Four days in Osaka: waterfall walks or burial-mound exhibitions

Choose three Umeda nights for Minoh Falls, or three Namba nights for Mozu exhibitions and Kaiyukan. A day seeing Kyoto’s Nijo Castle or Arashiyama, or Kobe Port Tower, replaces the Minoh or Mozu day.

Select return JR trains between Osaka station and Kyoto or Sannomiya for a Kyoto or Kobe day trip. Check the walk back from local sights to the station and your return to the same Osaka accommodation.

Minoh waterfall walk, city views and departure-day Dotonbori

Stay three nights in Umeda if you want one Osaka day to follow the river to a waterfall. Take Hankyu to Minoh station, then walk to the falls. Visit the Floating Garden on day 1, the waterfall on day 2 and Osaka Castle on day 3.

Day 1 · Umeda accommodation → Floating Garden → accommodation

  1. Umeda accommodation → JR Osaka station and Sky Building dedicated entrance

Arrive by day and have lunch near Osaka station. Leave JR Osaka’s Bridge Gate on Level 3 towards the Central North Exit. Take the escalator to Level 2, then Level 1, and walk beside Grand Front’s south building. Cross the junction, use the short underpass of about 40 metres, then return to street level; the Sky Building is across the road. The official walk starting at JR Osaka is about seven minutes, excluding accommodation-to-station travel and building queues. Find the observatory’s dedicated outdoor entrance, separate from the office tower lifts.

  2. Observatory dedicated entrance → Visit and return to Umeda accommodation

Visit and rest in the afternoon, then return near Osaka station for dinner and accommodation check-in. The observatory opens from 09:30 to 22:30, with last admission at 22:00. After a late arrival, move the observatory to day 3 after the castle, checking last admission at both facilities.

Day 2 · Hankyu Osaka-umeda → Minoh Falls → Umeda

  1. Hankyu Osaka-umeda → Ishibashi handai-mae and Minoh

Finish the waterfall walk in daylight. Before leaving, check park restrictions, weather and railway notices. If rain or restrictions make walking difficult, rest in Umeda instead. If postponing the walk, check whether the castle would then fall on a closure day. After breakfast, take a Hankyu Takarazuka line train stopping at Ishibashi handai-mae and change there to the Minoh line towards Minoh.

  2. Minoh station → Waterfall walk and return to the station

The park entrance at Ichinohashi is about five minutes from Minoh station; the waterfall is about 40–50 minutes from the station. Do not add these two times together. Consider a morning start for the riverside walk and a rest at the falls. Return along the same path and have lunch near the station. Fatigue or breaks may make the return walk longer.

  3. Minoh station → Ishibashi handai-mae and Umeda

After lunch and a rest near the station, take the Minoh line towards Ishibashi handai-mae. Change there to the Takarazuka line towards Osaka-umeda. Select return services for your travel date in the official timetable before departure, and check platform destination signs when changing trains.

  2. Dotonbori riverside → Return to Umeda station and depart

Mozu burial-mound exhibitions, aquarium and departure-day Namba garden

Choose separate days for Mozu’s free exhibitions and Kaiyukan if history and marine life interest you more than a waterfall walk. Stay three nights at the same Namba accommodation, then walk in the garden near the station on your final day.

Day 1 · Namba accommodation → Dotonbori → Namba accommodation

  1. Namba accommodation → Dotonbori riverside

After lunch in Namba, walk to the river. From subway Namba, follow street signs towards Ebisubashi and Dotonbori. The tourism bureau lists about five minutes from Midosuji line Namba station; walking time from your accommodation will differ.

  2. Dotonbori riverside → Accommodation check-in and dinner

Day 2 · See Mozu’s exhibitions and return to Namba accommodation

Learn about burial-mound shapes and history at the free visitor centre. An outside worship-area visit depends on access on site. Have lunch before returning to your Namba accommodation.

  1. Namba → Metro Tennoji and JR Hanwa line

After breakfast, take the Midosuji line towards Tennoji and Nakamozu. At Tennoji, leave the Metro gates and walk to the JR Hanwa line platforms. Tickets for the two operators are separate.

  4. Visitor centre → Optional exterior visit and lunch

Check guidance at the centre before choosing a walk to the outside worship area and surroundings of Emperor Nintoku’s burial mound. Sakai city’s roughly ten-minute walk starts at Mozu station, not at the centre. Imperial Household Agency standard worship hours are 08:30–17:00. Access may be restricted on weekends, Japanese public holidays, 29 December–3 January, or for ceremonies and management; check guidance for your date. Finish with the exhibitions alone if access is restricted. The basic itinerary excludes a walk around the entire mound, paid museums, cycling and balloon experiences. Choose an open venue for lunch and a break.

  5. Exhibitions, optional exterior visit and lunch → Mozu west exit and JR platform

Return to Mozu station after the exhibitions and lunch. Directly from the centre, retrace the 350-metre route to the west of the station. After an exterior walk or restaurant stop, allow the additional walk from that location. For a centre event, search for a local train you can catch after it ends, and shorten the walk if your return becomes late.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a subway one-day card for Minoh or Sakai?

Hankyu to Minoh and the JR Hanwa line in Sakai require separate fares. They are outside the Metro and specified City Bus coverage.

Enjoy Eco Card

Do we enter the burial mound at Mozu?

The basic visit is the free visitor-centre exhibitions. The itinerary does not enter Emperor Nintoku’s mound. Its outside worship area is optional depending on access on site. Finish with the exhibitions alone if access is restricted.

Does a JR pass cover all local transport when adding Kyoto or Kobe?

Calculate valid JR routes separately from destination-city transport. Travel from your Osaka hotel to JR Osaka, from Kyoto or Kobe’s Sannomiya to sights, and the return journeys are additional. Metro, Hankyu to Minoh and Kobe’s City Loop are not all included in the same JR pass. Compare individual tickets and passes, checking actual return routes and valid dates first.

Should I put Kyoto and Kobe in the same day?

Choose the city you want to see first. This guide replaces the existing Minoh or Mozu day with a Kyoto or Kobe day. Allow time to return to the same Osaka accommodation after sightseeing and local transport. Do not put both cities and Osaka sightseeing into one day.
