History and local traditions

The tradition is said to have taken shape between the late Heian and Kamakura periods. Villages continue their own overnight offerings and dance sequences.

Plan your visit

Choose a village only after checking its date, venue and visitor guidance. Do not rely on the central shrine’s regular visitor-show schedule for an overnight village rite.
