares apply from age six up to, but not including, age 12. A six-year-old who has not started elementary school is treated as a young child. Up to two young children travel free with each accompanying adult; a child ticket is required for a third.

On the GSI basemap, blue solid lines show airport-rail/JR reference geography, orange solid lines show subway geography and green dashed arrows show final connections. Rail geometry comes from MLIT's N02-2025 data; it does not establish same-day train service. Dashed lines are not exact walking paths or indoor passages. Exit pins mark approximate street-level areas. Use the official station maps and walking links for actual exits and accessible routes.

Sendai Station East/West Exit and final transfer

Hotels west of the station and Aoba-dori

Airport train platform → second-floor central JR gates → west exit and pedestrian deck → hotel

Aoba-dori Avenue · 青葉通 is a street leading to the west of the station. Check the property's address and actual walking route at the west exit. Choose the stairs or elevator that leads to your hotel's side of the street.

West Exit → Aoba-dori Station walking route ↗

Accommodation east of the station

Airport train platform → second-floor gates → east–west public passage → east exit → hotel

If the address of your accommodation is east of the station, do not go to the west shopping street first, but follow the ‘東口’ sign. The east-west free passage on the second floor connects both sides. If you check which road the main entrance to your accommodation is on, you can reduce the need to drag your suitcase around the building.

East exit → East plaza walking route ↗

Airport trains usually arrive at platforms 3 or 4, but check the actual platform. Check the arrival platforms, ticket gates, and exits on the JR official floor map.

Ichibancho hotels: walk or take one Tozai Line stop

For Ichibancho · 一番町, enter Sendai Subway Station · 地下鉄仙台駅 and take the Tozai Line toward Yagiyama Zoological Park (八木山動物公園駅). Get off one stop later at Aoba-dori Ichibancho Station · 青葉通一番町駅. The ride takes approximately 2 minutes, with an additional 210 yen for adults, for a total of 890 yen based on a paper airport ticket and a total of 882 yen based on the airport IC. Add time to walk from JR to the subway, pass through the gates and wait for a train.

At Sendai Subway Station, go from the B1 concourse to the B4 Tozai Line platforms. The reviewed notices list the Central 2 entrance elevator as out of service and North 5 as closed. Check the current station map before choosing an entrance with luggage. In Aoba-dori Ichibancho, North 1 Exit is towards the northern shopping street, North 2 is towards Fujisaki · 藤崎 Department Store, and South 1 is towards Sun Mall Ichibancho · サンモール一番町.

Take the exit on the side of your accommodation.

JR Aoba-dori Station · あおば通駅 is a Senseki Line station. It is not the same station as Sendai Subway Station or Aoba-dori Ichibancho Station, and the Airport Railroad does not reach Aoba-dori Station.

External walking directions are based on the area around the station and exit. Exit names can be displayed for the entire station location, so please check the official station map above for stairs/elevators and North 1 and South 1 exits.

Matsushima: change at Sendai for Matsushima-Kaigan

For the waterfront sightseeing area in Matsushima · 松島, use Matsushima-Kaigan Station · 松島海岸駅. Take the airport train to Sendai, change to a JR Senseki Line train stopping at Matsushima-Kaigan, then walk to the waterfront.

The Senseki Line uses platforms 9 and 10 on basement level 2. The official timetable lists the last Matsushima-Kaigan service from platform 10. The tourism association gives about 40 minutes for the Sendai–Matsushima-Kaigan train ride. Check that an Ishinomaki-bound (石巻) or other selected train actually stops there; some services terminate earlier.

Matsushima Station · 松島駅 is a different station on the Tohoku Main Line. Its ride from Sendai is about 25 minutes, followed by about 20 minutes on foot to the sightseeing center. Do not assume a Senseki-Tohoku Line service stops at Matsushima-Kaigan because of its name. Choose the station for your hotel's address.

The onward fare depends on the route, ticket or pass and is not included in the ¥680 airport-to-Sendai fare. For a through ticket, check the full route at the ticket machine or with station staff.

IC cards, baggage and rail-pass coverage

Sendai Airport Transit accepts 11 IC card types, including Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and icsca. PiTaPa requires a prepaid balance here; its postpaid service is not accepted.

The operator does not sell new Suica cards at its stations. Ticket machines accept cash and supported IC cards, not credit cards. Top up an IC card with cash.

Use a luggage rack or designated luggage space, keep your bags under your control and leave seats free for passengers. JR's general allowance is two bags, each no more than 250 cm in combined dimensions, 2 m long and 30 kg. Ask the operators along your route about oversized bags or sports equipment.

In times of congestion, loading and carrying may be restricted, and reservations for luggage space or seating are not guaranteed.

Check whether your exact rail pass covers the airport line

The current JR EAST PASS includes the Sendai Airport Transit Line, but not Sendai's city subway. The five- and 10-day versions run for consecutive days from your selected start date. Compare coverage against your whole itinerary, not just the airport ride. For a pass you already bought, check its exact name, start date, eligibility and collection requirements.

Older Tohoku-area products have different prices and purchase conditions.

A booking confirmation is not a ticket: collect or exchange your pass before entering the gates. Bring your original non-Japanese passport. The new JR EAST PASS is listed as an exception to the usual Temporary Visitor visa requirement; check the current eligibility rules for the product you buy.

Validity dates generally cannot be changed after purchase or collection, except in specified cases. Collection, change and refund locations depend on where you bought the pass. Follow the official rules for your sales channel.

If you cannot collect a usable pass before taking the airport train, budget for a regular ticket.

Is there a bus from the airport to Sendai Station?

The airport's bus list, reviewed on the date shown below, has no direct service to Sendai Station or the city center. The regional and seasonal buses listed serve other destinations. For central Sendai, compare the airport train with a taxi; check the official list for any new or temporary services.

Current bus destination, operator, and bus stop ↗

Check the last airport train and onward connection separately

Departures from the airport

First train: 05:31 → Sendai 05:55. Last train: 23:23 → Sendai 23:51. The timetable effective March 14, 2026 does not separate weekdays and holidays. These are airport-origin times, not Sendai-to-airport departures.

Can you reach the last subway or Matsushima train?

The reviewed city timetable lists the last departures from Sendai at 23:59 in both directions on the Namboku and Tozai lines, on weekdays, Saturdays and holidays. A 23:51 airport-train arrival leaves only eight minutes to reach the subway. That includes leaving the JR platform, passing the gates, reaching the subway concourse, paying and going down to the platform. The connection is not guaranteed.

The October 2026 JR timetable lists the last Senseki Line train reaching Matsushima-Kaigan as Sendai 22:52 → Matsushima-Kaigan 23:30, on weekdays, Saturdays and holidays. Later departures at 23:15, 23:39 and 00:02 terminate at Higashi-Shiogama Station · 東塩釜駅 instead.

Airport 22:08 → Sendai 22:34 leaves 18 minutes before that 22:52 connection. Allow for the walk to the underground platform, delays and your hotel's check-in deadline. Airport 22:38 → Sendai 23:03 is too late for it.

The Tohoku Main Line route to Matsushima Station is separate. The October timetable has a 00:02 Sendai departure terminating at Matsushima, but the walk or taxi trip to a waterfront hotel differs from Matsushima-Kaigan. Ask your hotel about its check-in deadline and any station pickup before choosing a late connection.

Scheduled landing time is not enough to establish a connection. Add immigration and baggage collection, then check your actual arrival at the station. Trains are not assumed to wait for delayed flights. If the connection is no longer possible, ask about an official airport taxi and confirm late check-in.

Sendai Airport Taxi: Distinguish between regular rides and reserved fares

1st floor arrival lobby → Official taxi stand in front of the terminal → Present accommodation Japanese address, number of people, and luggage → Accommodation entrance

For taxis at the airport taxi stand, check the meter fare for the vehicle. The reservation company's flat rate table is not applied as the common fare for the airport taxi stand. Time and cost vary depending on road congestion, waiting for a ride, and accommodation location. Please inquire before departure about payment methods, late-night surcharges, tolls, and suitcase loading.

Confirmed fixed-rate booking: Sendai Taxi Group

For eligible addresses between the airport and central Sendai, Sendai Taxi Group quotes ¥6,500 for an ordinary car using local roads, or ¥9,000 using toll roads, with tolls charged separately. There is a 20% surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. Only addresses within the operator's listed areas qualify. Provide your hotel's exact Japanese address when booking.

The same amount does not apply to all hotels in Sendai city.

Book by phone in advance. Intermediate stops are not allowed, and passenger-requested route changes or cancellations may invalidate the flat fare. If your flight is delayed, give the operator your booking number, flight number and revised arrival time. Confirm the pickup point, waiting allowance, additional charges and cancellation rules.

Do not assume that delay-related waiting is free.

If you are traveling alone late at night with large luggage, save the entrance/contact information of your accommodation and the walking route from the selected exit. If long walks and transfers are burdensome, you can compare taxis that go to the front of your accommodation.

Even if you are staying near the airport, you should check the actual available rooms, check-in deadlines, and transportation options from the airport to your accommodation.

Official tickets and reservations

Ordinary airport railway tickets are sold at the airport station. Reserved flat-rate taxis require a booking with the participating operator. Give the operator your flight, destination, passenger count and luggage details, and check delay, waiting and cancellation conditions.

These are official operator links, not affiliate links. Fares in this guide and online offers may have different conditions. Confirm direction, date, exchange, reservation and refund rules before paying.

If there are strong winds, heavy snow, or flight delays

Check notices from the airport, airline, Airport Railroad, JR, and city subway. Weather alone cannot determine whether individual flights or all trains will operate. For a reserved pickup or rental car, notify both your booking provider and the operator of the delay. Confirm pickup deadlines and the change or cancellation rules.

Sendai Airport transfer FAQ

How do I get from Sendai Airport to Sendai Station?

Go from first-floor arrivals to the second-floor connecting passage and Sendai Airport Station. Buy a ticket or enter with a supported, topped-up IC card, then board a Sendai-bound local train. Adult fares are ¥680 with a paper ticket or ¥672 with IC. The standard ride is about 25 minutes; arrival formalities, the station walk, waiting and hotel access are additional.

Do I need to change at Natori?

No. Airport-origin trains in the current timetable continue through Natori to Sendai. A change of line or operator does not itself require changing trains. Check the destination display for any same-day operating changes.

Should I use a local or rapid train?

The timetable effective March 14, 2026 does not list airport-origin rapid services. Local trains serve the airport, Mitazono, Morisekinoshita, Natori, Minami-Sendai, Taishido, Nagamachi and Sendai. Use the current service's arrival time, typically about 25 minutes, rather than an older rapid-train estimate.

Can I use an IC card or rail pass?

Supported cards include Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and icsca. PiTaPa requires a stored balance rather than postpaid use. The current JR EAST PASS includes the Sendai Airport Transit Line, but not every JR pass does. Check the exact product, valid dates and whether it has been exchanged. City subway fares are separate.

Which exit should I use for a city-center hotel?

Use Sendai's west exit for a west-side hotel, or the public east–west passage to reach the east exit. For Ichibancho, compare walking with one Tozai Line stop toward Yagiyama Zoological Park to Aoba-dori Ichibancho. North 1 serves the northern shopping area and South 1 serves Sun Mall Ichibancho. JR Aoba-dori is a separate station.

How do I get to Matsushima?

Take the airport train to Sendai, then a JR Senseki Line service stopping at Matsushima-Kaigan, about 40 minutes by train from Sendai. It is the station for waterfront sightseeing. Matsushima Station on the Tohoku Main Line is separate, with about a 20-minute walk to the sightseeing center. Add the Sendai transfer, wait and final walk.

What if I miss the last train or onward connection?

The timetable effective March 14, 2026 lists airport 23:23 → Sendai 23:51 as the last train. The last subway at 23:59 leaves only eight minutes for a transfer, so it is not guaranteed. The last Sendai train reaching Matsushima-Kaigan leaves at 22:52, earlier than this airport arrival. Plan from the time you finish arrival formalities; ask about an official taxi and confirm hotel check-in if the connection is no longer possible.
