Kochi, Japan: where should I stay and what should I see?
Stay near Obiyamachi/Ohashidori for historic castle interiors and market food, or JR Kochi for frequent trains. Combine Ryoma exhibits and Katsurahama on one day, leaving Nikobuchi’s gorge colours for another. By bus, plan return stop walks and the return service together.
Castle and market, coast or gorge?
Combine castle/market within the city, or choose Katsurahama for sea views. Decide among extra Ryoma exhibits, garden walks and Nikobuchi colours, then compare fees/access to choose a course.
Itineraries by trip length
See the sea at Katsurahama and gorge at Nikobuchi. Separate their days according to trip length; choose Nikobuchi by hire car or Ino bus first.
1 night, 2 days
Choose castle interiors or Ryoma exhibits first. Day 1 uses castle/market or market/arcade; day 2 goes to Katsurahama. Short courses focus on city/coast without adding Nikobuchi.
2 nights, 3 days
Choose the middle day for coast or gorge. MY Yu serves Ryoma museum/Katsurahama; the Nikobuchi course uses a hire car. Market/castle fit into city days before/after.
3 nights, 4 days
Keep a Kochi base for separate coast/gorge days, or spend two nights there then one in Ino. The Ino option connects JR and gorge bus on moving day.
4 nights, 5 days
Keep one city base for garden/coast/gorge on separate days. For the gorge by bus, spend two Ino nights to separate moving/visiting days. Check Paper Museum closures before choosing it on moving day.

Around Obiyamachi and Ohashidori

Around JR Kochi Station · 高知駅
JR Kochi suits onward trains and MY Yu buses. MY Yu normally boards inside Kochi Tabi Hiroba south of the station; check official notices for event-related stand changes.

Stay in Ino, around JR Ino Station · 伊野駅
For Nikobuchi from an Ino stay, plan the bus or vehicle journey from Ino Station to the gorge too. Staying near the station does not make the mountain-side gorge walkable directly.

Separate city walks from coast and gorge visits
After choosing a base, divide walking/bus areas. City, Katsurahama and Ino/Nikobuchi need different transport even within one Kochi trip.
City walk from castle down to market
Visit the castle interior, then eat at Hirome Market. Check keep stairs and shop hours together. Park walks differ from paid buildings.

Katsurahama for sea, Godaisan for the garden
Choose Katsurahama Park for coastal scenery or Makino for plants/greenhouse walks. MY Yu reaches both, but five-day option A separates their days. Swimming at Katsurahama is prohibited.

The gorge needs another journey from Ino
Take a gorge bus from Ino to Hodono-Iriguchi, then walk about 2 km to Nikobuchi. Choose the return bus/stop walk first. Ino Paper Museum is about 10 minutes from the station, allowing a separate visit order.

Leaving Kochi Station: which way?
Airport buses use the north; MY Yu normally the south
Kochi Ryoma Airport · 高知龍馬空港 has airport-connection buses into the city. Kochi Station arrivals use the northern terminal; walk south to Kochi Tabi Hiroba for MY Yu. Tosaden’s airport-bound northern stand is 6. Check your date’s operation/arrival notices and add airport fares separately to course subtotals.

Bonito meals and onward travel
Eat at Hirome after city visits. For onward days, check meal and train times separately.

Separate JR from city transport for onward travel
Use the transport guide for other cities. For All Shikoku, check official eligibility, included routes and exclusions. Ino-stay courses distinguish JR Kochi–Ino from gorge buses: Ino↔Hodono-Iriguchi return 2,860 is separate. Compare normal rail tickets against pass cost.

Choosing bonito dishes in Kochi
Look for bonito tataki when dining in the city. Choose preparation/seasoning to your taste.
Bonito tataki, seared on the outside
Bonito is briefly seared over high heat. Choose yuzu ponzu with accompaniments such as garlic/spring onion, or salt-seasoned tataki. Seasoning/accompaniments vary; read the menu.
Calculate transport tickets and admission separately
These adult figures are individual transport/facility prices, not total trips including accommodation/meals/flights. MY Yu does not include facility admission. See each trip-length page for totals/exclusions.

Nikobuchi by hire car or bus from Ino?
Give Katsurahama/Nikobuchi separate days. Gorge transport determines whether to keep a Kochi base or sleep/depart from Ino.
Return by hire car from your city base
Official council guidance gives about 70 minutes driving from Kochi City, excluding parking waits/gorge walks. Check marked parking and visiting-date access notices. Hire, fuel and parking are excluded from course facility totals.

Ino base for gorge buses
Take a bus from Ino to Hodono-Iriguchi, then walk. Compare one Ino night in four-day B with two in five-day B. Paper Museum planned renovation 16 November 2026–31 March 2027 prevents visits then.

Tosaden’s JPY 500 tram day pass covers the JPY 230 flat-fare city tram zone. Katsurahama buses are separate.
Can I visit Katsurahama and Nikobuchi on the same day?
Separate days work better. Katsurahama is coast-bound from Kochi; Nikobuchi requires another bus from Ino or a car. Especially by bus, choose stop walks and the Ino return first.
