KMJ → Kumamoto Station, Sakuramachi, Torichosuji

Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station, Sakuramachi and Torichosuji

For Kumamoto Station hotels or a Shinkansen connection, take the regular airport bus towards Kumamoto Station. For a city-centre hotel, choose Sakuramachi or Torichosuji according to its address. The special rapid bus terminates at Sakuramachi and does not continue directly to Kumamoto Station.

Compare whether to go straight to the accommodation or transfer at Higo-Ozu Station.

If you feel uncomfortable carrying your luggage and changing trains, you can simply take a bus to a stop close to your accommodation. If you want to save money on getting to the station, you can compare Liner and JR, but it adds one extra train wait and transfer. There is currently no rail station available at the airport.

Below is the time in the vehicle. The time required for immigration, baggage collection, customs, ticketing, waiting, transfer, and walking to the hotel must be added separately. When making a Shinkansen reservation, don't just look at the bus journey alone when deciding on a train connection.

1F arrivals → choose the bus → prepare payment

  1. After arrival procedures and baggage collection, follow バス signs from 1F arrivals to the stops outside. The airport-bus ticket machine is on 1F beside the bus area.
  2. Stop 4: regular bus to Kumamoto Station or Suizenji. Stop 3: special rapid bus to the city centre. Check the destination and stopping pattern, since intercity buses also use the area. The special rapid serves Torichosuji/Sakuramachi but skips Kumamoto Station and Suizenji.
  3. Kyushu Sanko/Sanko buses use first-come, first-served boarding without reservations. A machine ticket does not reserve a seat.
  4. For cash or a paper ticket, board at the front and take a numbered ticket. On alighting, put it with the ticket/exact cash fare into the fare box. Prepare change before paying.
  5. Supported bank-card payment requires the same card on boarding and alighting. Kumamon IC is also accepted. Sanko Bus stopped accepting nationwide reciprocal cards such as Suica/PASMO on 16 November 2024. Bank-card taps and transport IC cards are separate methods.
  6. Confirm your arrival stop with the driver before loading bags. Vehicle access and luggage space vary; ask the operator ahead about large or multiple bags and keep aisles clear.

The Higo-Ozu Airport Liner has different rules: buy a JPY 200 ticket before boarding at the indoor machine beside Exit C. It accepts cash, bank cards and transport IC cards. Its IC acceptance does not extend to Sanko buses.

Kumamoto Station hotels and Shinkansen: regular bus from stop 4

Follow stop 4 → regular bus to Kumamoto Station · 熊本駅 → Kumamoto-ekimae · 熊本駅前, about 60–65 minutes and JPY 1,400. The bus calls at Torichosuji and Sakuramachi first; city-centre hotel guests can alight earlier.

Sanko’s map marks station-front stop 8 as arrival-only. Collect your bags and follow Shirakawa Exit · 白川口(東口) towards the station building. Airport-bound stop 7 is different.

Inside, follow 在来線改札口 for conventional JR trains or 新幹線改札口 for Shinkansen, rather than walking around the exterior to the west. The station plan shows lifts connecting platforms inside the gates. For a western hotel, use the public passage towards Shinkansen Exit · 新幹線口(西口).

Train tickets/reservations are separate. If a flight or road delay causes a missed train, contact the ticket issuer about the actual ticket’s change/refund conditions. Another reserved train is not automatically guaranteed.

Sakuramachi and Torichosuji hotels: alight in the city centre

Sakuramachi Bus Terminal → hotel

Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal · 熊本桜町バスターミナル is separate from JR. A regular bus takes about 50–55 minutes; special rapid about 45, both JPY 1,400. Check the hotel’s address against the terminal.

The bus enters the 1F arrival area. Red bays including 9–13 on the official plan are arrival-only; follow actual arrival instructions. Bay 6 is airport-bound boarding, not the arrival bay.

Use the southern entrance for Shinshigai/Karashimacho hotels and the northern side for the castle/civic hall. The official map shows the 2F concourse and lifts.

Torichosuji: pavement bus stop, separate from the tram

For Torichosuji · 通町筋 hotels, alight at that bus stop: about fifty minutes regular or forty special rapid, JPY 1,400. The pavement airport-bus stop and tram stop in the road are separate.

Continue towards Shimotori · 下通 or Kamitori · 上通 according to your address. If the entrance is in a side lane, use the hotel’s own access instructions. Walking time varies by hotel.

Via Higo-Ozu: JPY 760, with one rail change

Airport Liner JPY 200/about fifteen minutes + JR Hohi Main Line local JPY 560/about forty minutes reaches Kumamoto Station. The cheaper fare adds waiting and station movement, so it is not always faster.

  1. Buy a Liner ticket from the indoor machine beside 1F Exit C. Since 11 September 2026, cash and cashless tickets are both bought before boarding.
  2. Go to airport stop 6 and check 空港ライナー / 肥後大津駅. It operates daily without reservations, first come, first served.
  3. Alight south of Higo-Ozu Station · 肥後大津駅 and enter through the south entrance. Return tickets are sold in the machine corner beside the southern bus stop.
  4. Buy a Kumamoto ticket and follow 豊肥本線 熊本方面 towards Kumamoto, opposite the Aso/Miyaji direction. Check the platform on the day.
  5. At Kumamoto, change to JR/Shinkansen or leave towards your hotel. A central hotel may require extra tram/walking costs; JPY 760 is not necessarily the hotel total.

The Liner is operated by Oaso Ozu Taxi: 096-293-3355. If full, the next vehicle may mean a ten-to-fifteen-minute wait. Some vehicles are small; confirm large bags and contact the operator by the previous day for wheelchair use.

Kumamoto Castle: Sakuramachi → southern admission entrance

Kumamoto Castle · 熊本城 is reached on foot after the bus: Sakuramachi northern exit → Sakuranobaba Josaien · 桜の馬場 城彩苑 → castle south ticket office. Use 南口券売所 signs rather than a central castle-tower pin, which may route you away from the admission entrance.

If the walk is difficult, compare the official free shuttle between Josaien, South Entrance and Ninomaru Car Park: 09:00–17:00, approximately every ten-to-fifteen minutes, with the final departure from Ninomaru. Check the official access map for stop positions and temporary changes.

Restoration continues, with access through the special public area/viewing passage. Weekday entry/exit is south only; northern access is also listed at weekends/holidays but may be restricted by works. September–June hours are 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00 and tower entry 16:30. July/August extensions do not apply to autumn.

The 18 September 2026 notice distinguishes resumed castle viewing from the temporary Waku Wakuza museum closure. Wheeled luggage is not permitted in the tower and there are no large-bag lockers inside the paid area. Consider your hotel or confirmed storage outside first.

Suizenji Jojuen: regular bus → main gate

For Suizenji Jōjuen · 水前寺成趣園, use airport stop 4 → regular limousine → Suizenji-koen-mae · 水前寺公園前 → main gate. The bus takes about 35 minutes and costs JPY 1,000; the main gate is about five minutes on foot. The special rapid bus skips this stop.

Walk north towards the garden approach and 正門 signs. Main gate 15 on the garden map is for visitors; northern approach entrance 18 is not the general tourist entrance. Hours are 08:30–17:00, last admission 16:30. Include baggage collection, waiting and the entrance walk when judging a late-afternoon arrival.

From Kumamoto Station or Torichosuji by tram

The station tram stop differs from airport-bus arrival stop 8. Take Route A towards Kengunmachi · 健軍町 → Suizenji Park · 水前寺公園, then walk about five minutes to the gate. From Torichosuji, both A and B run in the Kengunmachi direction. The adult tram fare is JPY 200 extra.

Ordinary vehicles board in the middle/rear and pay when alighting at the front. Low-floor vehicles differ; follow door signs. Use exact cash or accepted nationwide IC such as Suica/PASMO. This tram acceptance does not extend to the Sanko airport bus.

An on-time 22:00 Liner leaves time before the last JR train, but full vehicles, flight delays or rail disruption can affect the connection. Connection is not guaranteed. The operator's table advises that the liner may not be able to respond if the last flight is late. Do not confuse the direction with the last 20:00 bus from Higo-Ozu Station → Airport.

Sanko links the final airport departure to arriving aircraft within its operating conditions. This does not guarantee unlimited waiting for every domestic or international passenger. After arrival procedures, ask staff/operator whether the remaining bus is running and whether you can board.

For Shinkansen transfers, check the desired date and last train separately on JR. The arrival time at Kumamoto Station above does not indicate a Shinkansen connection. If you missed the last public transportation, inform them of the check-in deadline at your accommodation and check the response conditions for airport taxis or already reserved vehicles.

For late arrivals, check taxi total and actual vehicle

Go to the 1F taxi rank shown on the airport map and show the driver your hotel’s Japanese address. You don't need a bus ticket. Ask the airport-listed Kumamoto City Taxi Association about availability: 096-365-6633.

Highway tolls are not included in the above amount. This is an estimate that varies depending on traffic, hotel address, and vehicle type, and is not a flat rate product. The airport table does not establish whether night surcharge is included; confirm the total for your arrival time.

Check the night surcharge, waiting, dispatch charge, payment method, and luggage limit when dispatching a vehicle.

Reservation vehicle is based on quote including airport and hotel address.

The nearMe Kumamoto Airport service connected to the airport includes Kumamoto City in its operating area. Web reservation/credit card advance payment up to 1 hour before boarding. When using for the first time, membership registration is required.

Distinguish between shared ride options and exclusive use, and enter the date, hotel address, number of people, suitcases, and flight to check the actual available quote.

Even if you send a reservation, it does not confirm the dispatch. Official information explains that availability is normally notified by email five hours before boarding, and that same-day reservations will be notified within 30 minutes. Please follow the boarding location and vehicle number in the vehicle information email.

In case of flight delay, you must check the confirmation email and the conditions of the selected product for contact/waiting/change/cancellation fees. The fact that you can apply 1 hour in advance does not guarantee securing a vehicle after the last train or free cancellation.

For rental cars, check reception and pickup at the Sorayoka Visitor Center.

There is a rental car counter at Sorayoka Visitor Center. From the arrival lobby, follow the building directions to the center, provide the name of the person making the reservation, and confirm the company pickup and office shuttle and collection procedures.

For companies without a counter, follow the contact/transfer method on the reservation confirmation.

Airport official counter reception is usually from 9:00 to 18:00, and Toyota's is from 8:00 to 20:00, but each office's hours are different. If your flight is late, please contact the reservation office.

After collection, set the hotel’s car-park entrance as your destination and calculate insurance, fuel, toll, and parking fees in addition to the rental fee. Please check with the company in advance whether you have valid driving qualification documents in Japan.

During typhoons and heavy rain, check the actual notices for each transportation method.

Weather forecast alone does not guarantee that all traffic will stop. If you arrive late, have a lot of luggage, or rain, check the remaining distance from the drop-off point to the hotel entrance, and if walking is difficult, compare taxis to the accommodation address. We do not guarantee surrounding safety or passage on all roads.

Kumamoto Airport transport FAQ

How do I get from Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station?

Take the regular limousine from 1F stop 4 to Kumamoto-ekimae: JPY 1,400, about 60–65 minutes. Alight at station-front arrival stop 8 and continue to Shirakawa/east entrance. The special rapid bus ends at Sakuramachi, without serving Kumamoto Station.

Where should I alight for Sakuramachi or Torichosuji hotels?

Choose Torichosuji (通町筋) or Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal according to your hotel address. Regular and special rapid buses both cost JPY 1,400. You need not travel to JR and back for a central hotel.

Do I need to reserve the bus?

The city limousine and Higo-Ozu Airport Liner are first come, first served without reservations. Buying a ticket does not reserve a seat. Distinguish regular and special rapid bus stops.

How do I pay?

For the limousine, buy a machine ticket or use cash, supported bank-card tap payment or Kumamon IC. Suica/PASMO and other nationwide reciprocal IC cards do not work on Sanko Bus. The Airport Liner instead requires a JPY 200 ticket bought before boarding at the machine beside Exit C, with cash, bank card or transport IC.

Can I go via Higo-Ozu by train?

Yes: airport stop 6→Airport Liner→Higo-Ozu Station south side→JR Hohi Main Line local towards Kumamoto. The Liner costs JPY 200/about fifteen minutes; JR JPY 560/about forty minutes. Total JPY 760, plus waiting and station movement. The Liner has charged a fare since 1 July 2026.

Is there a train directly at the airport?

No operational train/subway station is inside the terminal. For JR, first take the Liner to Higo-Ozu. Planned airport rail is not an available option in this guide.

Can I bring large luggage?

Limousine storage and access vary by vehicle. The Liner also uses small vehicles, so ask ahead about large/multiple bags and contact it by the previous day for wheelchair use. Wheeled luggage cannot enter Kumamoto Castle’s tower.

How do I reach Kumamoto Castle?

Alight at Sakuramachi and continue north via Josaien to the castle south ticket office, or use the official Josaien–South Entrance shuttle. Weekday entry/exit is south only. Check current works/restrictions. Admission is separate from bus fare.

Where should I alight for Suizenji Jojuen?

Take the regular bus from airport stop 4 to Suizenji-koen-mae: JPY 1,000, about 35 minutes, then walk about five minutes to main gate 15. Special rapid buses skip it. In the city, take a Kengunmachi-bound tram to Suizenji Park and walk to the gate.

What if my flight is late?

The current last regular airport bus is 21:30 on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays/holidays. Its aircraft connection operates within the operator’s conditions, not unlimited waiting. Confirm remaining service after arrival. The 22:00 Liner and 22:44 Higo-Ozu→Kumamoto train are not a guaranteed connection. If missed, contact the official taxi rank or your booked operator.

Where can I check service status?

Check airport/airline notices, Sanko bus notices and live stop search, Liner notices and JR Kyushu separately. Tram information comes from Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau. A weather forecast alone does not establish that every service has stopped.
