Where should you stay in Kagawa, and what should you see first?

Stay in Takamatsu for garden walks and harbor views. The area around Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu Port works well when connecting trains and boats; Kawaramachi is convenient for dinner and shopping streets. Choose Kotohira to visit the main shrine, or Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima for Monet’s paintings and Tadao Ando’s architecture. Keep Kotohira’s stair climb on a separate day from an island trip by boat and bus.

Choose the kind of day you want

Choose Ritsurin Garden for a leisurely garden walk, or Tamamo Park for castle ruins near the station and port on arrival day. Climb the shrine steps at Kotohiragu, or look over the sea and city from Yashimāru. To visit Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima, reserve an admission time, then coordinate your boat and island buses.

Itineraries by Trip Length

The eight itineraries offer a choice between staying in Takamatsu throughout and spending one night in Kotohira. Decide whether to give a day to gardens, shrine steps, summit views, or an island museum. Shorten arrival-day and departure-day sightseeing to fit your actual transportation.

2 days, 1 night

Spend one night in Takamatsu and see the castle grounds, harbor, and garden on separate days, or stay in Kotohira and climb to the main shrine the next morning. The Kotohira itinerary requires a return to Takamatsu after the descent on your final day, so allow time before your departure.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights in Takamatsu and use the middle day for Kotohira’s shrine steps or Yashima’s views. Kotohira uses Kotoden trains round trip; Yashima uses JR followed by the summit shuttle. Check the return connections for the option you choose.

4 days, 3 nights

Visit Kotohira and Yashima on separate days, or give a full day to Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima. Both itineraries use three nights in Takamatsu. Choose the island visit date around your reservation time and the boat and bus connections back.

5 days, 4 nights

With three nights in Takamatsu followed by one in Kotohira, visit the main shrine on your final morning. With four nights in Takamatsu, visit the garden, Yashima, and Naoshima on separate days; keep the island visit off departure day.

Where Should You Stay?

Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu Port

The area around Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu Port in Kagawa Prefecture · 香川県 is convenient for connecting JR trains and boats. Kotoden’s Takamatsu-Chikko Station is also nearby but is separate from JR Takamatsu Station. A harbor hotel will not necessarily be equally close to every boat’s boarding point.

Who Can Use the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass, and Where?

For passes issued from October 1, 2026, the adult three-day pass costs ¥12,000 and the seven-day pass ¥20,000. Four- and five-day passes have been discontinued. Check the foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor status requirements. The pass covers eligible JR Shikoku and Kotoden trains, but excludes the Takamatsu–Miyanoura boat, town buses, Yashima summit shuttle, and museum admission.

Compare Regular Tickets First for These Itineraries

Adding only adult fares for pass-covered trains gives ¥2,620 for the three-night Kotohira-and-Yashima itinerary and ¥500 for the three-night Naoshima itinerary. The four-night itinerary with one night in Kotohira has ¥2,620 in covered rail fares; the four-night Takamatsu-based Naoshima itinerary has ¥1,060. Regular tickets cost less for these trips alone. The Kotohira overnight itinerary uses trains on days two through five, so one three-day pass cannot cover all those days. If you add other destinations, compare your actual train sections and consecutive travel dates again.

When should you visit the garden, shrine steps, summit, and island?

These suggestions divide the visits by walking effort and round-trip transportation rather than combining all four in a day. The Kotohira overnight itinerary also separates the hotel move from the climb to the main shrine.

Tamamo Park and Takamatsu Port on arrival day

For sights near the station, explore Tamamo Park’s castle grounds and moat, then walk around the harbor. If you arrive late, check whether the gate is open and move the park visit to another day if needed. A harbor walk is a different plan from boarding a boat.

Pines and ponds at Ritsurin Garden

Follow Ritsurin Garden’s paths for views of pines and ponds. Approach the East Gate from Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen Station, or the North Gate from JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi Station. These are separate stations; the garden closes at 5:30 p.m. in October. On departure day, leave time to return to the station after your visit.

Shrine steps and shopping streets in Kotohira

Climb 785 steps to visit Kotohiragu’s main shrine. You can make a day trip with breaks in the shopping street, or stay in Kotohira and climb the next morning. The official estimate of about 1 hour is one way from the first step to the main shrine; add time for the descent and breaks. Choose around your return train and final-day departure.

Different return connections for Yashima and Naoshima

From Yashima, you need a shuttle back down from the summit. After the museum on Naoshima, you need a shuttle, town bus, and ferry. Yashimāru’s evening opening does not mean buses run until the same time. To visit both, use separate days as in the four-night Takamatsu itinerary.

How do you get from the stations and port to the attractions?

If leaving from your hotel, change the map’s starting point to your booked address. Do not choose boat or bus connections or museum admission from map estimates alone. Check the official timetable for your travel date and your reservation time.

Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen Station → East Gate

Walk about 7 minutes from the station toward the East Gate. This is walking time after leaving the train; tickets and garden sightseeing take additional time. For the North Gate, use JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi Station as your starting point.

JR Ritsurin-Koen-Kitaguchi Station → North Gate

Walk about 3 minutes from the JR station toward the North Gate. This does not mean a 3-minute walk from Kotoden Ritsurin-Koen Station. Decide in advance which gate you will exit through and which station you will use afterward.

Takamatsu-Chikko Station → Kotohira Station → shrine approach

Take the Kotoden Kotohira Line to Kotohira Station, then walk about 10 minutes to the shrine approach. The main shrine is not 10 minutes from the station; add time to climb the steps. Choose your return train to Takamatsu-Chikko from the official timetable too.

Sanuki udon: broth, sauce, or softer noodles?

For noodles in warm broth, look for kake udon. For noodles with a concentrated sauce poured over them and mixed in, consider bukkake udon. Kama-age udon is served in its cooking water without rinsing the cooked noodles in cold water; dip small portions into the sauce. It is an option to compare if you prefer a softer texture. Broth flavors and toppings vary by restaurant.

On garden or shrine-step days, allow time to eat before boarding your train. On an island day, plan meals around your museum reservation and boat back. If you want to try several udon shops, choose a day without an island visit. Check menus, prices, hours, and sold-out items with each restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay for a Naoshima day trip?

If you plan to use both boats and JR trains, compare places around Takamatsu Station and Takamatsu Port. From Kawaramachi, you need to travel to the port before boarding. Even hotels near the harbor are not equally close to the ferry and high-speed boat ticket counters and boarding points. Check the route from the address you plan to book to the counter for your boat.

Does the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass cover Naoshima boats and the Yashima shuttle?
