Kumamoto Airport to the city: buses, fares and last departures
For a hotel near Kumamoto Station or an onward Shinkansen, take a regular airport bus bound for the station. For a city-centre hotel, choose Sakuramachi or Torichosuji according to its address. The special express finishes at Sakuramachi: it does not take you directly to Kumamoto Station.

A direct bus or a cheaper route with a rail transfer?
A bus to the stop nearest your hotel avoids carrying luggage between vehicles. The liner and JR route costs less to reach the station, but adds a transfer and train waiting time. There is no operating railway station at the airport terminal.
Times below are time on the vehicle, not time from landing to your hotel. Allow separately for immigration, baggage collection, customs, tickets, waiting, transfers and walking. Do not book a Shinkansen connection using the bus ride alone.

The Airport Liner has cost JPY 200 per person since 1 July 2026. Older descriptions calling it free are out of date. With the JPY 560 ordinary JR fare, the total to Kumamoto Station is JPY 760; this does not include limited-express supplements or Shinkansen travel.

From arrivals to the right bus bay
- Complete arrival formalities and collect your luggage, then come out into the level 1 arrivals lobby. Follow the バス (bus) signs to the boarding area outside. Limousine ticket machines are beside the level 1 boarding area.
- Use bay 4 for a regular limousine to Kumamoto Station or Suizenji. Check 空港リムジンバス and the destination: other intercity buses also use the area. The special express from bay 3 serves Torichosuji and Sakuramachi, not Kumamoto Station or Suizenji.
- Prepare a ticket or accepted payment method and board on a first-come, first-served basis. These Kyushu Sanko and Sanko buses are not reserved-seat services. A machine-issued ticket does not secure a seat.
- For cash or a paper ticket, board at the front and take a 整理券 numbered slip. When leaving, put the slip and ticket or exact fare in the fare box. Cash payment does not give change, so prepare smaller money first.
- For supported contactless credit cards, tap the same card when boarding and leaving. Kumamon IC is also accepted. Suica, PASMO and other nationwide interoperable transport IC cards have not been accepted on Sanko buses since 16 November 2024. Contactless credit cards and transport IC cards are different payment systems.
- Confirm your stop with the driver and follow the luggage instructions. Vehicles and storage space vary; ask the operator about several or oversized suitcases rather than assuming every bus has a large luggage hold.
Terminal floor map · Limousine ticket machines · Sanko payment instructions
The Airport Liner has different rules. Before boarding, buy its JPY 200 ticket at the indoor machine beside entrance C. The machine supports cash and listed cashless methods, including transport IC cards. This does not mean Sanko accepts the same cards.
Kumamoto Station: bus arrival bay to the east entrance
Kumamoto Station · 熊本駅: take the regular station-bound limousine from bay 4 to 熊本駅前 (Kumamoto-ekimae), about 60–65 minutes for JPY 1,400. It passes Torichosuji and Sakuramachi before reaching the station.
The official Sanko map labels bay 8 as arrivals only. Collect your luggage and follow 白川口(東口), the Shirakawa east entrance, towards the station building. Bay 7 is for buses going back to the airport, not your arrival point.
Follow 在来線改札口 for ordinary JR lines or 新幹線改札口 for the Shinkansen. The JR layout shows lifts between the paid area and platforms. There is no need to walk around the building to its west side just to find the Shinkansen gates. For a west-side hotel, use the public passage towards 新幹線口(西口).
Rail tickets and seat reservations are separate. If a flight delay or traffic means you miss a reserved train, ask your booking provider about the rules for your ticket; travel on the next train is not automatically guaranteed.
City-centre hotels: Sakuramachi or Torichosuji
Sakuramachi: from the terminal’s arrival area
Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal · 熊本桜町バスターミナル is separate from the railway station. The regular bus takes about 50–55 minutes and the special express about 45 minutes; both cost JPY 1,400.
Get off in the level 1 arrival area. The official map marks red bays, including 9–13, as drop-off areas; follow your bus’s actual arrival instructions. Bay 6 is an airport-bound departure bay, not a fixed arrival bay. Use the south exits for Shinshigai and Karashimacho hotels, or the north exits towards the castle and civic hall. The official terminal map shows lifts and the level 2 concourse.
Torichosuji: the bus stop is not the tram platform
Torichosuji · 通町筋: get off at the bus stop with this name, about 50 minutes by regular service or 40 minutes by special express, JPY 1,400. The pavement-side bus stop and the tram platform in the road are separate boarding points.
For shopping-street accommodation, continue towards Shimotori · 下通 or Kamitori · 上通 according to the hotel address. An entrance may be on a side street rather than the main road, so use the hotel’s entrance directions as well as a map. Walking time depends on the exact hotel.
Via Higo-Ozu: JPY 760, with waiting and a transfer
Higo-Ozu Station · 肥後大津駅: the Airport Liner costs JPY 200 and takes about 15 minutes. The ordinary JR Hohi Main Line train to Kumamoto costs JPY 560 and takes about 40 minutes. Add train waiting and time to move your luggage; the lower fare does not always make this the faster route.
- Buy a liner ticket at the indoor level 1 machine beside entrance C. Since 11 September 2026, cash and cashless passengers both buy tickets before boarding.
- At bay 6, check 空港ライナー / 肥後大津駅. The liner runs daily without reservations.
- Alight on the station’s south side and enter through 南口. For the return journey, the ticket machine is in the vending-machine corner beside the south-side boarding area.
- Buy your JR ticket and follow 豊肥本線 熊本方面 for an ordinary train towards Kumamoto, not the opposite direction towards Aso and Miyaji. Check the departure board for the platform.
- At Kumamoto, continue to your hotel or another train. City-centre hotels may need a walk or tram ride, so JPY 760 is not necessarily the total to your door.
The liner operator, Dai-Aso Ozu Taxi, can be contacted on +81 96 293 3355. A full vehicle may mean waiting about 10–15 minutes for the next one. Smaller vehicles also run, so large-luggage space is not guaranteed. Contact the operator by the previous day for wheelchair travel.

Kumamoto Castle: walk from Sakuramachi to the south entrance
Kumamoto Castle · 熊本城 is not an airport-bus stop. From Sakuramachi’s north exit, head towards Sakuranobaba Josaien · 桜の馬場 城彩苑, then follow 南口券売所 to the south ticket office. Routing to a map pin on the castle keep can take you away from the actual visitor entrance.
The official free shuttle links Josaien, the south entrance area and Ninomaru car park. Listed hours are 09:00–17:00 at roughly 10–15-minute intervals, with the last trip leaving Ninomaru. Check the official access map for stops and temporary changes.
Restoration continues and visitors use the specially opened areas and walkway. Weekday entry and exit are through the south entrance only. A north entrance is also listed for weekends and public holidays but may be restricted by works. From September to June, the listed hours are 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00 and last keep entry 16:30; do not apply July–August extensions to an autumn visit.
The notice updated 18 September 2026 distinguishes castle reopening from closures such as the Wakuwakuza museum. Do not assume every nearby facility is open. Wheeled luggage is not allowed in the keep, and there are no large-luggage lockers inside the paid area; use your hotel or check lockers outside it.
Suizenji Jojuen: a regular bus, then five minutes to the main gate
Suizenji Jojuen · 水前寺成趣園: take the regular limousine from bay 4 to 水前寺公園前 (Suizenji Koen-mae), then walk to the main gate. The bus costs JPY 1,000 and takes about 35 minutes; the walk is about five minutes. The special express does not stop here.
Head along the northern pavement towards the garden approach and follow 正門. The official garden map labels the main gate 15. Do not route to entrance 18 on the northern approach, which is not the normal visitor entrance. Listed hours are 08:30–17:00, last admission 16:30. For an afternoon arrival, allow for luggage, waiting and walking before deciding whether you can enter.
Taking a tram from the station or city centre
From the separate tram stop in front of Kumamoto Station, take line A towards Kengunmachi · 健軍町 and alight at Suizenji Koen · 水前寺公園, then walk about five minutes. From Torichosuji, either A or B towards Kengunmachi serves the stop. The adult single tram fare is JPY 200, separate from the airport bus.
On ordinary trams, board at the middle or rear and pay when leaving at the front. Low-floor vehicles have different door arrangements; follow the boarding signs. Prepare exact cash, or use a supported nationwide IC card such as Suica or PASMO. Tram IC acceptance does not apply to Sanko airport buses.

Last airport departures and the Higo-Ozu rail connection
These are airport-to-city services, not buses back to the airport. The underlying Korean review checked weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays/public holidays against the timetable revised on 1 April 2026. Check temporary changes for your travel date.
| Service | Departure | Arrival or connection | Applicability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular bus → Kumamoto Station | Airport 21:30 | Station 22:21 | Weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays |
| Regular bus → Sakuramachi | Airport 21:30 | 22:12 | Same days |
| Regular bus → Torichosuji | Airport 21:30 | 22:06 | Same days |
| Special express | Airport 19:50 | Torichosuji 20:27 / Sakuramachi 20:33 | Does not serve Kumamoto Station |
| Airport Liner → Higo-Ozu | Airport 22:00 | About 15 min, rail waiting extra | Daily; timetable revised 1 July 2026 |
| JR → Kumamoto | Higo-Ozu 22:44 | Kumamoto 23:23 | Train 448D; October 2026 daily operation |
A punctual 22:00 liner leaves time before the JR departure, but full vehicles, flight delays and rail disruption mean this is not a guaranteed connection. The liner timetable says it may not accommodate a delayed final flight. Do not confuse this with the last 20:00 liner in the opposite direction.
Sanko links only the final airport bus to flight arrivals and handles major delays where possible. This is not a promise to wait indefinitely for every domestic or international passenger. Ask staff about the actual remaining service after leaving arrivals.

Check the last Shinkansen separately for your date; the station arrival times above do not promise an onward connection. If public transport has finished, tell your accommodation about a late check-in and ask about a taxi or the conditions of your booked vehicle.
Taxis, booked vehicles and hire cars
Taxi rank and estimated fares
Use the official level 1 taxi rank and show the driver your accommodation’s Japanese address. The airport lists Kumamoto City Taxi Association on +81 96 365 6633 for dispatch or booking enquiries.
The airport’s estimates dated 1 September 2026 are about JPY 6,100 / 45 minutes to Kumamoto Station, JPY 5,700 / 40 minutes to Sakuramachi, or JPY 5,600 / 40 minutes to Torichosuji, per ordinary car. Motorway tolls are excluded. These are estimates, not fixed fares; traffic, vehicle and the hotel address affect the price. The table does not establish whether late-night surcharges are included. Ask about those, waiting, dispatch charges, payment and luggage capacity before booking.
Booked vehicles: use the actual address and confirmation
The airport-linked nearMe service includes Kumamoto City in its coverage and lists web booking up to one hour before pickup, with advance credit-card payment. First-time users register an account. Distinguish shared and private options; enter the date, address, passengers, luggage and flight to see what can actually be supplied.
A submitted request is not a confirmed vehicle. The listed process advises availability by email up to five hours before pickup, or within 30 minutes for same-day bookings. Follow the confirmed email for pickup location and vehicle number. Delay contact, waiting, changes and cancellation fees depend on that confirmation and product. The one-hour booking deadline does not guarantee a late-night car or free cancellation.
Hire cars: counter first, then the company’s collection process
Sorayoka Visitor Center · そらよかビジターセンター has rental-car counters. Follow the terminal signs from arrivals, give your reservation name and check the shuttle to the branch. Companies without a counter use the contact and collection instructions on your confirmation.
The airport lists most counters as 09:00–18:00 and Toyota as 08:00–20:00; branch hours differ. Contact the booked branch if your flight is late. After collection, route to the hotel’s car-park entrance, and allow for insurance, fuel, parking and tolls in addition to hire. Confirm the driving documents valid in Japan with the company before booking.

A weather forecast alone does not confirm a cancellation. With heavy luggage, rain or a late arrival, check the remaining route to your hotel entrance and compare a taxi if the walk is impractical. This guide cannot guarantee road access or personal safety.

These are official operator links, not affiliate links. Bus information, booked cars and hire cars are separate services. An Aso tour or castle admission ticket does not include this airport transfer, and a rail pass does not automatically cover the liner or airport bus.
Kumamoto Airport transfer questions
How do I get from Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station?
Take a regular airport limousine from bay 4 outside level 1 and get off at Kumamoto-ekimae. The adult single fare is JPY 1,400 and the ride takes about 60–65 minutes. From arrival bay 8, head towards the Shirakawaguchi east entrance. The special express ends at Sakuramachi and does not serve Kumamoto Station.
Which stop should I use for a city-centre hotel?
Use Torichosuji for accommodation near that stop, or Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal for the Sakuramachi area. Both regular and special-express buses cost JPY 1,400 for an adult single. Check your hotel address rather than travelling to the railway station and doubling back.
Do I need to reserve the airport bus?
The city-bound limousine and the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu run without seat reservations, on a first-come, first-served basis. Buying a ticket in advance does not reserve a seat. Check whether you need a regular or special-express bus.
Can I use Suica on the airport bus?
Not on Sanko airport buses. Pay with cash, supported contactless credit cards or a Kumamon IC card, or buy a ticket at the level 1 machines beside the boarding area. The Airport Liner is different: buy its JPY 200 ticket before boarding at the indoor machine beside entrance C, using a supported payment method. Suica and PASMO are accepted on city trams, but that does not make them valid on Sanko buses.
Is there a train station at the airport?
There is no operating railway or subway station at the airport terminal. For JR, take the Airport Liner from bay 6 to the south side of Higo-Ozu Station, then a Hohi Main Line train towards Kumamoto. The liner costs JPY 200 and takes about 15 minutes; the ordinary JR fare is JPY 560 and the train takes about 40 minutes. The JPY 760 total excludes waiting and the transfer.
Can I bring a large suitcase?
The limousine has luggage space, but its position and capacity vary by vehicle. The Airport Liner also uses smaller vehicles: ask the operator about large or multiple suitcases before travelling. Wheelchair users must contact the liner operator by the previous day. Wheeled luggage is not allowed inside the Kumamoto Castle keep.
How do I reach Kumamoto Castle?
Get off the airport bus at Sakuramachi, head north via Josaien and continue to the south ticket office. The castle also lists a free shuttle from Josaien towards the south entrance. On weekdays, admission and exit are through the south entrance only; check the castle notices for works and temporary restrictions. Admission is separate from the bus fare.
Which bus stops near Suizenji Jojuen?
Take the regular limousine from airport bay 4 to Suizenji Koen-mae, then walk about five minutes to the main gate. The adult fare is JPY 1,000 and the bus ride takes about 35 minutes. The special express does not stop there. From the city, a tram towards Kengunmachi stops at Suizenji Koen.
What if my flight is delayed and I miss the last bus?
The regular city-bound limousine’s last scheduled airport departure is 21:30 on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Sanko links only the final bus with arriving flights and handles major delays where possible; indefinite waiting is not guaranteed. The Airport Liner’s 22:00 departure and JR’s 22:44 departure from Higo-Ozu are not a guaranteed connection. If services have ended, ask about the airport taxi rank or your booked vehicle.
Where can I check disruptions on the day?
Check the airport and airline alerts, Sanko notices and live bus search, Airport Liner notices, and JR Kyushu service information. For trams, use Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau notices. A typhoon or heavy-rain forecast alone does not confirm that a service has been cancelled.
