Where should you stay in Aizu for a Fukushima trip?

Choose Aizu-Wakamatsu for the red-tiled castle and samurai homes. City sights also include a garden with a pond and medicinal plants, and Nanukamachi’s old buildings and shops. For rail outings, consider hotels near the station; for city visits, check loop-bus stops near your hotel. Yunokami Onsen stays require separate hotel access and next-day travel planning.

Castle exhibitions, gardens or old streets first?

See Tsuruga’s red tiles and learn history in the keep’s exhibitions, or explore Oyakuen’s pond and medicinal plants. Visit Bukeyashiki’s reconstructed samurai living spaces, or Nanukamachi’s old buildings and shops. For Kitakata ramen or Ouchi-juku, check trains and local buses separately from city loops.

Itineraries by trip length

All eight basic itineraries return to the same Aizu-Wakamatsu hotel. Decide first between city-only visits, Kitakata lunch and an Ouchi-juku day. Their starting point differs from stays in Fukushima city or Iwaki.

1 night, 2 days

Itinerary A gives the keep and garden a day each; B visits the residence and Nanukamachi. Choose between castle and garden visits, or old living spaces and shop streets.

2 nights, 3 days

Itinerary A spends the middle day in Ouchi-juku; B uses it for Kitakata lunch. A needs train and Saruyu-go connections; B returns by JR and visits the residence on the final day.

3 nights, 4 days

A visits Ouchi-juku and Kitakata on different days. B omits Ouchi-juku for more castle, garden, street and residence time. For both outings, choose return services separately for each date in A.

4 nights, 5 days

Itinerary A combines the castle and garden on one day, then gives Ouchi-juku and Kitakata a day each. B omits Ouchi-juku and visits one destination daily. Both visit the residence on departure day; check that you have time to leave afterwards.

Where to stay and travel from

Around Aizu-Wakamatsu Station

Stay near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station for separate Ouchi-juku and Kitakata outings. Kitakata is a separate city north of Aizu; Ouchi-juku is a village in Shimogo to the south. Check the walk from your hotel to the station.

Aizu city area

Consider a city-area hotel for castle, garden and exhibition visits. First check the nearby loop-bus stop and return direction. Fukushima city and Iwaki are separate areas; staying there changes these itineraries. Check meal inclusions when booking.

Yunokami Onsen

Consider Yunokami Onsen if a hot-spring stay is central to your trip. Check station-to-hotel access, transfers and meal conditions with each hotel. Staying here after Ouchi-juku means travelling to your hotel instead of returning to Aizu-Wakamatsu; choose next-day departure transport separately.

Transport and meal planning

City day passes and Ouchi-juku combined tickets cover different sections

Haikara-san/Akabe cost JPY 250 per adult ride or JPY 700 per day. Three rides on one day can be compared with JPY 750 ordinary fares; one day pass cannot cover two rides on each of two days.

Ouchi-juku’s combined ticket covers one Nishi-Wakamatsu–Yunokami rail return and two days’ unlimited Saruyu-go. Starting at Aizu-Wakamatsu adds JPY 200 outside-area fare in each direction, JPY 2,600 adult total. It does not include all city loops or Kitakata JR. For a hot-spring stay, arrange next-day returns and hotel access separately.

Do not subtract these costs solely because another regional pass has a similar name. Check actual rail/bus coverage, validity and seat fees first. For Aizu Gurutto Card, check covered sections and facility-discount conditions officially. These itinerary subtotals do not use Gurutto Card discounts.

Kitakata return tickets and the return train

Two ordinary adult Kitakata JR paper fares at JPY 350 each, JPY 700 return, are included in subtotals. Before leaving, check both directions for your date and choose a return allowing meals and station walking first.

Choose Kitakata lunch separately from Ouchi-juku meals

The Kitakata day allows a ramen meal and return travel. Raimu’s main branch is official ramen-map number 19 and lists 11:00–21:00, last orders 20:45. Visit after 11:00 and check menus, prices and temporary closures. Allow restaurant walks, queues and station return. If the train is difficult to catch, eat after returning to Aizu.

Ouchi-juku shop opening dates differ. Tourism guidance says many shops open around 09:00–16:00, not that the whole village opens and closes together. Check your restaurant’s shop calendar and eat around the return Saruyu-go time. Ramen and village meals are excluded from subtotals.

Castle exhibitions and gardens in the city

Tsuruga offers keep exhibitions; Oyakuen offers garden visits. Some routes combine them, but choose separate days for longer exhibitions. Match loop direction and stops to travel from city hotels.

Nanukamachi city walks and Kitakata ramen outings

Explore Aizu’s old buildings and shops in Nanukamachi. Kitakata ramen requires JR travel to another city. Choose a shop from the ramen map and check its opening days alongside the return train.

A day for Ouchi-juku return connections

Ouchi-juku is a nearby village with thatched houses and shops. Change at Yunokami Onsen to Saruyu-go and give the village a dedicated visit with return connections. A hot-spring stay also changes hotel travel and meal conditions.

Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to the castle

Take the loop bus to Tsurugajo-Iriguchi and walk about five minutes. Haikara-san and Akabe run in different loop directions. For the return to your hotel, check the destination direction in your date’s timetable rather than choosing by bus name alone.

Aizu to Kitakata lunch

Choose a Kitakata/Niitsu-bound JR Ban-etsu West Line train from Aizu-Wakamatsu. Return from Kitakata towards Aizu-Wakamatsu/Koriyama after lunch. Choose the return first, allowing restaurant walks, queues and closures.

How many loop-bus rides on the same day?

Adult loop-bus fares are JPY 250 per ride or JPY 700 for a day pass. Three individual rides cost JPY 750, or JPY 50 more than the pass. Compare each day’s use; the pass does not cover JR or Ouchi-juku travel.

Kitakata and Ouchi-juku have different calculations

Ordinary adult Kitakata JR paper tickets are JPY 350 one-way under current fare rules; two total JPY 700, included in itinerary costs. Ouchi-juku’s JPY 2,200 ticket excludes Aizu-Wakamatsu–Nishi-Wakamatsu; adding JPY 200 each way gives JPY 2,600. Meals, hotels and extra facility admissions are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Must I move my hotel to Yunokami Onsen to visit Ouchi-juku?

You can return from Aizu-Wakamatsu using trains and Saruyu-go. For a hot-spring stay, consider Yunokami Onsen but arrange hotel access, transfers, meals, luggage and next-day departure separately. Aizu return-route costs exclude hot-spring accommodation.
