Osaka travel: choose your accommodation and itinerary

Consider Namba for Dotonbori dinners and Nankai airport trains, or Umeda for the Floating Garden and a Hankyu trip to walk in Minoh. Choose the castle exhibitions, aquarium or walks that interest you first, then read the itinerary for your trip length.

Castle exhibitions, aquarium or walks: where should I start?

Choose between history displays at Osaka Castle Museum and time at Kaiyukan first. Compare the Floating Garden for city views, Minoh Falls for a longer walk, or the Mozu visitor centre for burial-mound structure and history. Split riverside and garden walks between Dotonbori and Namba Parks.

Itineraries by trip length

Count your full sightseeing days between arrival and departure. Choosing your preferred castle, aquarium, waterfall or burial-mound exhibitions also helps you choose Namba or Umeda as a base. Open a card below for daily journeys and the admission and transport items included in its subtotal.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night in Namba and choose castle exhibitions and Dotonbori, or Kaiyukan, on day 1. On day 2, walk beside the river or in Namba Parks garden and return to Namba.

3 days / 2 nights

Compare using the middle day for the castle and Umeda observatory together, or for the aquarium. The aquarium itinerary puts castle exhibitions on departure morning, so you need enough time before your departure.

4 days / 3 nights

Choose three nights in Umeda for the Minoh waterfall walk, or three in Namba for Mozu exhibitions and the aquarium. A Kyoto or Kobe day trip replaces an existing sightseeing day.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay four nights in Namba and split castle, Mozu exhibitions and views across days, or choose aquarium, Minoh and views. For an overnight stay in Kyoto or Kobe, reduce your Namba nights and decide whether to return the following day.

Where to stay

Namba · 難波

Choose Namba for dinner in Dotonbori and a walk back to your accommodation. If arriving on a Nankai airport train, compare its arrival station with your accommodation address. Nankai Namba, subway Namba and JR Namba have separate platforms.

Tourism bureau riverside guidance

Umeda · 梅田

Consider Umeda for shopping around Osaka station, the Floating Garden Observatory and a Hankyu trip to Minoh. Check the particular railway station and exit against your accommodation map; a nearby station name does not mean every platform is close.

Split your days after choosing accommodation

Choose areas you can group in a day

Use Namba as a base for separate walks by Dotonbori’s river and through Namba Parks garden. Group Umeda’s Floating Garden views with meals near the station, and allow time for Kaiyukan in Tempozan. Divide castle, observatory and aquarium visits across days according to admission bookings and walking effort.

Minoh is a walking day from Hankyu Minoh station to the waterfall. In Sakai, the free visitor-centre exhibitions west of Mozu station are the basic visit; the itinerary does not enter the mound. Choose the waterfall or exhibitions to replace a city day.

Eat in the neighbourhood you are exploring

In Namba, choose separately between snacks such as takoyaki and an okonomiyaki meal. For an early riverside walk, check when your chosen shop opens. On a Umeda day, eat near the station before or after the observatory to reduce return journeys to Namba.

Kaiyukan re-entry has ended, so you cannot eat outside and resume the visit. Eat before or afterwards. Namba Parks garden opens at 10:00, while shops and restaurants generally open at 11:00.

Distinguish Metro, Hankyu and JR services

From Namba, both the castle and Kaiyukan routes change to the Chuo line at Hommachi, but continue in opposite directions. Get off at Tanimachi 4-chome for the castle or Osakako for the aquarium. Walking routes to the Umeda observatory differ depending on whether you start at Metro Umeda or JR Osaka.

For Minoh, take Hankyu from Osaka-umeda via Ishibashi handai-mae and change to the Minoh line. For Sakai, change from Metro Tennoji to the JR Hanwa line and choose a train stopping at Mozu. Hankyu and JR fares are excluded from the Metro one-day card. Immigration, baggage collection and accommodation-to-platform walks are additional to the train ride. Allow separate time to reach your airport train’s platform and finish flight check-in.

On departure day, allow time to return for luggage left at your accommodation. Choose the final sight so you can still reach your departure station or airport afterwards.

Compare JR passes with your actual routes and dates

You need not buy a JR pass first if your trip mainly uses city subways and Hankyu to Minoh. JR pass prices are excluded from these itineraries. For JR journeys to Kyoto or Kobe, compare standard return fares with the pass’s valid days. Budget separately for reaching JR Osaka and travelling from the destination station to sights.

WEST QR Kansai Mini covers regular trains in its valid area for three consecutive days. Limited express trains such as Haruka require a separate limited express ticket; Shinkansen requires a new fare ticket. For Kansai Area, check your selected consecutive days and coverage, distinguishing these from Shinkansen. Kansai Wide includes the Shin-Osaka–Okayama section of the Sanyo Shinkansen for five consecutive days but excludes the Kyoto–Shin-Osaka Tokaido Shinkansen. Check each product’s official foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor eligibility, activation, seat and exchange procedures. These tickets do not cover all accommodation, admission, private railways and city buses.

Split city and nearby trips from Namba or Umeda

Consider where you want to spend your evenings and which railway you will need the next day. Even with the same city accommodation, Minoh and Sakai use different routes.

Riverside and garden days from Namba

Separate Dotonbori’s riverside walk and Namba Parks garden visits, choosing meals in Namba and Dotonbori. Garden and restaurant opening times differ, so an early walk cannot always be followed immediately by a meal.

City views and Minoh from Umeda

Walk from the station to the Floating Garden; for Minoh, change Hankyu trains and walk to the waterfall. Distinguish whether your accommodation route leads to JR Osaka or Hankyu Osaka-umeda.

In Sakai, see exhibitions rather than entering the mound

Mostly Metro, or Hankyu and JR too?
