How should I divide Aizu and day trips over five days?
To see the city and both nearby destinations, combine the castle and garden on one day and give a day each to Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. For a slower pace with one main stop per day, skip Ouchi-juku and spread out city visits. The base plan returns to the same Aizu hotel; switching to one night in Yunokami Onsen changes train and bus connections and costs.
Choose an itinerary for 5 days, 4 nights
Central Aizu, Ouchi-juku, and Kitakata
Combine the castle and garden on one day, leaving a separate day each for Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. Choose a final-day departure that allows a residence visit, or move the visit to an earlier day.

Day 1 — Nanukamachi → hotel
Explore Nanukamachi's older buildings and shops that are open. This example allows 60–90 minutes for walking. Shops have different hours, so an early visit may be limited to building exteriors. The ¥500 for two bus rides excludes meals, shopping, paid exhibits, and activities. After your walk, return to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and eat nearby or near your hotel. Set your time on the street around that day's buses.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Nanukamachi Station-front stop
Take Haikarasan from outside the station and get off in front of Nanukamachi Station. Depart in the morning or afternoon to match the opening times of the shops you want to visit.
- Nanukamachi Station-front stop → Nanukamachi Street
Continue from the stop to the street, allowing separate walking time to reach the sightseeing section. Plan 60–90 minutes for building exteriors and open shops. Before shops open, you can only see the exteriors.

- Nanukamachi Station-front Akabe stop → Aizu-Wakamatsu Station

Check individual shops' operating days. In bad weather, shorten your walk and return to the station or hotel.
Day 2 — Castle → lunch → garden → station
Learn Aizu's history inside the keep in the morning, then walk a garden with a pond and medicinal plants. After about 90 minutes at the castle, eat lunch nearby and take the loop bus in the same direction for an afternoon garden walk. Include time for lunch, waiting, and the bus ride. Three bus rides cost ¥750 in single fares, compared with a ¥700 one-day ticket. Adding ¥740 in admission to the two sites gives a partial cost of ¥1,440.
The 90-minute castle visit and 45–60-minute garden visit are examples of how to divide your time. The keep has stairs, and you must move outdoors between the sites. In snow or heavy rain, shorten viewing time and check your return bus first.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Tsurugajo Iriguchi
Take Haikarasan from outside the station and get off at Tsurugajo Iriguchi. Choose a service from your date's weekday or holiday timetable that lets you start the keep visit in the morning. Include the roughly five-minute walk to the castle, about 90 minutes of viewing, lunch, and waiting and riding time for the garden bus.
- Tsurugajo Iriguchi → Tsurugajo Castle → same bus stop
Walk about five minutes from the stop to the castle, as indicated in official directions, and spend about 90 minutes on the keep exhibits and surroundings. Eat lunch nearby afterward, then return to the same stop for your next bus.

After lunch, take Haikarasan continuing in the same loop direction and get off at Oyakuen. Choose a bus from your date's timetable that allows a 45–60-minute afternoon visit finishing before 5:00 p.m.
- Oyakuen bus stop → Oyakuen → same bus stop
Go to the entrance, spend 45–60 minutes in the garden, and prepare for the return bus. Viewing ends at 5:00 p.m., with last entry at 4:30 p.m. Arrive earlier than the last entry time for a 45–60-minute visit. If snow or rain makes walking difficult, shorten the visit and adjust costs.

Day 3 — Ouchi-juku round trip
Walk the street lined with thatched houses in Ouchi-juku. Get off the train at Yunokami Onsen Station and transfer to Saruyugo outside the station. Passengers who reserve by the previous day have priority on both outbound and return buses, so inquire ahead about your preferred services. Match trains and buses for your visit date before choosing the round trip.
The ¥2,200 combined discount ticket includes one railway round trip between Nishi-Wakamatsu and Yunokami Onsen plus two days of unlimited Saruyugo use. Starting at Aizu-Wakamatsu adds two ¥200 fares outside the coverage area, for ¥2,600 total. This is for regular trains; special sightseeing-train seat tickets are separate. Buy the combined ticket ahead at the travel desk inside Aizu-Wakamatsu Station or at Yunokami Onsen Station's counter. Yunokami Onsen's staffed counter operates 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Allow time for ticket purchase and moving to your boarding point, and check for temporary counter changes before departure.
- Aizu-Wakamatsu Station → Yunokami Onsen Station
Take a regular train toward Aizu Railway and get off at Yunokami Onsen Station. Exit the ticket gate and go to the Saruyugo boarding point outside. Distinguish arrival and departure times in your visit date's railway timetable and choose a train leaving enough time to transfer to the bus.
- Outside Yunokami Onsen Station → Ouchi-juku entrance
Board Ouchi-juku-bound Saruyugo outside the station and get off at Ouchi-juku's entrance. Passengers reserving by the previous day have priority, so inquire ahead about your desired round trip.

Day 4 — Kitakata lunch → return to Aizu
Spend the day on one ramen meal in Kitakata and return to the same Aizu hotel. Check JR services in both directions for your date and choose your post-meal return first. The ¥700 regular-train round trip is included in the itinerary subtotal; meals are separate.
Raimu's main restaurant is listed as open 11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., with last order at 8:45 p.m. Check that day's menu, prices, and temporary closures. If the line is too long to fit your return train, eat after returning to Aizu.

Explore living spaces in the reconstructed samurai residence. The facility suggests about one hour for a visit, with outdoor movement between exhibits. April–November hours are 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with final exit at 5:30 p.m.; December–March hours are 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with final exit at 5:00 p.m. The day's partial cost is ¥1,500: admission ¥1,000 plus two bus rides totaling ¥500. Getting off the return bus does not mean you can immediately board a long-distance train.

Day 1 — Tsurugajo
See the red-tiled castle up close and learn Aizu's history through exhibits inside the keep. On arrival day, first check how much time remains for your visit. Keep admission closes at 4:30 p.m., and there are stairs inside. Frequently asked questions
Does one night in Yunokami Onsen cost the same as the Aizu round trip?
No. The Ouchi-juku combined ticket is valid for two days, but excludes lodging, meals, station-to-hotel transportation, pickups, and luggage storage. Choose the next day's return within the one-railway-round-trip condition and check your actual hotel and bus connections. Current itinerary subtotals cover sightseeing with a return to Aizu.

Can I visit the samurai residence before an afternoon departure?
Yes, if you have enough time between the return bus to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and your departure train. Allow time to reach the ticket gate and platform, plus a trip to retrieve hotel luggage if needed. For a morning or early-afternoon departure, skipping the residence on the last day works better.
