Where should you stay in Kagawa, and what should you choose first?
Stay in Takamatsu for garden walks and harbour views. The area near Takamatsu Station and port suits rail-and-ferry trips; Kawaramachi suits evening meals and shopping streets. Choose Kotohira to visit the main shrine, or Naoshima's Chichu Art Museum for Monet's paintings and Tadao Ando's architecture. Visit Kotohira and take the island trip by ferry and bus on separate days.
Choose the kind of day you want first
Choose Ritsurin Garden for leisurely garden paths or Tamamo Park for arrival-day castle grounds near the station and harbour. Climb the steps to visit Kotohiragu's main shrine, or visit Yashimāru for mountain-top views of the sea and city. For Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima, book admission before arranging boats and island buses.
Itineraries by trip length
The eight courses let you choose between staying in Takamatsu throughout and spending a night in Kotohira. Choose where to spend a day among gardens, shrine steps, summit views and island art, reducing viewing on arrival and departure days to fit actual transport.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Takamatsu for castle-site and harbour walks on one day and a garden visit on the other, or sleep in Kotohira before climbing to the main shrine. Kotohira requires a final-day return to Takamatsu after descending, with time before departure.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two nights in Takamatsu, using the middle day for Kotohira's steps or Yashima views. Kotohira uses return Kotoden trains; Yashima uses JR then a summit shuttle. Check their different return connections.
4 days / 3 nights
Visit Kotohira and Yashima on separate days, or spend a day at Naoshima's Chichu Art Museum. Both courses stay three nights in Takamatsu; choose the island day around admission and return boat and bus connections.
5 days / 4 nights
Stay three nights in Takamatsu then one in Kotohira to visit the main shrine on the final morning. Alternatively, stay four nights in Takamatsu and visit the gardens, Yashima and Naoshima on separate days, keeping the island off departure day.
Where should I stay?
Near Takamatsu Station and port
In Kagawa · 香川県, the area near Takamatsu Station and port suits JR-to-ferry connections. Kotoden Takamatsu-Chikko Station is also here but is separate from JR Takamatsu Station. Harbour accommodation is not equally close to every boarding point.

Near Kawaramachi
Kawaramachi suits meals in the shopping streets and Kotoden trips around the city and towards Kotohira. On ferry days, travel to the harbour first.
Kotohira
Stay in Kotohira to rest locally after walking the shrine approach rather than rush back to the station. Compare keeping all accommodation in Takamatsu with a separate one-night Kotohira stay.

Who can use the All Shikoku Rail Pass, and where?
For passes issued from 1 October 2026, adult three-day passes cost JPY 12,000 and seven-day passes JPY 20,000; four-day and five-day passes have been discontinued. Check foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor requirements. Eligible trains include JR Shikoku and Kotoden, but Takamatsu–Miyanoura boats, town buses, Yashima summit shuttles and museum admission are excluded.

Compare ordinary tickets first for these itineraries
Adding only eligible adult train fares gives JPY 2,620 for the three-night Kotohira and Yashima course and JPY 500 for the three-night Naoshima course. The four-night course with a Kotohira night totals JPY 2,620; the four-night Takamatsu and Naoshima course totals JPY 1,060. Ordinary tickets cost less for these journeys alone. The Kotohira-stay course uses trains on days two through five, beyond a single three-day pass. For extra destinations, compare actual sections and consecutive validity days again.

Which days for gardens, shrine steps, summit views and island art?
This suggestion divides dates by walking effort and return transport rather than joining all four in one day. Kotohira-stay courses also separate the accommodation move from the main-shrine climb.
Arrival day: Tamamo Park and Takamatsu Port
Start near the station with Tamamo's castle site and moat, then walk the harbour. For a late arrival, check gate hours and move the park to another day if needed. A harbour walk differs from a sailing day.

Ritsurin Garden walks among pines and ponds
Walk paths through Ritsurin's pines and ponds. Use the east gate from Kotoden Ritsurinkoen or the north gate from JR Ritsurinkoen-Kitaguchi; these are different stations. October closing is 17:30. On departure day, allow time after viewing to return to the station.
Kotohira worship and approach-shop walks
Kotohiragu's main shrine needs a 785-step climb. Rest at approach shops on a day trip, or stay locally and climb next morning. The official hour is one way from the first step to the main shrine; descent and rests are extra. Choose around return trains and final-day departure.
Yashima and Naoshima have different return connections
Yashima needs a downward shuttle; Naoshima needs a post-museum shuttle, town bus and ferry. Late Yashimāru opening does not mean buses run equally late. For both places, choose separate days as in the four-night Takamatsu course.

How do I reach attractions from stations and ports?
Set map origins to your booked accommodation address. Do not choose boat and bus connections or museum admission solely from map estimates; compare your date's official timetables and booked slot.
Kotoden Ritsurinkoen → garden east gate
Walk about seven minutes towards the east gate after leaving the train. Ticketing and garden viewing are extra. For the north gate, start from JR Ritsurinkoen-Kitaguchi.
JR Ritsurinkoen-Kitaguchi → garden north gate
Walk about three minutes from the JR station towards the north gate, not from Kotoden Ritsurinkoen. Choose your exit gate and return station beforehand.
Takamatsu-Chikko → Kotohira → shrine approach
Take Kotoden's Kotohira Line to Kotohira, then walk about ten minutes to the approach. This is not the station-to-main-shrine time; add the climb. Choose a return Takamatsu-Chikko train from the official timetable.

JR Yashima → Yashima Sanjo → Yashimāru
Connect to the summit shuttle from JR Yashima. The adult fare is JPY 340 one way or JPY 680 return. The official ten-minute walk starts at the summit tourist car park. After alighting at Yashima Sanjo, walk towards number 11 Yashimāru on the official summit map. Check the leaflet's main entrance and allow walking time. Choose downward buses separately from facility hours.

Takamatsu Port → Miyanoura → Tsutsujiso → Chichu
After the Miyanoura ferry, take the town bus to Tsutsujiso, then the free Chichu shuttle. Return by shuttle, town bus and Takamatsu ferry. Ferries and high-speed boats have different ticket offices; regular boarding is first come, first served. G marks Chichu Ticket Center and shuttle stop on the official access map. Follow the path towards the separately marked museum southwest, allowing the entrance walk and queue extra.

Sanuki udon: choose broth or noodles
For warm broth with noodles, compare kake udon; for a concentrated sauce poured over and mixed through noodles, try bukkake. Kamaage udon is served in its cooking water without a cold-water rinse; dip small portions into sauce as you eat. Compare it if you prefer a softer texture. Broth and toppings vary by shop.
On garden or stair-walking days, leave meal time before trains. On island days, plan meals around museum admission and return boats. Choose a non-island day for visiting several udon shops. Confirm menus, prices, hours and sell-outs with restaurants.
Udon and onward travel
For courses connecting trains with buses or boats, distinguish included ticket sections first. Before a harbour walk, you can consult the original Sunport footage.
Travelling to another city
Choose routes in the transport guide for extra cities outside Kagawa. Budget separately for travel to other prefectures.
All Shikoku pass: eligible trains and extra transport
Eligible Kotoden/JR trains are included, but Naoshima boats, island town buses and Yashima shuttles are extra. Ordinary tickets cost less for these Kagawa courses alone. For extra inter-prefectural JR travel, compare actual sections and consecutive validity days again.

What the Takamatsu Sunport camera shows
Original Takamatsu Sunport footage shows harbour water, piers and part of the waterfront promenade, based on CMS playback on 9 October 2026. It does not show park interiors, museums or island buses; footage alone cannot establish sailings, spare seats or boarding queues. Check Shikoku Kisen operational notices separately.
