Where should you stay and what should you see in Kochi, Japan?

Stay around Obiyamachi or Ohashidori to combine Kochi Castle's historic buildings with meals at the market. The JR Kochi Station area is convenient for train travel. You can see the Ryoma exhibitions and Katsurahama coast in a day, then visit Nikobuchi's blue waters on another day. Travelling to Nikobuchi by bus also means allowing for the walk from the stop and the return service.

Would you prefer a castle and market, the coast or a valley?

Combine Kochi Castle and Hirome Market in the city, or choose Katsurahama for coastal scenery. Decide whether the Ryoma exhibitions, botanical garden or Nikobuchi's blue waters appeal most, then compare the fares, admission and access.

Itineraries by trip length

Visit Katsurahama for the coast and Nikobuchi for the valley. Give them separate days where your trip allows, and decide whether to hire a car for Nikobuchi or take the bus from Ino.

2 days / 1 night

Choose between the castle interior and the Ryoma exhibitions. On day one, visit the castle and market or the market and shopping streets; head to Katsurahama on day two. This short trip focuses on the city and coast without adding Nikobuchi.

3 days / 2 nights

Choose a coastal or valley day in the middle of your stay. Take MY-YU to the Ryoma museum and Katsurahama, or hire a car for Nikobuchi. Fit the market and Kochi Castle around that outing.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay in central Kochi and visit the coast and valley on separate days, or spend two nights in Kochi followed by one in Ino. The Ino option requires a connection between the JR train and valley bus on the day you change accommodation.

5 days / 4 nights

Keep the same city base and visit the botanical garden, coast and valley on separate days. To reach the valley by bus, spend two nights in Ino so the move and valley outing fall on different days. Check the paper museum's closure dates before adding it on the moving day.

Once you have chosen your base, plan the areas you can explore on foot or by bus. Central Kochi, Katsurahama and Ino–Nikobuchi each need a different approach to transport.

Walk from Kochi Castle down to the market

Visit the castle interior, then have a meal at Hirome Market. Check the stairs up to the keep and your chosen market shops' opening hours. Walking through the castle park is separate from entering the paid buildings.

Choosing a bonito dish in Kochi

Look for bonito tataki on city restaurant menus. Choose the preparation and seasonings that suit your taste.

Bonito tataki, lightly seared on the outside

The surface of the bonito is briefly seared over high heat. It may be served with garlic, spring onion and yuzu ponzu, or seasoned with salt as shio tataki. Seasonings and accompaniments vary, so check the menu.
