Four days in Kyoto: spend a night in the north?

Keep your Kyoto hotel for separate days at Nijo Castle, Arashiyama, and Uji, then prepare for departure around Kyoto Station on the last day. For a northern overnight stay and a pine-path walk the next morning, compare two nights in Kyoto followed by one in Monju south of Amanohashidate. You return to Kyoto by Hashidate on the final day before your onward departure. Choose the city-based course if that connection leaves too little time.

Separate Days for Nijo Castle, Arashiyama, and Uji

Give Nijo Castle's palace and gardens, an Arashiyama garden, and Byodoin's Phoenix Hall area a day each. Stay three nights at one hotel near Kyoto Station; on the last day, stay close to the station and prepare for departure.

Day 1: Castle and palace

Keep the same Kyoto Station hotel and give Nijo Castle, Arashiyama, and Uji separate days. Start with the castle and palace if you can arrive before last admission.

  1. Kyoto Station → Nijojo-mae Station

Take the Karasuma Line toward Kokusaikaikan from Kyoto Station. Transfer at Karasuma Oike to the Tozai Line toward Uzumasa Tenjingawa and get off at Nijojo-mae.

Take a JR Sagano Line train toward Sonobe that stops at Saga-Arashiyama.

Check your travel-date Hashidate departure and platform at Kyoto Station. All seats are reserved, so prepare fare and limited express tickets covering the full journey and your reserved seat.

  2. Kyoto Station → Amanohashidate Station

All Hashidate seats require reservations. Check round trips in the operator's regular timetable and for your travel dates, reserving seats before boarding. The walk below stays on the south side near Monju. A Fuchu hotel across the sandbar requires different local transportation.

Day 4: Walk the south-side sandbar, then return to Kyoto

  1. Monju hotel → South-side pine path and Monju

Walk from the Monju and Chion-ji side over the rotating bridge and Daitenkyo Bridge to the south-side pine path. Return across the same two bridges without going to the far end. After walking and eating, head to Amanohashidate Station. Shorten or skip the walk to fit your return train.

  2. Amanohashidate Station → Kyoto Station

Board your reserved Hashidate to Kyoto. Search its arrival time for your travel date. If continuing directly to the airport or another destination, check that the connection leaves enough time after arrival. If it does not, choose the course with three nights near Kyoto Station for city sightseeing and Uji. For another Kyoto night after returning from the north, compare the five-day course.

Finish your walk in time to board your reserved return train at Amanohashidate. For onward airport or destination travel from Kyoto, search that connection separately. If the return arrival leaves too little time, choose the course with three nights near Kyoto Station instead. For a Kyoto night after returning from the north, compare the five-day course.

Train fares and timetables for northern Kyoto

According to JR's October 2026 fare table, an adult standard-season one-way journey in an ordinary reserved seat on the Hashidate costs ¥5,000: a ¥2,320 base fare plus a ¥2,680 limited-express charge. If both travel dates fall in the standard season, the round trip costs ¥10,000, including the Tango section. Check seasonal charges and reserved seats for your actual dates. Do I need a rail pass for the northern trip?

You can take the Hashidate with a regular base-fare ticket and limited-express ticket. JR's October 2026 fare table gives a standard-season round-trip price of ¥10,000 for an ordinary reserved seat, compared with ¥12,000 for an adult five-day Kansai Wide Area Pass. The northern round trip alone does not establish that the pass is cheaper. Add any other covered journeys within the same validity period before comparing. Check the pass's Temporary Visitor and passport requirements, and reserve seats in advance. Municipal subway fares, attraction admission, hotels, and meals are extra.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go straight to the airport after returning from Amanohashidate?

Search the Hashidate return to Kyoto and your onward airport journey against your booked departure. If the return train leaves too little time for the airport even after shortening the walk, choose three nights near Kyoto Station for city sights and Uji. For another Kyoto night after the northern return, compare the five-day course. A Hashidate arrival alone does not guarantee a flight connection.

Can I compare the Kansai Wide Area Pass for the Hashidate?

Kansai Wide is a consecutive five-day pass covering JR limited-express and local trains within its area, plus Kyoto Tango Railway. All Hashidate seats are reserved, so reserve before boarding. You need a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. Kyoto municipal subway fares, admission, lodging, and meals are separate. Regular tickets are also an option.
