Where to stay and what to choose first in Kagawa

Stay in Takamatsu for gardens and harbour scenery. The station/port area suits train and ferry connections; Kawaramachi suits dinners and shopping streets. Choose Kotohira for the main shrine, or Naoshima’s Chichu Art Museum for Monet and Tadao Ando’s architecture. Keep the Kotohira stair climb and island ferry/bus trip on separate days.

First choose the kind of day you want

Choose Ritsurin for an unhurried garden walk, Tamamo for a station/port-side castle site on arrival, Kotohira-gu for a stair-climbing shrine visit, or Yashimaru for mountain sea/city views. For Chichu on Naoshima, reserve entry before connecting boats and island buses.

Courses by trip length

The eight courses compare consecutive Takamatsu stays with a Kotohira night. Choose a day for the garden, steps, summit or museum, reducing arrival/departure-day sightseeing around actual services.

1 night, 2 days

Spend one Takamatsu night for separate castle/harbour and garden days, or stay in Kotohira and climb the next day. The Kotohira course needs final-day descent and return to Takamatsu before departure.

2 nights, 3 days

Keep two Takamatsu nights and give the middle day to Kotohira’s steps or Yashima’s views. Kotohira uses return Kotoden trains; Yashima uses JR plus summit shuttles. Check the different returns.

3 nights, 4 days

Visit Kotohira/Yashima on separate days or spend a day at Chichu on Naoshima. Both courses stay three nights in Takamatsu; choose the island date around entry and return connections.

4 nights, 5 days

Three Takamatsu nights followed by one in Kotohira give a final-morning shrine visit. Four Takamatsu nights separate garden, Yashima and Naoshima days and exclude an island visit on departure day.

Where should you book accommodation?

Near Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu Port

The station/port area in Kagawa Prefecture (香川県) suits JR and ferry connections. Kotoden Takamatsu-Chikko Station is also here but is separate from JR Takamatsu Station. A harbour-area hotel does not have the same walking distance to every boat’s boarding point.

Near Kawaramachi

Kawaramachi suits shopping-street meals and Kotoden journeys within the city or towards Kotohira. On ferry days, travel to the port first.

Kotohira

Choose Kotohira for a night in the neighbourhood after the shrine approach, rather than rushing back to the station. Compare all-Takamatsu stays separately from a course with one Kotohira night.

When choosing trains, ferries and passes

Who can use the All Shikoku Pass, and where?

For issues from 1 October 2026, adult 3-day passes cost JPY 12,000 and 7-day passes JPY 20,000; 4-/5-day passes are discontinued. Check foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor conditions. Eligible trains include JR Shikoku and Kotoden, but Takamatsu–Miyanoura boats, town buses, Yashima summit shuttles and museum admission are excluded.

Compare ordinary tickets first for these courses

Adding only adult pass-eligible train fares gives JPY 2,620 for the 3-night Kotohira/Yashima course, JPY 500 for 3-night Naoshima, JPY 2,620 for the 4-night Kotohira overnight course and JPY 1,060 for the 4-night Takamatsu/Naoshima course. Ordinary tickets cost less for these journeys alone. The Kotohira overnight course uses trains from day two through day five, so one 3-day pass cannot cover every ride. Recompare actual journeys and consecutive use dates when adding other destinations.

Which day for the garden, shrine steps, summit and island?

These suggestions separate days by walking demands and return transport rather than linking all four in one day. Kotohira overnight courses also separate the moving day from the climb.

Tamamo Park and Takamatsu Port on arrival

Start near the station with the castle site/moat, then walk the harbour. If late, check gate opening and move the park to another day. A harbour stroll differs from boarding a boat.

Ritsurin’s pines and ponds

Follow garden paths among pines and ponds. Use the east gate from Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen or north gate from JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi, two separate stations. October closes at 17:30. On departure day, allow the walk back to your station.

Yashima and Naoshima need different return connections

Yashima needs a downhill shuttle; Naoshima connects a museum shuttle, town bus and ferry. Yashimaru’s late opening does not mean equally late return buses. To see both, use separate days such as the four-night Takamatsu course.

How do I reach attractions from stations and ports?

For an accommodation start, set the map origin to your booked address. Do not decide boat/bus connections or museum entry from map estimates alone; compare official date-specific services and your booking.

Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen → garden east gate

Walk about 7 minutes towards the east gate after alighting; ticketing and visiting are extra. For the north gate, start at JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi.

JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi → garden north gate

Walk about 3 minutes from the JR station towards the north gate, not 3 minutes from Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen. Choose your exit gate and return station beforehand too.

Takamatsu-Chikko → Kotohira → shrine approach

Take the Kotoden Kotohira Line to Kotohira and walk about 10 minutes to the approach. This is not station-to-main-shrine time; add the climb. Choose the Takamatsu-Chikko return train from the official timetable too.

Sanuki udon: broth or noodles?

Choose kake udon for noodles in warm broth, or bukkake for a stronger sauce poured over and mixed with noodles. Kamaage serves boiled noodles without a cold-water rinse, in their cooking water, for dipping into sauce; compare it for a softer texture. Broth and toppings vary by restaurant.

Allow a meal before trains on garden/shrine days. On island days, fit meals around museum entry and return boats. Choose a non-island day for several udon shops. Check menus, prices, hours and sell-outs with each restaurant.

Udon and onward travel

On Kotoden/JR journeys connecting buses or boats, first identify pass-covered segments. Before a harbour stroll, you can consult the original Sunport feed.

Onward travel to other cities

Choose routes in the transport guide for destinations outside Kagawa. Budget inter-prefecture travel separately.

Separate All Shikoku train coverage from other transport

Eligible Kotoden/JR trains can use the pass, but Naoshima boats, town buses and Yashima shuttles cost extra. Ordinary tickets are cheaper for these Kagawa courses alone. If adding JR in other prefectures, recompare actual journeys and consecutive dates.

Frequently asked questions

Which base suits a Naoshima day?

Compare the Takamatsu Station/port area for both boats and JR. Kawaramachi stays need port access before boarding. Even harbour hotels differ in distance to ferry/high-speed counters and boarding points; check your booked address to the correct counter.

Does an All Shikoku Pass include Naoshima boats and Yashima shuttles?
