Should I stay in Okayama or Kurashiki?
For Okayama's castle/garden plus Kurashiki, consider a base near Okayama Station. For two days of street walks and museums, stay near Kurashiki Station. Washuzan's Seto Ohashi Bridge views require a separate bus connection from Kojima Station.
Start with the Okayama attractions you want to see
The castle and Korakuen are in Okayama City; the canal quarter, Ohara Museum and folkcraft museum are in Kurashiki. Seto Ohashi Bridge views are at Washuzan in Kojima. Kibitsu Shrine requires a separate JR trip to Kibitsu Station followed by a walk.
Itineraries by trip length
Look near Okayama Station for castle/garden sightseeing, or near Kurashiki Station for more time walking old streets and visiting museums. With more days, compare itineraries adding Kibitsu Shrine or Washuzan. Arrange onward travel from the place where your final day's sightseeing ends.
2 days, 1 night
For separate days at Okayama Castle and Korakuen, stay one night near Okayama Station. For Kurashiki's old streets and Ohara exhibitions, choose accommodation near Kurashiki Station. Both include day-two sightseeing, so do not suit a morning departure.
3 days, 2 nights
For castle/garden sightseeing, Kurashiki street walks and Kibitsu worship, stay two nights in Okayama. For Ohara/folkcraft exhibitions and Washuzan sunset, consider two nights in Kurashiki. The sunset bus requires a matching operating day and monthly departure time.
4 days, 3 nights
With three nights in Okayama, combine Ohara exhibitions and Washuzan sunset, or give Kurashiki streets and the folkcraft museum a day each. Include the sunset program when day three falls on a Friday, Saturday or day before a public holiday, returning to Kojima Station on the same bus.
5 days, 4 nights
For different days at Kurashiki streets and Ohara Museum from one base, stay four nights in Okayama. To spend two days in Kurashiki, split your stay into two nights each in Okayama and Kurashiki. To take the sunset bus on the day-three base move, reach Kojima Station for the monthly departure time. Omit Washuzan that day if late.
Where should I stay?
Overnight bases and sightseeing areas
Okayama City's castle and garden are close together. Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a walk from a station in another city. Washuzan is in Kurashiki City's Kojima area, rather than beside the historical quarter. Kibitsu Shrine is a separate rail trip west of Okayama City. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are excluded from these itineraries.

Choose your accommodation and arrival/departure stations
To keep one base, stay near Okayama Station for return trips to Kurashiki, Kibitsu and Kojima. One-night B and two-night B stay near Kurashiki Station for two days of streets and exhibitions. Four-night B moves from two nights in Okayama to two in Kurashiki. These itineraries do not stay overnight in Kojima; if using it as your base, recalculate return routes and costs.

Compare prefecture JR fares with wider passes on matching scope
Four-night A's JR base fares total ¥2,760: two Kurashiki round trips ¥1,320, Kojima return ¥1,020 and Kibitsu return ¥420. That itinerary's ¥6,420 subtotal also includes admission, streetcars and the sunset program; do not compare the whole subtotal with a JR pass.
The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs ¥17,000 for five days for adults. If riding only this itinerary's local/rapid trains within the prefecture, these JR costs alone do not make the pass cheaper. For additional Shinkansen or limited-express travel from Kansai or Hiroshima, compare actual sections, seats and use dates again. These streetcars, Shimoden buses and facility admissions are not counted as included in the pass.
Washuzan connects from Kojima Station by a temporary daytime service or a separate sunset program. The ¥520 daytime one-day pass and ¥540 sunset bus are different tickets. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are outside this southern itinerary; additional travel there is excluded from current costs.

Recalculate against coverage and use dates when adding trains to/from Kansai or Hiroshima. Okayama streetcars, Kojima-origin Washuzan buses and admission are not counted as JR pass inclusions.

Sunset at Washuzan and return to Kojima Station
From Okayama Station, take a Seto Ohashi Line local train stopping at Kojima and go to stop 5 in front of the station. Choose JR services around the sunset program's monthly departure time for Fridays, Saturdays and days before public holidays. If the operating day does not fit or JR connections are too tight after its scheduled return, omit the sea visit and rest in Okayama. The sunset program visits Sanbyakuzan and Washuzan viewpoints, then returns to Kojima Station. Each viewpoint stop allows about 15 minutes; the fare is ¥540. Follow the official monthly departure/return table. No reservation is required, but you cannot board if full; omit the visit if you have not arranged alternative transport. Follow crew instructions for walking onsite. When the program bus returns to Kojima Station, take an Okayama-bound local train. Choose a JR service allowing time to prepare for boarding after the bus's scheduled return. Stay in Okayama tonight.

Frequently asked questions
Can I walk from Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter to Washuzan?
Do not combine them as one walking itinerary. Washuzan is in Kurashiki City's Kojima area. This itinerary takes trains from Kurashiki Station via Okayama Station to Kojima Station, then changes to a bus.

Which city should be my base to see both Okayama and Kurashiki?
For four nights, return from each attraction to the same accommodation near Okayama Station, or stay two nights in Okayama followed by two in Kurashiki. The move itinerary visits the sunset program after traveling between cities on day three, requiring enough time for the monthly bus departure.
