Shimane trip planning: should you stay in Matsue or Izumo?
Choose a base near JR Matsue Station for the castle, exhibitions and Adachi Museum of Art, or near Izumoshi Station for the shrine and beach. If visiting both cities, first decide whether to make return trips from one base or stay in Izumo, so you can compare the number of journeys.
Start with the sights you want to see in Shimane
Choose among Matsue Castle keep and lakeside exhibitions, the Adachi gardens in Yasugi, and Izumo's shrine and beach. If you want to see the castle waterways by boat, check Horikawa boarding points and operating conditions in the attraction guide.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose between the interior of Matsue Castle and lakeside art, or worship at Izumo Oyashiro Shrine and a beach walk. For gardens and Japanese paintings, there are routes including the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi. Compare staying in Matsue throughout with moving accommodation to Izumo.
2 days / 1 night
Spend one night in Matsue for separate days at the castle keep and lakeside art museum, or in Izumo to separate the shrine visit and beach walk. On the Matsue route's second day, walk from the station to the museum and back. Reduce sightseeing if arriving late or leaving early on the final day.
3 days / 2 nights
For an art-focused trip, spend two nights in Matsue and make a trip to Yasugi. For the shrine and beach, you can move to Izumo on Day 2 instead. These routes finish at different stations. Reach Adachi Museum of Art by shuttle from Yasugi Station and collect your numbered return ticket before exploring.
4 days / 3 nights
Spend two nights in Matsue and one in Izumo, with the shrine and beach on separate days. For gardens and Japanese paintings, visit the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi on Day 2, allowing time for the return JR and shuttle journeys. For the collection exhibition while staying in Matsue, choose the Shimane Art Museum, reached on foot from Matsue Station in both directions.
5 days / 4 nights
If you prefer to keep the same accommodation, spend four nights in Matsue and make separate trips to Yasugi and Izumo. To split the shrine and beach over two days, you can start with two nights in Izumo before moving to Matsue.
Where should you stay?
Places to stay and sightseeing areas
Matsue, Yasugi and Izumo are in eastern Shimane. The Adachi Museum of Art is in Yasugi, rather than central Matsue. Take JR to Yasugi Station, then a shuttle or local bus. Iwami Ginzan and the Oki Islands are outside these eastern itineraries.

Choosing accommodation and your arrival and departure stations
A base near Matsue Station lets you separate castle and exhibition visits from a day trip to Yasugi. Routes with two days for the shrine and beach use accommodation near Izumoshi Station. Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station is separate from JR Matsue, so allow time to reach the JR station if staying there. Choose your base according to whether you will change cities and where your trip ends.

Planning transport, meals and opening days
Compare transport costs for your departure station
The one-night Matsue route adds castle admission, two Lake Line rides and the optional collection exhibition. The one-night Izumo cost varies with the number of bus rides via AEON Mall from Izumoshi Station towards the shrine. JR journeys between Matsue and Izumoshi or Yasugi, accommodation, meals and airport transfers are excluded from both one-night subtotals.
Choose your travel days from Matsue to Yasugi or Izumoshi and compare the journeys with the Tottori-Matsue Pass coverage. The adult pass costs JPY 4,000 for three consecutive days and also covers the Matsue Lake Line. Buyers must hold both a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status, and must show their passport when collecting the pass. Japanese nationals are ineligible. Do not compare the one-night Matsue subtotal, including admission and ordinary bus fares, directly with the pass price. If already using the pass, remove duplicated Lake Line spending. Ichibata Railway, shrine-bound buses via AEON Mall and facility admission are excluded from the same entitlement. The free Adachi shuttle is independent of JR pass benefits.
For an Adachi Museum day trip, connect the JR service to Yasugi with your return museum shuttle. When moving accommodation to Izumo, choose the shrine-bound bus separately after arriving at Izumoshi Station. Distinguish Ichibata Railway departures from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station from JR departures at Matsue Station.

Three nights and four days: gardens or lakeside exhibitions?
For gardens on your second day in Matsue, choose the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi; for the lakeside collection exhibition, choose the Shimane Art Museum. Split the shrine and beach between days after moving accommodation to Izumo. The Tottori-Matsue Pass lasts three consecutive days, so it does not cover this whole four-day itinerary. Separate JR and Lake Line coverage from Izumo bus fares and admission, then compare ordinary tickets for your actual journeys.
