Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station and Sakuramachi

If you want to stay at an accommodation near Kumamoto Station or transfer to the Shinkansen, use the regular airport bus bound for Kumamoto Station. For central accommodation, get off at Sakuramachi or Torichosuji stops, depending on your address. The special rapid service ends at Sakuramachi, so it cannot go directly to Kumamoto Station.

Compare whether to go straight to the accommodation or transfer at Higo-Ozu Station.

If you feel uncomfortable carrying your luggage and changing trains, you can simply take a bus to a stop close to your accommodation. If you want to save money on getting to the station, you can compare Liner and JR, but it adds one extra train wait and transfer. There is currently no rail station available at the airport.

Below is the time spent in the vehicle. The time required for immigration, baggage collection, customs, ticketing, waiting, transfer, and walking to the hotel must be added separately. When making a Shinkansen reservation, allow more than the bus ride alone when choosing a connecting train.

The Airport Liner has cost ¥200 since July 1, 2026; older free-liner notices no longer apply. Adding the ¥560 JR local-train fare gives a ¥760 total to Kumamoto Station. Shinkansen and limited-express fares are separate.

At arrivals, check the destination before choosing a bus

  1. After immigration, baggage claim and customs, enter the first-floor arrivals lobby. Follow signs for buses (バス) outside. Airport bus ticket machines are beside the stops.
  2. Use bay 4 for the regular airport limousine bus (空港リムジンバス) to Kumamoto Station or Suizenji Park. Use bay 3 for the special rapid bus to Torichosuji and Sakuramachi. The special rapid bus does not serve Kumamoto Station or Suizenji Park. Check the destination sign and stops: other intercity buses also leave the airport.
  3. Kyushu Sanko Bus and Sanko Bus operate these services without seat reservations. Buying a ticket does not reserve a seat.
  4. For cash or paper tickets, board through the front door and take a numbered ticket. When you get off, put the numbered ticket and your fare or purchased ticket in the fare box. Prepare exact change; onboard cash payments do not provide change.
  5. For supported contactless bank cards, tap the same card when boarding and getting off. Kumamon IC is also accepted. Nationwide transit IC cards such as Suica and PASMO have not been accepted on Sanko buses since November 16, 2024. Contactless bank cards and transit IC cards are different payment methods.
  6. Confirm your stop with the driver before loading your bags. Luggage space and low-floor access vary by vehicle. Ask the operator about large or multiple suitcases, and keep the aisle clear.

Official terminal and first-floor map ↗ · Airport bus ticket machines ↗ · Bus boarding and payment rules ↗

The Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu uses different rules. Buy a ¥200 ticket before boarding at the indoor machine beside Exit C. That machine accepts cash, credit cards and transit IC cards. Its acceptance of Suica does not mean that Sanko airport buses accept Suica.

For Kumamoto Station and the Shinkansen, take the regular bus to the station

For hotels near Kumamoto Station · 熊本駅, take the regular station-bound airport limousine bus from bay 4. Get off at Kumamoto-ekimae (熊本駅前). The adult one-way fare is ¥1,400 and the ride takes about 60–65 minutes. The bus passes Torichosuji and Sakuramachi first; get off there instead if your hotel is in the city center.

Sanko's station map shows arrival bay 8 as drop-off only. Collect your bags and follow signs for the east-side Shirakawa Exit (白川口). Bay 7 is for the return bus to the airport, not this arrival.

Inside the station, follow conventional-line gates (在来線改札口) for local JR trains or Shinkansen gates (新幹線改札口) for bullet trains. You can reach the gates from the Shirakawa Exit through the station passage; you do not need to walk outside to the west side just to board the Shinkansen. Check the JR station map for platform elevators.

For a hotel west of the station, use the public passage to the Shinkansen Exit (新幹線口/西口). Shinkansen tickets and seat reservations are separate from the airport bus. If a delay causes you to miss a booked train, check the ticket issuer's change and refund rules; boarding the next train is not automatically guaranteed.

For city-center hotels, choose Sakuramachi or Torichosuji

Sakuramachi: leave the terminal on your hotel's side

Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal · 熊本桜町バスターミナル is separate from Kumamoto Station. Regular airport buses take about 50–55 minutes; special rapid buses take about 45 minutes. Both cost ¥1,400. Compare the hotel's street address with the terminal, rather than relying on its name.

Buses arrive on the first floor. The official map marks red bays 9–13 as drop-off areas; follow the signs for the bay actually used. Bay 6 is an airport-bound departure bay, not a fixed arrival bay.

Use the south side for Shinshigai · 新市街 and Karashimacho · 辛島町 hotels. Use the north side for Kumamoto Castle and the civic hall. The terminal map shows the second-floor concourse and elevators.

Torichosuji: the airport bus stop is not the tram platform

For hotels near Torichosuji · 通町筋, get off at that bus stop. The regular bus takes about 50 minutes and the special rapid bus about 40 minutes; both cost ¥1,400. The sidewalk bus stop and the tram stop in the roadway are separate boarding places.

Continue toward Shimotori · 下通 or Kamitori · 上通 according to your hotel address. Check the property's entrance instructions if its door is on a side street. Walking time depends on the actual hotel; use its address in the directions link.

The Higo-Ozu route costs ¥760, with a transfer and a separate train wait

Take the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu Station · 肥後大津駅, then a JR Hohi Main Line · 豊肥本線 local train toward Kumamoto. The liner costs ¥200 and takes about 15 minutes. The train costs ¥560 and takes about 40 minutes. The ¥760 total excludes waiting, transferring and any onward city trip. This cheaper route is not necessarily faster than the direct bus.

  1. Buy a liner ticket at the indoor machine beside first-floor Exit C. Since September 11, 2026, tickets must be purchased before boarding for both cash and cashless payments.
  2. Go to bay 6 and look for Airport Liner / Higo-Ozu Station (空港ライナー/肥後大津駅). The service runs daily without reservations; boarding is first come, first served.
  3. Get off on the south side of Higo-Ozu Station and enter through the south entrance. For a later return to the airport, the liner ticket machine is in the vending-machine area beside the south-side stop.
  4. Buy your JR ticket and follow signs for the Hohi Main Line toward Kumamoto (豊肥本線 熊本方面), not Aso or Miyaji. Check the platform on the departure board.
  5. At Kumamoto Station, transfer to the appropriate JR train or leave through the exit nearest your hotel. City-center hotels may require another tram ride or walk, so ¥760 is not necessarily your door-to-door total.

The liner operator is Oaso Ozu Taxi · 大阿蘇大津タクシー: 096-293-3355. If a vehicle is full, you may need to wait about 10–15 minutes. Small vehicles are also used, so large bags are not guaranteed to fit. Contact the operator by the previous day for wheelchair travel.

For Kumamoto Castle, walk from Sakuramachi to the south ticket office

Kumamoto Castle · 熊本城 is not an airport bus stop. Take the bus to Sakuramachi, leave on the north side, and continue through Sakuranobaba Josaien · 桜の馬場城彩苑 to the South Ticket Office (南口券売所). Use that entrance in your walking directions, not the castle tower pin at the center of the grounds.

The official free shuttle links Josaien, the South Entrance and Ninomaru Parking Lot. It runs about every 10–15 minutes from 9:00 to 17:00, with the final departure from Ninomaru. Check the castle access map for stops and temporary changes.

Restoration continues around the special public viewing area and walkway. On weekdays, entry and exit use the south side; a north entrance may also be available on weekends and holidays, subject to construction restrictions. From September through June, hours are 9:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:00 and last tower entry at 16:30. Separate July–August extended hours do not apply to a fall visit.

The September 18, 2026 notice distinguishes resumed castle viewing from the temporary closure of Wakuwakuza. Do not assume all nearby facilities are open. Wheeled luggage is not permitted in the tower, and the paid area has no large luggage lockers. Leave suitcases at your hotel or check storage outside the paid grounds before arriving.

For Suizenji Jojuen, take the regular bus and walk to the main gate

For Suizenji Jojuen · 水前寺成趣園, board the regular airport limousine bus at bay 4. Get off at Suizenji-koen-mae (水前寺公園前), then walk about five minutes to the garden's main gate. The bus ride takes about 35 minutes and costs ¥1,000. The special rapid bus does not stop here.

From the stop, continue along the north-side sidewalk toward the garden approach and main entrance (正門). The official garden map marks the main gate as number 15. The north approach at number 18 is not the general visitor entrance.

Garden hours are 8:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. For an afternoon arrival, allow for baggage claim, waiting for the bus and the final walk before deciding whether a visit is practical.

By tram from Kumamoto Station or Torichosuji

At Kumamoto Station, the tram platform is separate from bus arrival bay 8. Take line A toward Kengunmachi (健軍町), get off at Suizenji-koen (水前寺公園), and walk about five minutes to the main gate. From Torichosuji, both lines A and B in the Kengunmachi direction serve this stop.

The adult tram fare is ¥200, separate from the airport bus. Normally, board through a middle or rear door and pay when leaving through the front. Follow vehicle signs because low-floor trams have different door layouts. Prepare exact cash, or use a supported nationwide transit IC card such as Suica or PASMO. Tram payment rules do not apply to Sanko airport buses.

If the 22:00 Airport Liner bus departs on time, there is still time until the last JR train, but this does not guarantee a connection, including waiting for a full car, flight delay, or rail suspension. The operator's table advises that the liner may not be able to respond if the last flight is late. Do not confuse the direction with the last 20:00 bus from Higo-Ozu Station → Airport.

Sanko links only the final airport departure to the final arriving flight, with limits on how it handles major delays. This is not a promise to wait indefinitely for every domestic or international arrival. After leaving the arrival hall, ask the staff or operator whether the remaining buses are actually running.

For Shinkansen transfers, check the desired date and last train separately on JR. The arrival time at Kumamoto Station above does not indicate a Shinkansen connection. If you missed the last public transportation, inform them of the check-in deadline at your accommodation and check the response conditions for airport taxis or already reserved vehicles.

For late arrivals, check the taxi total and actual vehicle

Go to the taxi stand on the first floor of the airport's official floor guide and show the Japanese address of your accommodation. You don't need a bus ticket. You can inquire about dispatch and reservation availability at the Kumamoto City Taxi Association at 096-365-6633, which is provided by the airport. 096-365-6633

Highway tolls are not included in the above amount. This is an estimate that varies depending on traffic, hotel address, and vehicle type, and is not a flat rate product. The airport fare table does not establish whether a late-night surcharge is included. Ask the taxi operator for the total, including any night surcharge.

Check the night surcharge, waiting, luggage charges, payment method, and luggage limit when dispatching a vehicle.

Reservation of vehicle is based on quote including airport and hotel address.

The nearMe Kumamoto Airport service connected to the airport includes Kumamoto City in its operating area, and provides web reservations and credit card advance payment up to 1 hour before boarding. When using for the first time, membership registration is required.

Distinguish between shared ride options and exclusive use, and enter the date, hotel address, number of people, suitcase, and flight to check the actual available quote.

Even if you send a reservation, it does not confirm the dispatch. Official information explains that you will be notified by email of availability up to five hours before pickup, and that same-day reservations will be notified within 30 minutes. Please follow the boarding location and vehicle number in the vehicle information email.

In case of flight delay, you must check the confirmation email and your booking's contact, waiting, change and cancellation rules. The fact that you can apply 1 hour in advance does not guarantee securing a vehicle after the last public service or free cancellation.

For rental cars, check reception and pickup at the Sorayoka Visitor Center.

There is a rental car counter at Sorayoka Visitor Center. From the arrival lobby, follow the building directions to the center, provide the name of the person making the reservation, and confirm the company pickup and shuttle and vehicle pickup procedures.

For companies without a counter, follow the contact/transfer method on the reservation confirmation.

Airport official counter reception is usually from 9:00 to 18:00, and Toyota's is from 8:00 to 20:00, but each office's hours are different. If your flight is late, please contact the reservation office.

After picking up the car, enter the parking lot entrance of a city hotel as the navigation destination and calculate insurance, fuel, toll, and parking fees in addition to the rental fee. Please check with the company in advance whether you have valid driving qualification documents in Japan.

During typhoons and heavy rain, check the actual notices for each transportation method.

A severe-weather forecast alone does not establish that a service is canceled. If you arrive late, have a lot of luggage, or rain, check the remaining distance from the drop-off point to the hotel entrance, and if walking is difficult, compare taxis to the accommodation address. We do not guarantee surrounding safety or passage on all roads.

Official transportation information/reservation link

The following is the operator's official purchase and reservation information and is not an affiliate link. Bus operation information, reserved vehicles, and rental cars are categorized. The Aso sightseeing tour or Kumamoto Castle admission ticket does not include transportation from the airport to the city center. Don't assume that your rail pass includes the liner or airport bus.

Kumamoto Airport transfer, frequently asked questions

How do I get from Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station?

Take the regular airport limousine bus from bay 4 to Kumamoto-ekimae (熊本駅前). The adult one-way fare is ¥1,400 and the ride takes about 60–65 minutes. Arrival bay 8 is near the east-side Shirakawa Exit. The special rapid bus ends at Sakuramachi and does not serve the station.

Which stop should I use for a city-center hotel?

Choose Torichosuji for a hotel near 通町筋, or Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal for a hotel near 熊本桜町バスターミナル. Both regular and special rapid airport buses cost ¥1,400. Compare your hotel's actual address with the stops instead of riding to Kumamoto Station and back.

Do I need to reserve the airport bus?

The city-bound airport limousine and the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu run without seat reservations. Boarding is first come, first served. Buying a ticket does not secure a seat. Check the regular and special rapid bus stops before boarding.

How do I pay for the bus?

For the airport limousine, buy a ticket at the machine beside the first-floor stops, or use the supported onboard cash, contactless bank-card or Kumamon IC payment method. Sanko buses do not accept nationwide transit IC cards such as Suica and PASMO. The Airport Liner uses a separate ¥200 advance ticket, bought at the indoor machine beside Exit C with cash, credit card or transit IC card.

How do I travel through Higo-Ozu Station?

Take the Airport Liner from bay 6 to the south side of Higo-Ozu Station, then a JR Hohi Main Line local train toward Kumamoto. The liner costs ¥200 and takes about 15 minutes; JR costs ¥560 and takes about 40 minutes. The ¥760 total excludes the transfer, train wait and onward travel from Kumamoto Station. The liner has charged ¥200 since July 1, 2026.

Is there a direct train or subway from the airport?

No rail or subway service currently runs from the airport terminal. For JR, take the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu first. A proposed airport railway is not an operating transport option.

Can I bring a large suitcase?

Airport limousine luggage space varies by vehicle. The Airport Liner also uses small vehicles, so ask its operator about large or multiple bags. Contact the liner operator by the previous day for wheelchair travel. Wheeled luggage is not permitted inside Kumamoto Castle's tower.

How do I reach Kumamoto Castle?

Get off at Sakuramachi, leave on the north side and walk through Sakuranobaba Josaien to the castle's South Ticket Office. A free shuttle also links Josaien and the South Entrance. On weekdays the viewing route uses the south entrance; check official notices for construction restrictions. Castle admission is separate from the airport bus fare.

Which bus serves Suizenji Jojuen?

Board the regular airport limousine at airport bay 4, get off at Suizenji-koen-mae (水前寺公園前), and walk about five minutes to the main gate. The bus costs ¥1,000 and takes about 35 minutes. Special rapid buses skip this stop. From the city, trams toward Kengunmachi serve Suizenji-koen, also about a five-minute walk from the gate.

What happens if a delayed flight causes me to miss the last bus?

The regular airport limousine's last scheduled departure is 21:30 on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays/holidays. The operator links only the final bus with the final arriving flight and limits its response to major delays; unlimited waiting is not promised. The last liner at 22:00 and JR train from Higo-Ozu at 22:44 are separate services, with no guaranteed connection. If public transport has ended, check the official taxi stand or a confirmed reserved vehicle.

Where can I check service disruptions?

Check your airline's flight notices, the airport's transport information, Sanko Bus notices and live stop search, Airport Liner notices and JR Kyushu service information. Use the Kumamoto City Transportation Bureau for tram notices. Weather forecasts alone do not confirm a cancellation.
