Sapporo-Furano Area Pass: routes, collection and seat reservations

Sapporo-Furano Area Pass

The Sapporo-Furano Area Pass covers specified JR routes linking New Chitose Airport (新千歳空港), Sapporo (札幌), Otaru (小樽), Furano (富良野), Biei (美瑛) and Asahikawa (旭川) for four consecutive days. Tomamu (トマム) and buses to attractions are not included.

When is this pass useful?

Compare it if your train journeys between Sapporo, Furano, Biei and Asahikawa fall within four consecutive days. Add bus or taxi fares from the stations in Furano and Biei to the attractions you will visit.

Who can use it?

JR Hokkaido accepts holders of valid passports issued by countries other than Japan. Present your original passport when exchanging or buying the pass; a copy or residence card is not accepted. Carry the passport while travelling. A travel agency may also have separate sales conditions for its own product.

Official prices and child fares

These are JR’s official prices in Japanese yen. Advance prices apply to Exchange Orders bought from overseas travel agencies and purchases through JR-EAST Train Reservation; station prices apply at designated JR Hokkaido stations. Reseller prices are separate. Child prices apply to ages 6–11.

Checked:

Validity and start date

The pass is valid for four consecutive days from your chosen start date. You cannot choose separate travel days. Once the actual pass is issued, its start date and type cannot be changed.

Exchange Order or boarding ticket?

An electronic or paper Exchange Order from a travel agency must be exchanged for the actual pass before travel. A paper Exchange Order must be exchanged within three months of issue; an electronic Exchange Order within 90 days. Check that the name matches your passport exactly.

Which routes are covered?

Specified JR routes include Otaru–Sapporo–New Chitose Airport, Takikawa (滝川)–Asahikawa–Biei–Furano and Takikawa–Furano. Tomamu is excluded. An attraction being in Furano or Biei does not mean its connecting bus is covered.

Bus and other local transport

JR Hokkaido buses, Sapporo Subway and trams are not included. Check separate transport from the station to lavender farms or other attractions.

Where do I collect the pass?

Exchange or buy this pass only at the designated counters at New Chitose Airport, Sapporo and Asahikawa stations. Furano Station is not listed as an exchange point for this pass.

Reserving seats

All JR Hokkaido limited express trains have reserved seating only. Obtain an Ordinary Car reserved-seat ticket before boarding: seats cannot be assigned on the train. After collecting the pass, reserve at a station counter or reserved-seat ticket machine. Green Car travel requires both the Green Car charge and the limited express charge separately.

What if the train is full?

If a covered limited express is full, the official guidance permits standing in Ordinary Cars on the listed Hokuto, Suzuran, Kamui, Lilac, Soya, Sarobetsu, Okhotsk, Ozora, Tokachi and Furano Lavender Express services within the pass area. If you sit in a vacant seat, give it up when its reserved passenger arrives. Some seasonal trains cannot be used without a seat reservation.

Cancellation and refunds

Before exchange, request cancellation from the travel agency that sold your Exchange Order, under that seller’s fees and conditions. After the actual pass has been issued, its start date and type cannot be changed. Lost or stolen passes are not reissued. Ask the official purchase or exchange counter about refunds after exchange.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Choose your stations and consecutive travel dates, then check the coverage. You cannot buy or use the same type of pass with overlapping validity periods.

  2. Take the travel agency’s Exchange Order and the original passports of every traveller to a designated counter handling this pass. Confirm the start date and collect the actual pass.

  3. For a limited express, reserve the train, carriage and seat at a station counter or reserved-seat machine after collecting the pass. If you need to change trains after the seat ticket has been issued, ask at a counter.

  4. Insert only the actual pass into the automatic gate, then retrieve it. The reserved-seat ticket does not open the gate. An Exchange Order QR code is not the ticket used for boarding.

  5. Check your reserved train, carriage and seat before boarding. Do not bend the pass or keep it near magnetic objects such as a smartphone.

Questions about this pass

Can I board with the QR code on my electronic Exchange Order?

No. Collect the actual pass at a designated counter first. Insert only the pass into the automatic gate; the reserved-seat ticket is not a gate ticket.

Are there non-reserved seats on limited express trains?

All JR Hokkaido limited express trains are reserved-seat services. Obtain your seat ticket before boarding. Standing when a train is full is restricted to the listed services and Ordinary Cars in the official guidance.

Can I change the start date after collecting the pass?

No. The start date and pass type cannot be changed once the actual pass has been issued. Check your dates during exchange.

Can I exchange a pass at a ticket machine on 6 October 2026?

As of this check, exchange is at designated counters. Passport-reader machine services are scheduled to start on 20 October 2026, with restrictions on supported sellers and Exchange Order issue dates. Do not assume every Trip.com QR Exchange Order qualifies.

Does it include Tomamu and buses to attractions in Biei?

Tomamu is excluded and buses to attractions are not included. Separate the covered JR journey in Furano or Biei from onward transport after leaving the station.
