Where should I stay in Aizu for a Fukushima trip?

Choose Aizuwakamatsu for a red-tiled castle and a samurai residence. City sights also include a pond and medicinal-plant garden, plus Nanukamachi’s old buildings and shops. For rail outings to Ouchi-juku or Kitakata, look near the station. For city visits, check the loop-bus stop near your accommodation. A Yunokami Onsen stay requires separate accommodation access and next-day travel arrangements.

Castle exhibitions, garden or old street: what interests you first?

Tsurugajo offers red tiles and history exhibitions inside the keep; Oyakuen has a pond and medicinal-plant garden. Explore the reconstructed samurai residence for historic living spaces or walk Nanukamachi for old buildings and shops. To add Kitakata ramen or Ouchi-juku, check trains and regional buses separately from city loop buses.

Itineraries by trip length

All eight core courses return to the same Aizuwakamatsu accommodation. Decide first whether to stay with city sights or give a day to Kitakata lunch or Ouchi-juku. These start from a different base than stays in Fukushima city or Iwaki.

2 days / 1 night

A gives the keep’s exhibitions and garden a day each; B visits the samurai residence and Nanukamachi Street. Choose castle and garden visits or historic living spaces and shop walks.

3 days / 2 nights

A uses the middle day for Ouchi-juku; B uses it for Kitakata lunch. A needs connections between trains and Saruyu-go; B uses JR for the outing and visits the samurai residence on the final day.

4 days / 3 nights

A visits Ouchi-juku and Kitakata on separate days; B skips Ouchi-juku for more time at castle, garden, street and residence. For both outings in A, choose return services separately for each day.

5 days / 4 nights

A combines castle and garden on one day to give Ouchi-juku and Kitakata a day each. B skips Ouchi-juku and visits one place a day. Both end with the samurai residence; check that departure leaves time afterwards.

Accommodation and transport bases

Around Aizuwakamatsu Station

Stay near Aizuwakamatsu Station for separate outings to Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. Kitakata is a separate city north of Aizu; Ouchi-juku is a village in Shimogo to the south. Check the walk from your accommodation to the station.

Central Aizu

Consider central Aizu accommodation for castle, garden and exhibition visits. First check the nearest loop-bus stop and direction for your return. Fukushima city and Iwaki are in other parts of the prefecture; staying there changes these journeys. Check whether meals are included when booking accommodation.

Yunokami Onsen

Consider Yunokami Onsen if a hot-spring stay is the focus of your trip. Check your accommodation’s station access, shuttle and meal conditions. After Ouchi-juku, head to your accommodation instead of returning to Aizuwakamatsu, then arrange your next day’s departure separately.

Transport and meal planning

City day passes and the Ouchi-juku combined ticket cover different journeys

Haikara-san and Akabe cost JPY 250 per adult ride or JPY 700 for a day pass. Compare the pass with JPY 750 for three rides on one day. A single day pass cannot cover two rides on each of two days in a one-night trip.

The Ouchi-juku combined ticket includes one Nishi-Wakamatsu–Yunokami-Onsen return rail journey and two days of unlimited Saruyu-go travel. Starting at Aizuwakamatsu adds JPY 200 outside the covered area in each direction, totalling JPY 2,600 per adult. It does not also cover city loop buses or JR to Kitakata. If changing to a hot-spring stay, arrange next-day return services and accommodation connections separately.

Do not subtract these costs based only on another regional pass’s name. Compare actual rail and bus coverage, valid dates and seat charges first. For the Aizu Gurutto Card, check official rail and bus coverage and facility-discount conditions separately. Course subtotals do not apply Gurutto Card discounts.

Kitakata return tickets and your return train

Two ordinary adult paper rail tickets of JPY 350 to and from Kitakata, totalling JPY 700, are included in course subtotals. Before departure, check both directions for your travel date and choose a return train leaving time for lunch and the walk back to the station.

Choose Kitakata lunch and Ouchi-juku meals separately

The Kitakata day allows time for a ramen meal and return travel. Raimu’s main restaurant is number 19 on the official ramen map and lists 11:00–21:00, last orders 20:45. Visit after 11:00 and check that day’s menu, prices and temporary closures. Allow time to walk from the station, queue and return. If that leaves too little time for your return train, eat after returning to Aizu.

Ouchi-juku shop opening days vary. The tourism association says many shops open around 09:00–16:00, not that the entire village opens and closes together. Check your chosen restaurant in the shop calendar and eat in time for your return Saruyu-go service. Ramen and village meals are excluded from course subtotals.

Castle exhibitions and garden in the city

Visit Tsurugajo for exhibitions inside the keep and Oyakuen for garden walks. Some courses combine them, but choose separate days for longer exhibition visits. From city accommodation, match loop-bus stops and directions to your journey.

Nanukamachi for city walks, Kitakata for a ramen outing

Explore old buildings and shops in Aizu’s Nanukamachi Street. Kitakata ramen requires a JR journey to another city. Choose a restaurant on the ramen map and check opening days and your return train together.

Give Ouchi-juku a day with return connections

Ouchi-juku is a nearby village of thatched houses and shops. Change to Saruyu-go at Yunokami-Onsen, and plan a visit day around return connections rather than squeezing it between city walks. Changing to hot-spring accommodation also changes access and meal conditions.

From Aizuwakamatsu Station to the castle

Take a loop bus from Aizuwakamatsu Station to Tsurugajo-iriguchi and walk about five minutes. Haikara-san and Akabe circle in different directions. For your accommodation journey afterwards, check the destination direction in your date’s timetable rather than choosing by bus name alone.

From Aizu to Kitakata lunch

Choose a JR Ban-etsu West Line train towards Kitakata and Niitsu from Aizuwakamatsu. After eating, return from Kitakata towards Aizuwakamatsu and Koriyama. Choose the return service first. Allow time to walk between station and restaurant and queue, and check shop closures.

From Aizu to Ouchi-juku

Take the Aizu Railway to Yunokami-Onsen, then change to Saruyu-go. Choose rail and bus connections in both directions for your date and check Saruyu-go’s priority for bookings made by the previous day. From another city, select Aizuwakamatsu as your arrival point in the transport guide, then connect with this return outing.

How many loop-bus rides will you take that day?

Adult city loop-bus fares are JPY 250 per ride or JPY 700 for a day pass. Three separate fares on one day total JPY 750, JPY 50 more than the pass. Compare rides per day; this ticket does not cover JR or Ouchi-juku travel.

Kitakata and Ouchi-juku costs differ

Ordinary adult paper JR tickets to Kitakata cost JPY 350 each way under the current fare rules; two tickets totalling JPY 700 are included in course costs. The JPY 2,200 Ouchi-juku ticket excludes Aizuwakamatsu–Nishi-Wakamatsu, so adding JPY 200 each way gives JPY 2,600 per adult. Meals, accommodation and additional facility admission are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to move to Yunokami Onsen accommodation to visit Ouchi-juku?

You can make a return outing from Aizuwakamatsu by train and Saruyu-go. Consider Yunokami Onsen for a hot-spring stay, but arrange accommodation access, shuttle, meals, luggage transport and next-day departure separately. The Aizu return itinerary’s costs do not include hot-spring accommodation.
