Where should I stay in Aizu for a Fukushima trip?

Choose Aizu-Wakamatsu as a base for a red-tiled castle and former samurai homes. In the city, you can also visit a garden with a pond and medicinal plants and explore Nanukamachi's older buildings and shops. For train trips to Ouchi-juku or Kitakata, consider the station area. For city sights, check the loop-bus stop near your hotel. A Yunokami Onsen stay requires separate planning for hotel access and the next day's transportation.

Castle exhibits, garden, or old streets first?

At Tsurugajo, see red roof tiles and history exhibits inside the keep. Oyakuen has a pond and medicinal plant garden. Explore the reconstructed samurai residence to see former living spaces, or walk Nanukamachi for older buildings and shops. To add Kitakata ramen or Ouchi-juku, check trains and regional buses separately from city loop buses.

Itineraries by trip length

All eight base itineraries return to the same Aizu-Wakamatsu hotel. First decide whether to focus on city sights or spend a day on Kitakata lunch or Ouchi-juku. These routes start from a different base than stays in Fukushima City or Iwaki.

2 days, 1 night

Route A gives a separate day each to the keep exhibits and garden; B visits the samurai residence and Nanukamachi Street. Choose between castle and garden visits or former living spaces and shop browsing.

3 days, 2 nights

Route A spends the middle day in Ouchi-juku, while B uses it for Kitakata lunch. A needs train and Saruyugo connections. B makes a JR round trip and visits the samurai residence on the final day.

4 days, 3 nights

Route A visits Ouchi-juku and Kitakata on separate days. B skips Ouchi-juku and spends more time on the castle, garden, street, and residence. For both day trips, choose separate round-trip services for each visit day in A.

5 days, 4 nights

Route A combines castle and garden visits on one day, with a day each for Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. B skips Ouchi-juku and visits one main place per day. Both choose the samurai residence on the final day, so check that you have time to depart after viewing.

Where to stay and start your day trips

Near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station

A base near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station is convenient for separate trips to Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. Kitakata is a separate city north of Aizu, while Ouchi-juku is a village in Shimogo to the south. Check the route between your hotel and the station too.

Central Aizu

Consider central Aizu for a trip focused on the castle, garden, and exhibits. First check your hotel's nearest loop-bus stop and the direction for your return. Fukushima City and Iwaki are separate from Aizu; staying there changes the routes in these itineraries. Check whether meals are included when booking.

Yunokami Onsen

Consider Yunokami Onsen if a hot spring stay is central to your trip. Check each hotel's route from the station, pickup arrangements, and meal conditions. If you stay here after Ouchi-juku, go to your hotel instead of returning to Aizu-Wakamatsu, and plan the next day's departure separately.

Transportation and meal planning

The city one-day ticket and Ouchi-juku combined ticket cover different routes

Haikarasan and Akabe cost ¥250 per adult ride, or ¥700 for a one-day ticket. Three rides on the same day can be compared with ¥750 in single fares. A single one-day ticket cannot cover a one-night itinerary with two rides on each of two days.

The Ouchi-juku combined ticket includes one railway round trip between Nishi-Wakamatsu and Yunokami Onsen plus two days of unlimited Saruyugo use. A route starting at Aizu-Wakamatsu adds ¥200 each way outside the coverage area, for an adult total of ¥2,600. It does not cover the city loop buses and JR to Kitakata as well. If you switch to a hot spring stay, arrange the next day's return and hotel connection separately.

When comparing other regional passes, check actual train and bus coverage, valid days, and seat fees before subtracting costs. For the Aizu Gurutto Card, check the official railway and bus coverage and facility-discount conditions separately. The trip-length itinerary subtotals apply no Gurutto Card discount.

Kitakata round-trip tickets and your return train

The itinerary subtotals include ¥700 for two adult regular-train paper tickets at ¥350 one way to and from Kitakata. Before departure, check both directions for your travel date and choose a return train that leaves enough time for your meal and walk back to the station.

Plan Kitakata lunch and Ouchi-juku meals separately

The Kitakata day allows time for one ramen meal and the round trip. Raimu's Kitakata main restaurant is number 19 on the official ramen map. Official hours are 11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., with last order at 8:45 p.m. Visit after 11:00 a.m. and check that day's menu, prices, and temporary closures. Allow time to walk from the station, wait, and return. If your return train leaves too little time, eat after returning to Aizu instead.

Ouchi-juku shops have different operating days. The tourism association says many are open around 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; that does not mean the entire village opens and closes together. Check your chosen restaurant's shop calendar and plan the meal around your return Saruyugo bus. Ramen and village meals are outside the itinerary subtotals.

Castle exhibits and garden in the city

Tsurugajo offers keep exhibits, while Oyakuen is a garden visit. Some itineraries combine them, but choose separate days if you want longer in the exhibits. From a city hotel, match loop-bus stops and directions.

Nanukamachi city walk or Kitakata ramen trip

Nanukamachi Street has older buildings and shops in central Aizu. For ramen in Kitakata, take JR to another city. Choose a restaurant from the ramen map and check both its operating day and your return train.

Allow a day for Ouchi-juku and its round-trip connections

Ouchi-juku is a nearby village with thatched houses and shops. The Saruyugo transfer at Yunokami Onsen makes it better suited to a planned day trip than a short addition between city walks. Switching to a hot spring stay also changes hotel access and meal conditions.

Take a loop bus from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to Tsurugajo Iriguchi, then walk about five minutes. Haikarasan and Akabe loop in different directions. After viewing, check the direction toward your hotel in your date's timetable rather than relying on the bus name alone.

From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, choose a JR Banetsu West Line train toward Kitakata/Niitsu. After your meal, return from Kitakata toward Aizu-Wakamatsu/Koriyama. Choose your return first, allowing for the station-to-restaurant walk, waiting, and shop closures.

Aizu to Ouchi-juku

Take Aizu Railway to Yunokami Onsen, then transfer to Saruyugo. Match trains and buses in both directions for your visit date and check the bus's priority for reservations made by the previous day. Compare city buses, JR, and the Ouchi-juku combined ticket separately

How many loop-bus rides will you take on the same day?

Adult city loop-bus fare is ¥250 per ride, or ¥700 for a one-day ticket. Three single rides on the same day cost ¥750, which is ¥50 more than the daily ticket. Compare the number of rides per day; this ticket does not also cover JR or the trip to Ouchi-juku.

Kitakata and Ouchi-juku use different cost calculations

Under the current fare rules, an adult regular JR train paper ticket to Kitakata costs ¥350 one way. Two tickets totaling ¥700 are included in the itinerary costs. The ¥2,200 Ouchi-juku combined ticket excludes Aizu-Wakamatsu–Nishi-Wakamatsu, so add ¥200 each way for ¥2,600 total. Meals, lodging, and additional facility admission are separate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to move to Yunokami Onsen to visit Ouchi-juku?

You can make a round trip from Aizu-Wakamatsu by train and Saruyugo. For a hot spring stay, consider Yunokami Onsen, but arrange hotel access, pickups, meals, luggage movement, and the next day's departure separately. The Aizu round-trip itinerary costs do not include hot spring lodging.
