Kochi, Japan: Where to Stay and What to See
Stay around Obiyamachi and Ohashidori for Kochi Castle’s historic buildings and market food. JR Kochi Station is convenient if you have several train journeys. Visit the Ryoma exhibits and Katsurahama’s coast in one day, and Nikobuchi’s water colors on another. A bus trip to Nikobuchi requires planning the round-trip walk to the stop and the return service too.
Castle and Market, Coast, or Gorge?
Combine Kochi Castle and Hirome Market in the city, or choose Katsurahama for the sea. Decide whether you also want Ryoma exhibits, the botanical garden, or Nikobuchi’s water colors, then compare admission and access to choose your itinerary.
Itineraries by Trip Length
Visit Katsurahama for the coast and Nikobuchi for the gorge. Give them separate days according to your trip length rather than fitting both into one day. First decide whether to reach Nikobuchi by rental car or by bus from Ino.
2 days, 1 night
First choose Kochi Castle’s interiors or the Ryoma exhibits. Visit the castle and market, or market and shopping arcade, on day one; head to Katsurahama on day two. Keep this short itinerary focused on the city and coast without adding Nikobuchi.
3 days, 2 nights
Choose the coast or gorge for the middle day. Visit the Ryoma museum and Katsurahama by MY Yu Bus, or Nikobuchi by rental car. Fit the market and Kochi Castle into the city days before and after.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay in Kochi for separate coast and gorge days, or spend two nights in Kochi followed by one in Ino. With the Ino stay, your JR train must connect with the gorge bus on the move day.
5 days, 4 nights
Keep the same city hotel for separate garden, coast, and gorge days. For a bus trip to the gorge, spend two nights in Ino to separate the move day from the gorge day. Check the paper museum’s closure period before adding it to the move day.
A Base for Dinner or Train Travel?
Around Obiyamachi and Ohashidori
Kochi · 高知県
Stay around Obiyamachi and Ohashidori to walk to Kochi Castle and Hirome Market. Harimayabashi is convenient for transfers between the city’s north–south and east–west tram lines. Check the distance from the market to your hotel using its address.
Around JR Kochi Station · 高知駅
The JR Kochi Station area suits trips connecting trains to other cities with the MY Yu Bus. The bus normally boards inside Kochi Tabihiroba south of the station. Check official guidance for boarding-point changes during events.

A Stay in Ino Town (Around JR Ino Station · 伊野駅)
If you stay in Ino to visit Nikobuchi, plan the bus or car journey from Ino Station to the gorge too. You still need to travel farther into the mountains; a hotel near the station does not put the gorge within walking distance.

Separate City Walks From the Coast and Gorge
Once you choose a base, divide the areas you will explore on foot or by bus. City sightseeing, Katsurahama, Ino, and Nikobuchi use different transport.
A City Walk From the Castle Down to the Market
Combine a visit inside Kochi Castle with a meal at Hirome Market afterward. Check the stairs up to the keep and market shop hours. Distinguish a castle park walk from paid entry inside the buildings.

Katsurahama for the Coast, Godaisan for the Garden
Choose Katsurahama Park for coastal scenery or Makino Botanical Garden for an unhurried look at plants and the greenhouse. MY Yu reaches both, but four-night A visits on separate days. Swimming is prohibited at Katsurahama’s beach.

The Gorge Requires More Travel From Ino Station
Take the gorge bus from Ino Station to Hodono Iriguchi, then walk about 2 km to Nikobuchi. First plan the return bus and the walk back to the stop. Ino Town Paper Museum is about a 10-minute walk from the station, so you can schedule it separately from the gorge visit.

Where Will You Go From Kochi Station?
Airport Buses Use the North Side; MY Yu Normally Uses the South
From Kochi Ryoma Airport · 高知龍馬空港, use an airport bus to reach the city. Services to Kochi Station drop you at the north-side bus terminal; for MY Yu, walk to the boarding point inside Kochi Tabihiroba south of the station. Tosaden lists north-side stop 6 for the airport-bound bus. Check your travel date’s timetable and arrival notices, and add airport bus fares separately to itinerary subtotals.

Bonito Meals and Onward Travel
Fit a Hirome Market meal after city sightseeing. On onward travel days, check meal and train times separately.
Order Separately at Hirome Market’s Shops
This market lets you choose food from several shops, each with its own prices and hours. For bonito dishes, check your chosen shop’s menu. You can also find dining options in the Kochi food and restaurant guide below.

Separate JR From City Transport for Onward Travel
See the transport guide for travel to another city. If considering ALL SHIKOKU Pass, check eligibility, included routes, and excluded transport in official guidance. The Ino stay itineraries require distinguishing the JR Kochi–Ino rail section from the gorge bus. Calculate the ¥2,860 Ino Station–Hodono Iriguchi bus round trip separately, and compare ordinary rail tickets with pass prices.

Choosing Bonito Dishes in Kochi
Look for bonito tataki on menus when dining in the city. Compare preparation and seasonings to choose what you like.
Bonito Tataki With a Lightly Seared Surface
The surface of bonito is briefly seared over high heat. Choose it with garnishes such as garlic and green onion and yuzu ponzu, or choose salt-seasoned tataki. Seasonings and garnishes vary by shop, so check the menu.
Calculate Transport Tickets and Admission Separately
The amounts below are individual adult transport-ticket and attraction prices. They are not a total trip cost including lodging, meals, and flights, and MY Yu tickets do not include attraction admission. Check each trip-length page for itinerary totals and excluded expenses.
| Item | Price | When to Compare It |
|---|---|---|
| Tosaden Tram Day Pass | ¥500 | For trams in the ¥230 city flat-fare zone. The Katsurahama bus is separate. |

Nikobuchi by Rental Car or by Bus From Ino?
Give Katsurahama and Nikobuchi separate days. Your gorge transport determines whether to keep your hotel in Kochi City or stay in Ino before setting out.
Keep Your City Hotel and Use a Rental Car
The official tourism council estimates about 70 minutes by car from Kochi City to Nikobuchi. Parking waits and walking to the gorge are extra; check marked parking areas and travel-date access notices. Rental cars, fuel, and parking are excluded from the itinerary’s attraction-fee subtotal.

Stay in Ino for the Gorge Bus
Take the gorge bus from Ino Station, get off at Hodono Iriguchi, and walk. Compare three-night B with one night in Ino and four-night B with two. The paper museum is scheduled to close for renovation November 16, 2026–March 31, 2027, so exclude it during that period.

Before Departure, On the Day, and FAQ
Where do I board the MY Yu Bus at Kochi Station?
Normally, board inside Kochi Tabihiroba south of JR Kochi Station. Events may change the boarding point, so check your travel date’s notices in the official MY Yu guide.
Can I use the tram day pass to reach Katsurahama?
Tosaden’s ¥500 tram day pass covers trams within the ¥230 flat-fare city zone. The Katsurahama bus is separate.
Should I visit Katsurahama and Nikobuchi on the same day?
Separate days are better. Katsurahama lies toward the coast from Kochi Station, while Nikobuchi requires another gorge-bound bus from Ino or a car journey. Especially for a bus visit to Nikobuchi, first plan the walks to and from the stop and your Ino-bound return service.
