Five days in Osaka: separate days for city and nearby visits

Stay four nights at the same Namba accommodation, splitting castle exhibitions, Mozu exhibitions and Umeda views across days, or choosing separate aquarium, Minoh walk and observatory days. Compare Kyoto or Kobe as a day trip or overnight stay.

Reduce Namba nights by the number spent in Kyoto or Kobe, and decide whether to return to Osaka the next day. Admission and transport subtotals exclude accommodation, meals and airport travel.

Separate days for castle history, Mozu exhibitions and city views

Stay four nights at the same Namba accommodation, with separate visits to the castle’s history displays, Mozu burial-mound exhibitions and Umeda views. Unlike the aquarium and waterfall plan, this uses a day for Sakai’s history and day 4 for rest around Namba.

Day 1 · Travel from Namba to the castle museum

Have lunch in Namba, then visit the castle museum and walk through the park. If you arrive late, shorten the visit to meet last admission or move it to another day.

  1. Namba → Hommachi

After lunch, take a northbound Midosuji line train from Namba. Get off two stops later at Hommachi and change to the Chuo line.

    Osaka Metro journey search

  2. Hommachi → Tanimachi 4-chome

Stay inside the gates at Hommachi and change to the Chuo line towards Nagata and Ikoma. Get off at Tanimachi 4-chome. Search the Namba → Hommachi → Tanimachi 4-chome route for your date and allow time to change platforms and wait at Hommachi.

    Osaka Metro journey search

  3. Tanimachi 4-chome exit 9 → Otemon Gate and castle tower

From exit 9, follow the park map through Otemon Gate to the tower’s ticket and admission area. The official walk from the station to the tower is about 15–20 minutes. A standard tower visit takes around 50–60 minutes, or about 90 minutes to see more detail. Afterwards, walk outside the castle and beside the moat. Shorten the park walk if ticket queues are long. Other paid areas, including Nishinomaru Garden, are separate choices.

  4. Castle tower → Tanimachi 4-chome, Hommachi and Namba

After your visit, return to Tanimachi 4-chome and take the Chuo line west towards Hommachi. Change there to the Midosuji line towards Tennoji and Nakamozu and get off at Namba. Return to your accommodation, check in and have dinner in Namba. For evening views, make a short visit near Ebisubashi and leave the riverside walk for the final day.

  5. Late arrival or closure → Adjust the visit

Tower admission ends at 17:30, or earlier when busy. It closes 28 December–1 January. After a late arrival, eat in Namba on day 1 and replace the day 4 Namba rest with the tower visit. Check closures and transport for the replacement date first, and do not try to fit in the full Namba Parks garden visit as well. Leave out the museum if you cannot secure enough visiting time on another day.

Day 2 · See Mozu’s exhibitions and return to Namba accommodation

Learn about burial-mound shapes and history at the free visitor centre. An outside worship-area visit depends on access on site. Have lunch before returning to your Namba accommodation.

  1. Namba accommodation → Metro Tennoji and JR Hanwa line

After breakfast, take the Midosuji line towards Tennoji and Nakamozu. At Tennoji, leave the Metro gates and walk to the JR Hanwa line platforms. Tickets for the two operators are separate.

  2. JR Tennoji → Mozu station west exit

Take a JR Hanwa line local train stopping at Mozu. Use the official journey search to select a local service from Tennoji to Mozu without a change; do not simply board a rapid train. The verified standard adult fare is JPY 240 one way.

  3. Mozu station west exit → Mozu Mounded Tombs Visitor Center

Walk to the visitor centre 350 metres west of Mozu station. Standard official hours are 09:00–18:00; admission is free, with closure 29 December–3 January. Exhibitions and aerial footage show the whole burial-mound shape that is difficult to see from the ground. You do not enter the mound itself.

  4. Visitor centre → Optional exterior visit and lunch

Check guidance at the centre before choosing a walk to the outside worship area and surroundings of Emperor Nintoku’s burial mound. Sakai city’s roughly ten-minute walk starts at Mozu station, not at the centre. Imperial Household Agency standard worship hours are 08:30–17:00. Access may be restricted on weekends, Japanese public holidays, 29 December–3 January, or for ceremonies and management; check guidance for your date. Finish with the exhibitions alone if access is restricted. The basic itinerary excludes a walk around the entire mound, paid museums, cycling and balloon experiences. Choose an open venue for lunch and a break.

  5. Exhibitions, optional exterior visit and lunch → Mozu west exit and JR platform

Return to Mozu station after the exhibitions and lunch. Directly from the centre, retrace the 350-metre route to the west of the station. After an exterior walk or restaurant stop, allow the additional walk from that location. For a centre event, search for a local train you can catch after it ends, and shorten the walk if your return becomes late.

  6. Mozu station → JR Tennoji

Take a Hanwa line local towards Tennoji and get off there. Select a direct local train in the official journey search, distinguishing it from a faster route with changes. The verified standard adult fare is JPY 240 one way. After arriving at JR Tennoji, you still need the Metro journey to Namba.

  7. JR Tennoji → Metro Namba and the same accommodation

Leave the JR gates and follow Osaka Metro Midosuji line signs to the Metro gates. Tickets for these operators are separate. Take a northbound train towards Namba and Umeda, get off at Namba, then return to the same booked accommodation for dinner and a rest. Walking and waiting from JR arrival to the Metro platform, and the station-to-hotel walk in Namba, are extra. Stay in Namba after today’s sightseeing.
