Stay in Yufuin or visit nearby cities from Beppu?
After hells and ropeway, stay one night in Yufuin; alternatively, stay four Beppu nights with separate days for Usuki Stone Buddhas and Usa Jingu. Usuki uses a reserved sightseeing taxi, Usa a station bus and shrine approach. Both areas’ JR and local transport are outside course subtotals.
Choose a 4 nights, 5 days itinerary
Three nights in Beppu, then one in Yufuin
Visit hells and the ropeway while staying in Beppu, then move to Yufuin on day four. This avoids rushing mountain views and airport travel together on the final day.

Choose this to add Stone Buddhas and shrine history to hot-spring attractions. Stay four nights at the same Beppu Station-area hotel, visiting Usuki and Usa on separate days. No hotel move to Yufuin is included.

Day 1: airport → five Kannawa hells → Beppu hotel
Visit Kannawa’s five hells on day one, then return to the same Beppu hotel.
- Oita Airport and Beppu accommodation → Route 5 → Umi Jigoku-mae
Alight at Kitahama from the airport, leave bags at your hotel and go to Beppu Station west stand 3. Take APU-bound route 5 to Umi Jigoku-mae for Kannawa’s five nearby hells. Choose the return bus first in the official weekday and weekend timetables.

- Kannawa facility entrances → Five hells and return bus preparation
Finish viewing and walks between entrances before 17:00 closing. Visit fewer hells after a late arrival.
- Return to Beppu Station → Dinner → same hotel
Return on Beppu Station westbound route 5 from Umi Jigoku-mae. Eat near the station and rest at your hotel. The 2,400-yen combined ticket, 780-yen route 5 return and 1,600-yen airport bus give a verified 4,780-yen subtotal.
Leave bags at your hotel after arriving at Kitahama, then go to the Kannawa-bound stand on Beppu Station’s west side. Allow walks between facilities and back to the return stop. Reduce viewing as needed to catch your chosen bus after leaving the facilities.
Day 2: Chinoike and Tatsumaki → Beppu accommodation
Visit Chinoike and Tatsumaki, then return to your hotel. This is the day after buying the combined ticket, within its validity.
- Beppu accommodation and east stand 5 → Route 26 and Chinoike Jigoku-mae
Buy a 1,100-yen Kamenoi Bus Mini One-Day Pass for today. Take route 26 from Beppu Station east stand 5 to Chinoike Jigoku-mae, then return on outer-loop route 16 towards Beppu Station. Return route 26 heads towards Kannawa; it is not the same direction. Check official weekday and weekend timetables, entrance walks and eruption waits.

- Chinoike Jigoku-mae → Two remaining hells
Check outward and return services for your travel day and visit Chinoike and Tatsumaki. Yesterday’s combined ticket allows one visit to each facility through today. Allow eruption waits at Tatsumaki and walks from the stop separately.
- Chinoike Jigoku-mae and Beppu Station → Route 16 return, lunch and Beppu hotel
Return to the station for lunch and rest at your hotel. Use today’s Mini One-Day Pass for the return; hells admission is separate. Day-one route 5 uses ordinary fares, so today’s pass is not applied to yesterday.
Go from east stand 5 on route 26 and distinguish route 16’s loop direction on return. Today’s 1,100-yen Mini One-Day Pass is included. Allow entrance walks and eruption waits. Use yesterday’s combined ticket only for unvisited facilities, then return to your Beppu hotel. You do not travel to the airport today.
Day 3: ropeway → Beppu hotel
After the ropeway, rest at your Beppu hotel. You stay at the same hotel and do not travel to the airport today.
- Beppu Station west stand 1 → Route 36 and ropeway stop
From Beppu Station west stand 1, take route 36 stopping at Beppu Ropeway. Choose outward and return services in official weekday and weekend timetables. Some services do not stop at the ropeway; check the stop mark. Omit the visit after a late arrival or during suspension.
- Ropeway stop → Upper mountain viewing → Beppu-bound bus
Walk from the stop to the lower station, buy a return ticket and ascend. Allow descent waits and stop access before returning. Pay 1,000 yen for return buses and 1,800 yen for the ropeway separately. Descend and take Beppu Station westbound route 36 from the ropeway stop.

Choose outward and return route 36 services from the station’s west side that actually stop at the ropeway. The facility is about one minute from the stop; tickets, boarding and descent waits need extra time. If wind or maintenance suspends service, or arrival is late, omit the visit and rest in Beppu.
Day 4: move to Yufuin and stay overnight
Move from Beppu to Yufuin, walk the hot-spring town and stay one night.
- Beppu accommodation → Checkout → Beppu Station west stand 1

- Yufuin accommodation → Meal, walk and hotel return around bag storage
If your hotel can store bags, walk from the station towards Yunotsubo Street for lunch and shops. If storage is unavailable or arrival is late, check in first and shorten the walk. Return for hotel dinner. Lake Kinrin is tomorrow, so add neither a Beppu return nor lake viewing today.
Confirm hotel access, shuttles and bag storage with your booked accommodation. Plan travel around check-in and meals. Choose one actual standard route 36 or temporary direct service; do not return to Beppu today.
Day 5: Lake Kinrin → airport
Take the airport bus from Yufuin Station bus centre today. Walk Lake Kinrin only if time remains.
- Yufuin accommodation → Lake Kinrin walk → station
After checkout, walk from Yunotsubo Street to Lake Kinrin if bags can be stored and time remains. The official map gives about 25 minutes station-to-lake; allow photos, rests and hotel access beyond roughly 50 minutes of return walking.

Return from Lake Kinrin to collect hotel bags, then go to Yufuin Station bus centre. Buses do not guarantee flight connections; if check-in time is short, reduce the walk or take an earlier bus. If you need an earlier airport arrival, reconsider the previous night’s accommodation too.
Included items: The subtotal includes the 2,400-yen hells combined ticket, 780 yen for route 5 return buses, 1,800 yen for return ropeway travel, 1,000 yen for route 36 ropeway buses both ways, 1,100 yen from Beppu to Yufuin, 1,600 yen from the airport to Kitahama and 2,000 yen from Yufuin to the airport. It also includes the day-two 1,100-yen Kamenoi Bus Mini One-Day Pass for route 26 outward and route 16 return.
Costs outside the subtotal: Hotels, meals, flights, bathing, private facilities, bag storage and extra travel between hotels, Kitahama, stations and bus centres cost extra.
This subtotal adds the hells combined ticket and listed transport and admission. Day two’s 1,100-yen Mini One-Day Pass is included in 11,780 yen. It cannot be reused on another date and does not replace hells admission. Hotels, meals, flights and bathing are extra. Omitting the ropeway removes its 1,000-yen return buses and 1,800-yen return ticket. The Yufuin hotel-move day includes only route 36’s 1,100-yen single.

The pass covers JR trains within eligible sections, excluding airport buses, Kamenoi buses, ropeway and hells admission. Compare ordinary tickets for covered Hakata–Beppu, Hakata–Yufuin and Beppu–Usa journeys. Oita–Usuki is outside Northern Kyushu coverage. Both outward and return dates must fit consecutive three- or five-day validity. Eligibility requires a non-Japanese passport, residence outside Japan and entry for tourism as a Temporary Visitor. Check the passport entry stamp or sticker and carry your passport while using the pass. If using automated immigration gates, ask airport staff for the stamp or sticker.
