Where should you stay in Shimane: Matsue or Izumo?
Choose a base near JR Matsue Station for the castle, exhibits, and Adachi Museum, or near Izumoshi Station for the shrine and beach. To visit both cities, decide first whether to return to one hotel or stay in Izumo so you can compare the number of trips.
Choose the Shimane attractions you want to see first
Choose among Matsue Castle's keep and lakeside exhibits, Adachi's gardens in Yasugi, and Izumo's shrine and beach. For a boat trip along the castle waterways, also check Horikawa boarding points and operating conditions in the attraction guide.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose between the castle interior and lakeside art museum in Matsue, or an Izumo Taisha visit and beach walk. Routes with Adachi Museum in Yasugi suit an interest in gardens and Japanese paintings. Compare staying in Matsue throughout with moving your hotel to Izumo.
2 days, 1 night
Stay one night in Matsue for a day each at the castle keep and lakeside art museum, or in Izumo for separate shrine and beach days. On the Matsue route's second day, walk between the station and museum. Reduce sightseeing if you arrive late or depart early on the final day.
3 days, 2 nights
For art museums, stay two nights in Matsue and take a Yasugi day trip. For the shrine and beach, move to Izumo on day 2. The two routes end at different stations. Reach Adachi Museum by shuttle from Yasugi and collect your return boarding ticket before sightseeing.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay two nights in Matsue, then one in Izumo for separate shrine and beach visits. For gardens and Japanese paintings, visit Adachi Museum in Yasugi on day 2, allowing time for round-trip JR and shuttle travel. For a collection exhibition in central Matsue, choose Shimane Art Museum; that route walks to and from Matsue Station.
5 days, 4 nights
Stay four nights in Matsue and take separate Yasugi and Izumo day trips if you prefer one hotel. For two days at the shrine and beach, start with two nights in Izumo, then move to Matsue.
Where should I stay?
Overnight bases and sightseeing areas
Matsue · 松江, Yasugi · 安来, and Izumo · 出雲 are in eastern Shimane. Adachi Museum of Art is in Yasugi, outside central Matsue. Take JR to Yasugi Station, then a shuttle or local bus. Iwami Ginzan and the Oki Islands are outside this eastern itinerary.

Choose your accommodation and arrival/departure stations
A Matsue Station base makes it easier to split castle and exhibition visits from a Yasugi round trip. The route spending two days at the shrine and beach stays near Izumoshi Station. Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station is separate from JR Matsue Station; staying there adds travel time to JR. Choose a base around your plans to travel between the cities and your final departure station.

Compare transport costs for your departure station
The one-night Matsue route adds castle admission, two Lakeline rides, and an optional collection exhibition. The one-night Izumo subtotal varies with the number of Aeon Mall-route bus rides between Izumoshi Station and the shrine area. JR between Matsue and Izumoshi or Yasugi, lodging, meals, and airport transfers are excluded from both one-night subtotals.
Choose your JR travel dates from Matsue to Yasugi or Izumoshi, then compare them with the Tottori–Matsue Pass coverage area. The adult pass costs ¥4,000 for three consecutive days and also covers Matsue Lakeline buses. Buyers need both a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor residence status, and must show their passport at collection. Japanese nationals are ineligible. Do not directly compare the one-night admission and ordinary bus subtotal with the pass price; if you already use the pass, remove duplicate Lakeline spending. Ichibata Electric Railway, the Aeon Mall-route shrine bus, and attraction admission are not counted under the same entitlement here. Adachi Museum's free shuttle is independent of JR pass benefits.
For an Adachi Museum day trip from Matsue, connect JR to Yasugi with the museum's return shuttle. When moving to Izumo, choose a shrine bus separately after arriving at Izumoshi Station. Distinguish Ichibata trains from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station from JR trains leaving Matsue Station.

Three nights: gardens or lakeside exhibits?
For garden viewing on your second Matsue day, choose Adachi Museum in Yasugi; for a lakeside collection exhibition, choose Shimane Art Museum. After moving to Izumo, visit the shrine and beach on separate days. The Tottori–Matsue Pass covers three consecutive days, so it does not cover this entire four-day trip. Buyers need both a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor residence status, and must show their passport at collection. Japanese nationals are ineligible. Distinguish JR and Lakeline coverage from Izumo buses and admission, and compare ordinary tickets for your actual sections.

The one-night Matsue route adds castle admission, two Lakeline rides, and an optional collection exhibition. The one-night Izumo subtotal depends on the number of Aeon Mall-route bus trips from Izumoshi Station toward the shrine. JR between Matsue and Izumoshi or Yasugi, lodging, meals, and airport transfers are excluded from both one-night subtotals.
Castle keep and lakeside art museum · ¥1,700–¥2,100
Matsue Castle ¥1,200 + two Lakeline rides at ¥250 each + art museum collection exhibition ¥400. The subtotal is ¥2,100 with the indoor museum visit, or ¥1,700 if you omit the collection, such as during a closure. You walk to and from the museum, so no museum bus fare is added. Special exhibitions, lodging, meals, airport transfers, and unlisted transport and activities cost extra.

Frequently asked questions
Are Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and JR Matsue the same station?
They are different stations. JR trips from Matsue to Yasugi or Izumoshi leave from JR Matsue Station. The Lakeline to the castle also leaves from outside JR Matsue Station. For Ichibata Electric Railway trips toward Izumo, check whether departure is from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station and plan travel from your hotel to that station separately.
