Five days in Kyoto: stay in the city or spend a northern night?
Keep Kyoto accommodation for separate Nijo Castle, Arashiyama, Uji and Fushimi Inari days. For an overnight stay in northern Kyoto, compare two Kyoto nights → one southern Monju night → one Kyoto night. Return from the north on day 4, spend the final night in Kyoto and leave next day, without connecting final departure on the northern return day.

- JR Saga-Arashiyama station → Kyoto station
Take a Kyoto-bound Sagano line train from JR Saga-Arashiyama. Check the destination and departure time in your date’s train guidance before boarding.
The garden opens from 08:30 to 17:00, with reception until 16:50. The buildings open from 08:30 to 16:45, with reception until 16:30. Check official notices for date-specific early garden opening and building or Dharma Hall suspensions. Early opening does not apply to every reception or building. Check your date’s JR return trains separately. For a closed area, choose garden-only viewing or change the date.
Optional: have lunch in Arashiyama afterwards or take a riverside walk if time allows. Check restaurant location, hours and queues, and decide your walking turnaround point. Allow time from your final meal or walking stop to JR Saga-Arashiyama. Skip either option to suit weather or return timing.
Day 3 · Uji
- Kyoto station → JR Uji station
Take a JR Nara line train towards Uji and Nara stopping at Uji, and get off at JR Uji. Distinguish it from Keihan Uji.
- JR Uji station → Byodoin
Walk from JR Uji to Byodoin; official facility access guidance gives about ten minutes.
- Byodoin → Byodoin garden and Hoshokan museum
For Phoenix Hall interior viewing, check same-day first-come reception first, then plan the order of your garden and Hoshokan visits. The interior costs JPY 300 beyond basic admission. If reception has ended, visit the garden and Hoshokan.

Choose a JR Nara line train stopping at Inari. Some rapid trains pass it, so check the stops.
- JR Inari station → Main sanctuary and torii area
Enter the shrine opposite the station and worship at the main sanctuary and torii area. Standard worship is free; prayer services and charms cost extra. Explore these areas, then return through the same entrance. Reaching the mountain summit needs more time. Avoid taking photos that block passage.

- Amanohashidate station and Monju rotating bridge → Southern pine path and Monju return
If there is walking time, go from the station via the rotating bridge on the Monju and Chionji side and Daitenkyo Bridge to the southern pine path. Walk only the southern section, returning to Monju over the same bridges. Crossing to Fuchu at the far end or returning by boat is excluded. In strong wind or rain, postpone the walk to tomorrow morning or skip it.

All Hashidate seats are reserved. Check outward and return services in the operator’s regular timetable and your date’s search, then reserve before boarding. The walk below covers the southern Monju side. Fuchu accommodation across the sandbar has different local travel.

Frequently asked questions
Must I leave Kyoto immediately after returning from Amanohashidate?
You may spend a final Kyoto night and depart next day. This northern plan returns by Hashidate on day 4, stays overnight and leaves on day 5. Same-day international departure needs checks of the return train, airport travel and flight check-in together. A Kyoto night is not compulsory if your actual train and flight leave sufficient time. Check the journey from your final accommodation to Kyoto station.
Is a pass cheaper for only the Hashidate return?
The JR October 2026 regular-season ordinary-class reserved-seat fare is JPY 5,000 one way or JPY 10,000 return when both dates are regular season. The adult five-day Kansai Wide pass costs JPY 12,000, so this return alone does not make it cheaper. Add other covered journeys in the same five days and actual seasonal fares before comparing. Municipal subway, admission, accommodation and meals are separate.
