Four days in Kyoto: should I stay in the north?
Keep Kyoto accommodation for separate Nijo Castle, Arashiyama and Uji days and a final day near the station. For a northern night and next-day pine walk, compare two Kyoto nights then one in Monju south of Amanohashidate. Return by Hashidate for final departure on day 4; choose city accommodation if connection time is insufficient.

- Accommodation near Kyoto station → Kyoto station · board Hashidate
Check Hashidate departure time and platform at Kyoto for your date. All seats are reserved, so prepare full-route fare and limited express tickets plus your seat reservation.
- Kyoto station → Amanohashidate station
Take the direct Hashidate limited express from Kyoto to Amanohashidate without changing at Fukuchiyama. Search departure and arrival in your date’s timetable. Before boarding, prepare full-route fare and limited express tickets and a reserved seat.
All Hashidate seats are reserved. Check outward and return services in the operator’s regular timetable and your date’s search, then reserve before boarding. The walk below covers the southern Monju side. Fuchu accommodation across the sandbar has different local travel.
Day 4 · Southern sandbar walk and Kyoto return
- Monju accommodation → Southern pine path and Monju
Walk from the Monju and Chionji side over the rotating bridge, then Daitenkyo Bridge, to the southern pine path. Return over the same two bridges without going to the far end. After walking and eating, go to Amanohashidate station. Shorten or skip the walk to suit your return train.

- Amanohashidate station → Kyoto station
Board your reserved Hashidate at Amanohashidate and get off at Kyoto. Search the return arrival time in your date’s timetable. For an immediate airport or onward journey, check connection time after arrival. If it is insufficient, choose three nights near Kyoto station for city and Uji visits instead. For another Kyoto night after the northern return, compare the five-day itinerary.
Finish walking and board your reserved return service at Amanohashidate. An immediate airport or onward journey from Kyoto needs a separate connection search. If the return arrival leaves insufficient time, choose the three-night Kyoto station itinerary. For a Kyoto night after returning from the north, compare the separate five-day plan.
Included: Nijo Castle and Ninomaru Palace JPY 1,300; Byodoin garden and Hoshokan JPY 700. Amanohashidate sandbar walking is free.
Extra costs: All rail and subway fares, including Hashidate return travel; two Kyoto nights and one Monju night, meals, Phoenix Hall interior JPY 300, Honmaru Palace and separate exhibitions, boats and observation decks, and airport or onward travel after the Kyoto return.
Northern railway travel is extra. The JR October 2026 fare table lists JPY 5,000 one way for an adult ordinary-class reserved seat in the regular season, or JPY 10,000 return if both days are regular-season dates. Check actual return trains, seats and fares, Monju accommodation and connections beyond Kyoto together.

For a night in Amanohashidate
Hashidate from Kyoto to Amanohashidate has all reserved seats. Choose return trains and seats, then match the location and check-in time of southern Monju accommodation. Sandbar walking and hilltop observation decks are separate visits. The basic walk excludes crossing north and observation decks.
Northern train fares and timetable basis
The JR October 2026 regular-season adult ordinary-class reserved-seat Hashidate fare is JPY 2,320 basic fare + JPY 2,680 limited express ticket = JPY 5,000 one way. If both dates are regular season, return fares total JPY 10,000, including the Tango section. Recheck seasonal fares and reserved seats for your dates. Hashidate runs directly between Kyoto and Amanohashidate; check outward and return departures and arrivals in the operator’s timetable.

Do I need a pass for the northern train?
You can take Hashidate with individual fare and limited express tickets. The JR October 2026 regular-season ordinary-class reserved-seat return totals JPY 10,000, compared with the adult five-day Kansai Wide pass at JPY 12,000. The northern return alone does not make the pass cheaper. Add other covered routes in the same validity period before comparing. Temporary Visitor and passport conditions, plus advance seat reservations, apply. Municipal subway, attraction admission, accommodation and meals are extra.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to the airport on my Amanohashidate return day?
Search the return Hashidate to Kyoto and airport travel around your actual departure. If its arrival leaves too little airport time even with a shorter walk, choose three Kyoto station nights for city and Uji visits. For a Kyoto night after the northern return, compare the separate five-day plan. Hashidate arrival alone does not guarantee a flight connection.
Can I compare Kansai Wide for Hashidate?
Kansai Wide is a five-consecutive-day pass covering JR limited express and regular trains in its valid area, plus Kyoto Tango Railway. Hashidate has all reserved seats, so reserve before boarding. A non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor eligibility are required. Kyoto municipal subway, admission, accommodation and meals are extra. Individual tickets are another option.
