Kagoshima Airport to Kagoshima-Chuo and Tenmonkan

For Shinkansen or a hotel near Kagoshima-Chuo, take the city bus to Chuo Terminal and walk across to the station. For a Tenmonkan hotel, get off at Tenmonkan. Both cost ¥1,500 from airport bay 8. Kagoshima Station and the Sakurajima Ferry require a further city walk or tram ride; they are not the same destination as Chuo.

Arrivals → ticket → domestic-side bus bay 8

  1. Finish arrivals on the first floor. Domestic and international arrivals are on the first floor of their respective buildings. After international immigration, baggage claim and customs, follow the connecting route toward the domestic building. Bay 8 is outside the domestic building, not the international building. The floor plan places the bus information desk near domestic exit 3.
  2. Prepare the ¥1,500 city-bound fare. Use an airport bus-ticket machine. Card-enabled machines list Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express and Diners; some machines are cash-only. Cash payment is also available when boarding. Carry ¥1,000 bills and coins; ¥2,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000 bills cannot be changed on board.
  3. At bay 8, confirm “鹿児島市内” and your stop. The Airport Shuttle Bus · 空港連絡バス is jointly operated by Nangoku Kotsu · 南国交通 and Kagoshima Kotsu · 鹿児島交通. Direct services call at Chuo, then Tenmonkan, then either City Hall or the high-speed boat terminal. Services via Yoshino reach Tenmonkan before Chuo. Show the driver your destination.
  4. Stow bags, board at the front and pay. Put tickets or cash in the fare box, or tap a supported local IC card. Nangoku’s supported bank-card contactless payment requires one tap when boarding, not another when leaving. Check the actual vehicle’s brands and reader because this is a jointly operated route.
  5. Retrieve your bags at the correct stop. Chuo, Tenmonkan and City Hall are different locations. For a hotel, enter its actual address in walking directions. For Shinkansen, continue to the JR gates at Kagoshima-Chuo.

Regular seats are unreserved, and a full bus may require waiting for the next departure. For wheelchair space, call 0995-58-2341 by the previous day to confirm the specific vehicle and departure. The fleet does not guarantee identical luggage space on every service.

The listed transit cards are Rapica and Iwasaki IC, not nationwide Suica/ICOCA. Carry a ticket or cash rather than relying only on Suica. Keep valuables and fragile items with you. No common size or quantity guarantee for this airport route was confirmed; ask about oversized bags, strollers or groups.

Kagoshima-Chuo: from the bus terminal to JR

Kagoshima Chuo Terminal Building · 鹿児島中央ターミナルビル is a separate building across the street east of the JR station. Airport buses unload at first-floor bay 4. Do not confuse this with return-departure bay 1 or station east-side bay 21.

  1. Retrieve your bags at terminal bay 4 and follow “桜島口 / 鹿児島中央駅” toward JR’s east side.
  2. Use the underground passage or street crosswalk to the east station plaza. The building’s official guide gives a two-minute walk to the station, not to the train platform; add time for luggage and gates.
  3. Inside the station, follow “JR / 新幹線” to your booked train’s gates. The Kagoshima-Chuo-ekimae tram stop is separate in the plaza.
  4. For a west-side hotel, follow the station connection to “西口” and continue to the actual hotel entrance.

Tenmonkan: direct and Yoshino buses use different drop-offs

Look for “天文館.” Direct buses reach Tenmonkan after Chuo in about 46 minutes. Services via Yoshino reach Tenmonkan first, in about 50 minutes. The operator’s map marks separate drop-off locations; neither the tram stop nor a single shopping-district pin represents every bus stop.

  1. At airport bay 8, confirm that your bus stops at Tenmonkan and whether it is direct or via Yoshino. Prepare ¥1,500 or a supported payment method.
  2. Direct buses unload at map point 4; Yoshino buses use point 5. These are operator-map labels, not airport bay numbers. Follow the driver and street stop signs.
  3. Find your hotel’s actual entrance near the arcade, CenTerrace or the southern streets. Use crosswalks if it is on the other side of the road. Return airport-bus boarding points are not necessarily the same as arrival drop-offs.

Current Yoshino departures are airport 12:35 → Tenmonkan 13:25 → Chuo 13:30, and 16:20 → 17:10 → 17:15. They serve Kami-Kedana, Yoshino, Inaricho and Kinseicho rather than continuing like the direct City Hall or high-speed-terminal services.

Kagoshima Station: take a tram from Chuo

Kagoshima Station is a separate JR station northeast of Kagoshima-Chuo. For Shinkansen, use Chuo. A city-bound airport bus is not a direct bus to Kagoshima Station.

  1. Get off at Chuo Terminal and walk to the east station plaza.
  2. At Kagoshima-Chuo-ekimae · 鹿児島中央駅前, board tram route 2 toward “鹿児島駅前,” not Korimoto · 郡元.
  3. At the terminus, Kagoshima-ekimae · 鹿児島駅前, walk to the JR entrance or hotel. For the ferry, Suizokukan-guchi is two stops earlier.

Tram payment differs from airport-bus payment

Board through the middle door, press the stop button and leave through the front. The adult fare is ¥200 from August 1, 2026. Pay cash when leaving, exchanging money in advance rather than expecting change. With Rapica or a supported contactless bank card, tap both when boarding and leaving. City trams and buses do not accept nationwide transit IC cards such as Suica/SUGOCA, unlike the JR section below.

From Tenmonkan-dori · 天文館通, routes 1 and 2 both reach Kagoshima-ekimae in the correct direction. Carry your bags and keep doors and aisles clear. Tram waiting, riding and the final walk are extra to the airport-bus ride.

Tram route and dated schedules · Tram boarding and payment

Sakurajima Ferry: not the high-speed boat terminal

Your destination is Kagoshima Port Sakurajima Ferry Terminal · 鹿児島港桜島フェリーターミナル, at 本港新町4-1. The airport bus’s High-speed Boat Terminal · 高速船ターミナル is a different facility farther south.

City Hall bus stop → walk

At bay 8, choose a bus ending at City Hall · 市役所前. The direct ride is about 48 minutes, ¥1,500. The ferry’s official guide gives about 15 minutes on foot from City Hall. A Yoshino bus or high-speed-terminal bus should not be assumed to end here.

City Hall → ferry terminal

Chuo tram route 2 → Suizokukan-guchi

Take route 2 toward Kagoshima-ekimae and get off at Suizokukan-guchi · 水族館口. The tram costs an additional ¥200. Walk about 600 m to the terminal. From Kagoshima Station, the official walk is about seven minutes.

Tram stop → ferry terminal

Use the correct entrance for the second-floor boarding area

Follow crosswalks toward the aquarium and terminal. With luggage, use the official elevator route near the parking entrance and ramp, then take the elevator to the second-floor pedestrian boarding gate. The footbridge entrance and elevator entrance are different; do not simply follow the bridge stairs.

The regular crossing to Sakurajima Port · 桜島港 takes about 15 minutes, or around 20 in some sea conditions. Disembarking after docking takes another two or three minutes. Adult one-way fare is ¥250; child fare ¥130. Pay at Sakurajima Port in both directions: after disembarking on the outward trip, before boarding on the return. Carry exact cash or check the official alternative payment methods.

Sengan-en: JR or City View from Chuo

Sengan-en · 仙巌園 is served by Sengan-en Station · 仙巌園駅, which opened in March 2025. First take the airport bus to the city; there is no airport railway.

JR: about ten minutes, ¥240

  1. At Chuo, buy a ticket to Sengan-en or use a transit IC card supported on this JR section.
  2. Choose a Nippo Main Line · 日豊本線 local train that stops at Sengan-en, via Kagoshima Station. From Kagoshima, it is one stop. Confirm the platform and destination, such as Kokubu or Hayato, on the departure board.
  3. At Sengan-en Station, use the designated Route 10 crosswalk to the attraction entrance. The official map directs passengers toward that crossing, not across the road immediately outside the station.

The published Chuo fare is ¥240, about ten minutes, separate from the airport bus. JR supports cards including SUGOCA, Suica and PASMO under its own coverage rules, unlike city trams. Sengan-en Station has vending machines but no staffed ticket counter.

City View: about 49 minutes, ¥230

  1. Board Kagoshima City View · カゴシマシティビュー at east-plaza bay East 4 “東4.” This is not the airport-bus terminal’s bay 4.
  2. The sightseeing loop calls at Sengan-en (Iso Garden) · 仙巌園(磯庭園)前. The published ride is about 49 minutes, at ¥230.
  3. Follow the official access map’s blue walking arrows to the entrance and use designated crossings.

Board through the middle door and pay cash when leaving through the front. Confirm Rapica or other supported payment against the operator’s instructions and vehicle reader. Carry large bags yourself.

Sengan-en opens 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Plan the visit around admission, not the last train. The City View timetable currently linked by the city bureau is labeled April 1, 2020: Chuo departures 08:30–17:30 every 30 minutes, with the final Sengan-en stop at 18:19. Check current service notices before relying on it.

Last airport buses and onward city services

Airport departures: April 1, 2026 onward, until revised

  • Chuo / Tenmonkan / City Hall: last scheduled airport departure 21:30 → Chuo 22:08 → Tenmonkan 22:16 → City Hall 22:18. The table does not distinguish weekdays from weekends.
  • Via Yoshino: last departure 16:20 → Tenmonkan 17:10 → Chuo 17:15.
  • High-speed boat terminal: last departure 16:00 → Chuo 16:38 → Tenmonkan 16:46 → terminal 16:52. This is not an arrival at the Sakurajima Ferry terminal.

Starred services from 20:45 onward may have departure times adjusted to aircraft arrivals; the stated coverage extends to flights arriving at 22:10. That is not a fixed 22:10 bus departure or a promise to wait until all international passengers finish immigration. Confirm your actual connection at bay 8, allowing for baggage and arrivals procedures.

Check tram, JR and ferry departures separately

  • Tram route 2 toward Kagoshima-ekimae: last Chuo-ekimae departure 22:12 in the checked weekday, Saturday and Sunday/holiday tables. From Tenmonkan-dori: weekday 22:20, Saturday 22:19, Sunday/holiday 22:20. The last airport bus’s 22:08 Chuo arrival leaves only four minutes to retrieve bags, cross the road and board; this is not a guaranteed transfer. The Tenmonkan connection is similarly tight.
  • Sakurajima Ferry: from October 1, 2025, Kagoshima departures run 04:30–23:30 and Sakurajima returns 04:00–23:00 on weekdays and weekends/holidays. It is not a 24-hour service. A late outward sailing can reach the island after the last return has left.
  • Sakurajima Island View: departures are 09:30–16:30 at 30-minute intervals. A night ferry does not imply that a same-day sightseeing loop remains available.
  • JR to Sengan-en: the checked daily October 2026 last departure is Chuo 23:41 → Kagoshima 23:45 → Sengan-en 23:48. The last return is Sengan-en 00:00 → Chuo 00:07 the next day. These trains are not useful for attraction admission, which ends at 16:30.
  • Shinkansen: last trains depend on destination. Add terminal-to-JR walking and baggage time before comparing the actual booked train.

If the bus has ended

Use domestic-side taxi stand 5 or international-side stand 2. If no vehicle is waiting, contact a listed operator. Tell your hotel about late check-in and prepare the exact address and entrance. If city trams have ended, compare the final walk with a taxi, especially with luggage.

For weather or volcanic disruption, check airport/airline notices, Nangoku, Kagoshima Kotsu, city transport, JR and ferry notices separately. Weather alone does not establish cancellations. The existing Incheon–Kagoshima guide (Korean) covers that route, not a substituted US departure.

Taxis, reserved vehicles and rental cars

Official taxi stands and bookings

  1. Domestic arrivals use stand 5 outside the first floor; international arrivals use stand 2. Reserved vehicles use the meeting point given by the provider, not automatically either taxi stand.
  2. Show your hotel’s Japanese address and declare passengers and suitcases. Confirm payment and a total estimate including night surcharge, tolls and waiting.
  3. The airport gives about 40 minutes and 42 km to Chuo, but no verified current fare range. Request a quote rather than relying on an invented amount.

Listed booking contacts: Asahi Kotsu 0995-45-1111 · Arimura Taxi 0995-42-1101 · Daiichi Kotsu 0995-66-1000 · Nakamura Taxi 0995-43-3333. Give the flight number, arrival estimate and destination; confirm delay waiting, cancellations and vehicle capacity.

Rental pickup is at an off-airport office

Follow your booked company’s instructions or ask the first-floor general information desk to arrange the shuttle. Domestic-side bay 4 is the rental/parking shuttle area on the airport plan. You do not normally collect keys and drive straight out of the terminal.

Take the confirmed shuttle to the office, present valid driving documents, booking and payment, then check insurance, excess, fuel, pickup/return and late-flight conditions before accepting the car. Rental, parking and tolls are separate costs. Confirm the hotel’s parking entrance.

Official transportation usage and reservation information

Please check ticket and reservation conditions in the official information below. Airport buses, reserved vehicles, rental cars, and city rail tickets are used separately.

Sengan-en admission tickets and Sakurajima sightseeing tours are different from airport transfer tickets. You must also check the actual included sections and reserved seat conditions for the rail pass, and the airport bus is not automatically included.

Kagoshima Airport FAQ

How do I get to Kagoshima-Chuo Station?

From airport domestic-side bay 8, take a city-bound Airport Shuttle Bus jointly operated by Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu. The adult fare is ¥1,500; a direct ride takes about 38 minutes. Get off at Chuo Terminal first-floor bay 4 and walk to the JR station’s east entrance.

Are Kagoshima-Chuo and Kagoshima Station the same?

No. Shinkansen uses Kagoshima-Chuo. Kagoshima Station is farther northeast, closer to the ferry area. From Chuo, take tram route 2 toward 鹿児島駅前 and then walk to the JR entrance. The city-bound airport bus is not a direct bus to Kagoshima Station.

Where should I get off for Tenmonkan?

Use the Tenmonkan stop, but confirm direct or via Yoshino. Direct services reach it after Chuo; Yoshino services reach it first and use a different drop-off. Follow the operator map and your hotel’s actual entrance address.

Do I need to reserve the airport bus?

Regular seats are unreserved, and a full bus may require waiting for the next departure. For wheelchair space, contact Nangoku at 0995-58-2341 by the previous day to confirm the specific vehicle. Ordinary boarding does not reserve a seat.

How do I pay the airport bus fare?

Buy a machine ticket or pay when boarding with cash or a method supported by the vehicle. Nangoku’s contactless bank-card system uses one tap when boarding. Rapica and Iwasaki IC are local cards, not Suica/ICOCA; carry a ticket or backup cash rather than relying only on Suica.

Can I take a large suitcase?

The operator describes luggage compartments, but no common size or quantity guarantee for every airport service was confirmed. Keep valuables and fragile items with you and ask about oversized luggage, strollers or groups before travel.

How do I reach the Sakurajima Ferry terminal?

Use a City Hall-bound airport bus and walk about 15 minutes to Kagoshima Port Sakurajima Ferry Terminal at 本港新町4-1. Alternatively, take tram route 2 from Chuo to Suizokukan-guchi and walk about 600 m. The high-speed boat terminal is a different facility. Pedestrian ferry boarding is on the second floor.

How do I get to Sengan-en?

From Chuo, take a Nippo Main Line local train stopping at Sengan-en Station: about ten minutes, an additional ¥240. Use the designated Route 10 crosswalk to the entrance. City View is a separate option from station east-plaza bay East 4: about 49 minutes, ¥230. This is not the airport-bus terminal’s bay 4.

What if my flight arrives late?

The timetable effective April 1, 2026 until revised lists the last scheduled airport departure at 21:30 → Chuo 22:08 → Tenmonkan 22:16 → City Hall 22:18. Starred services may adjust to aircraft arrival, with stated coverage up to a 22:10 flight arrival; this is not unlimited waiting for international immigration. Confirm with bay 8 staff. If buses have ended, use domestic taxi stand 5, international stand 2, or a confirmed provider.

Where do I check disruptions?

Check airport and airline flight notices, Nangoku/Kagoshima Kotsu buses, city trams/buses, JR Kyushu and Sakurajima Ferry separately. Weather or volcanic activity alone does not establish a cancellation. Ferry availability does not mean island sightseeing buses or attractions remain open.
