Should you stay in Okayama or Kurashiki?

Consider a base near Okayama Station to visit the castle, garden and Kurashiki. For two days of streets and art, stay near Kurashiki Station. Washuzan's Great Seto Bridge views are a separate trip, reached by bus from Kojima Station.

Start with the sights you want to see in Okayama

The castle and Korakuen are in Okayama City; canal streets, Ohara Museum of Art and the folkcraft museum are in Kurashiki. Great Seto Bridge views are at Washuzan in Kojima. For Kibitsujinja Shrine, take a separate JR journey to Kibitsu Station, then walk.

Itineraries by trip length

Consider accommodation near Okayama Station for the castle and garden, or near Kurashiki Station for historic streets and art museums. With more days, compare routes adding Kibitsujinja Shrine or Washuzan. Arrange onward travel around where your final day's sightseeing ends.

2 days / 1 night

Spend one night near Okayama Station for separate days at the castle and Korakuen. Choose a Kurashiki Station base for historic streets and Ohara Museum exhibitions. Both routes include Day 2 sightseeing, so they do not suit a morning departure.

3 days / 2 nights

Spend two nights in Okayama for the castle, garden, Kurashiki streets and Kibitsujinja Shrine. For Ohara and folkcraft exhibitions and Washuzan sunset, consider two nights in Kurashiki instead. Use the sunset bus only when its operating day and monthly departure fit.

4 days / 3 nights

Spend three nights in Okayama for Ohara exhibitions and Washuzan sunset, or separate days for Kurashiki streets and folkcraft. Add the sunset programme when Day 3 is a Friday, Saturday or the day before a public holiday, returning to Kojima Station on the same bus.

5 days / 4 nights

Spend four nights in Okayama to keep one base and visit Kurashiki streets and Ohara on different days. For two days in Kurashiki, split your stay into two nights each in Okayama and Kurashiki. To add sunset on the moving day, Day 3, reach Kojima Station for the monthly departure. Omit Washuzan that day if delayed.

Where should you stay?

Places to stay and sightseeing areas

Okayama City's castle and garden are close together, while Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is reached on foot from a station in another city. Washuzan is in Kurashiki's Kojima area, rather than beside the historical quarter. Kibitsujinja Shrine is a separate railway trip west of Okayama City. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are outside these routes.

Choosing accommodation and your arrival and departure stations

To keep the same accommodation, stay near Okayama Station and make return trips to Kurashiki, Kibitsu and Kojima. One-night option B and two-night option B spend two days on streets and exhibitions, staying near Kurashiki Station. Four-night option B moves from two nights in Okayama to two in Kurashiki. None stays in Kojima; if choosing that base, adjust return routes and costs accordingly.

Compare local JR fares and regional passes on the same basis

The four-night, five-day option A has JR base fares of JPY 1,320 for two return trips to Kurashiki, JPY 1,020 return to Kojima and JPY 420 return to Kibitsu, totalling JPY 2,760. Its JPY 6,420 subtotal also includes admission, trams and the sunset programme, so do not compare the whole amount with a JR pass.

The adult Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs JPY 17,000 for five days. If taking only the listed local and rapid services within the prefecture, these JR fares alone do not make the pass cheaper. Recompare actual sections, seats and dates if adding Shinkansen, limited expresses or other travel to and from Kansai or Hiroshima. Trams, Shimoden buses and facility admission are excluded from the pass calculation here.

Reach Washuzan from Kojima Station by a temporary daytime service or the separate sunset programme. The JPY 520 daytime ticket and JPY 540 sunset bus are different tickets. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are outside these southern routes; additional travel there is excluded from current costs.

The four-night, five-day option A's JR base fares from Okayama to Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu total JPY 2,760. From an Okayama base, choose separate JR return services for Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu. The Washuzan sunset programme connects by bus at Kojima Station, so check the Okayama-bound train after its return. Routes moving accommodation to Kurashiki distinguish the one-way move from sightseeing-day return travel.

From Kojima Station to Washuzan sunset and back

Take a Seto-Ohashi Line local train from Okayama that stops at Kojima, then go to stand 5 outside the station. Choose JR to suit the sunset programme's monthly departure time on Fridays, Saturdays and the day before a public holiday. If the day does not fit or there is too little time for JR after the scheduled return, omit the coastal visit and relax in Okayama. The programme visits Sanbyakuzan and Washuzan viewpoints, allowing about 15 minutes at each, then returns to Kojima Station. It costs JPY 540. Follow the official monthly outward and return timetable. No reservation is needed, but you cannot board if full; omit the trip if you have no alternative transport arranged. Follow crew instructions for walks at the stops. When the bus returns, take a local train to Okayama, allowing boarding preparation after the scheduled bus return. Stay in Okayama tonight.

What should you eat in Okayama?

Choose food to suit the area you will visit, then check menus and prices at restaurants open that day.

Consider barazushi, a regional sushi dish topped with various ingredients. Fruit desserts change with the season and fruit used, so ask your chosen shop whether it serves white peach or grape options. Check menus in the area where you are staying that day, whether Okayama or Kurashiki.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk from Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter to Washuzan?

Do not combine them as one walking itinerary. Washuzan is in Kurashiki's Kojima area. These routes travel from Kurashiki Station via Okayama Station to Kojima, then change to a bus.

Which city should I use as a base to see both Okayama and Kurashiki?

For four nights, stay near Okayama Station and make return trips to each attraction, or spend two nights in Okayama before moving to Kurashiki for two nights. On the moving route's Day 3, the sunset programme follows the city transfer, so allow enough time to meet the monthly bus departure.

Do I need a regional JR pass for travel only within Okayama?

The four-night Okayama route returning to the same accommodation each day has JR base fares totalling JPY 2,760. These local and rapid journeys within the prefecture do not make the adult five-day Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass at JPY 17,000 cheaper. Compare additional travel to and from Kansai or Hiroshima separately. Admission, trams and Washuzan buses are outside this JR total.
