Stay one night in Matsue for a day each at the castle keep and lakeside art museum, or in Izumo for separate shrine and beach days. On the Matsue route's second day, walk between the station and museum. Reduce sightseeing if you arrive late or depart early on the final day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I follow the same route after an afternoon arrival?

Reduce sightseeing to fit your available time. Matsue Castle's keep admits visitors until 4:30 p.m. in October–March, and the area behind Izumo Taisha's main sanctuary closes at 4:30 p.m. Choose a visit with enough time for sightseeing and return travel between your actual arrival and the deadline. Move it to the next day if time is short.

What if the art museum is closed on my one-night Matsue trip?

Shimane Art Museum usually closes Tuesdays. If Tuesday is a Japanese public holiday, it opens and closes the next day instead. Exhibition schedules can change closures, so choose your castle and museum order using the opening calendar. Omitting the indoor collection subtracts ¥400, leaving a ¥1,700 subtotal; visiting both costs ¥2,100. Lodging, meals, airport transfers, and special exhibitions cost extra. Walk to and from the museum from Matsue Station.
