Where should you stay in Shimane: Matsue or Izumo?

Stay near JR Matsue for the castle, exhibitions and Adachi Museum, or near Izumoshi for shrine and beach. If visiting both cities, first decide whether to make return trips from one hotel or stay in Izumo too; this helps compare journey numbers.

Choose the Shimane attractions you want to see first

Choose among Matsue Castle keep, lakeside exhibitions, Adachi gardens in Yasugi, and Izumo’s shrine and beach. For a boat view of the castle waterways, check Horikawa landings and operating conditions in the attraction guide.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose Matsue Castle’s interior and lakeside museum, or Izumo Taisha worship and a beach walk. For gardens and Japanese paintings, consider an Adachi route in Yasugi. Compare staying in Matsue throughout with moving your hotel to Izumo.

1 night, 2 days

Spend 1 night in Matsue to see the keep and lakeside museum on separate days, or in Izumo to separate shrine and beach. Day 2 of the Matsue route walks between station and museum. Reduce sightseeing if arriving late or leaving early on the final day.

2 nights, 3 days

For museums, stay 2 nights in Matsue and make a Yasugi day trip. For shrine and beach, move to Izumo on day 2. The routes end at different stations. Reach Adachi by shuttle from Yasugi, and collect return numbered tickets before visiting.

3 nights, 4 days

Spend 2 nights in Matsue, then 1 in Izumo to separate shrine and beach visits. For gardens and Japanese paintings, visit Adachi in Yasugi on day 2, allowing return JR and shuttle time. For a collection exhibition in central Matsue, choose Shimane Art Museum and walk both ways from Matsue Station.

4 nights, 5 days

Stay 4 nights in Matsue and make separate Yasugi and Izumo trips if you prefer one hotel. For shrine and beach on different days, another option starts with 2 nights in Izumo before moving to Matsue.

Where should you stay?

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas

Matsue, Yasugi and Izumo are in eastern Shimane. The Adachi Museum of Art is in Yasugi, outside central Matsue. Take JR to Yasugi Station, then a shuttle or local bus. Iwami Ginzan and the Oki Islands are outside these eastern routes.

Choose accommodation, arrival and departure stations

Matsue Station works as a base for separate castle, exhibition and Yasugi days. Stay near Izumoshi Station for the two-day shrine and beach route. Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station differs from JR Matsue Station, so add time to reach JR if staying there. Choose your base around any city move and the final departure station.

Compare transport costs for your starting station

The one-night Matsue route adds keep admission, two Lake Line rides and the selected collection exhibition. The one-night Izumo cost varies with the number of bus rides via AEON Mall between Izumoshi Station and the shrine area. Matsue–Izumoshi or Yasugi JR, accommodation, meals and airport journeys are excluded from both one-night subtotals.

Choose your JR travel days from Matsue to Yasugi or Izumoshi and compare them with the Tottori–Matsue Pass area. It costs JPY 4,000 per adult for 3 consecutive days and also covers the Matsue Lake Line. Buyers need both a passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status; show the passport on collection. Japanese nationals are ineligible. Do not compare the one-night Matsue admission-and-bus subtotal directly with the pass price. If already using the pass, remove duplicate Lake Line spending. Ichibata Railway, shrine buses via AEON Mall and facility admission are excluded from this coverage calculation. The free Adachi shuttle operates separately from JR pass benefits.

For Adachi, connect your Yasugi-bound JR train with the museum’s return shuttle. On a hotel-move day to Izumo, choose a separate shrine bus after reaching Izumoshi Station. Distinguish Ichibata Railway departing Matsue Shinjiko Onsen from trains departing JR Matsue.

Frequently asked questions

Are Matsue Shinjiko Onsen and JR Matsue the same station?

They are different stations. JR trains towards Yasugi and Izumoshi leave JR Matsue; the castle’s Lake Line also starts outside that station. For Ichibata Railway towards Izumo, check whether your service leaves Matsue Shinjiko Onsen, and separately check access from your hotel to the right station.
