Where should you stay: Okayama or Kurashiki?

Consider Okayama Station for the castle, garden and Kurashiki together. Stay near Kurashiki Station for two days of street walks and art museums. Washuzan’s Seto Ohashi views are a separate bus connection from Kojima.

Choose the Okayama attractions you want to see first

See castle and Korakuen in Okayama, canal streets, Ohara and Folkcraft in Kurashiki, and Seto Ohashi views at Kojima’s Washuzan. Kibitsu worship needs a separate JR journey followed by walking from Kibitsu Station.

Itineraries by trip length

Consider Okayama Station for castle and garden, or Kurashiki Station for old streets and art. With more days, compare Kibitsu or Washuzan routes. Plan onward travel from your final sightseeing area.

1 night, 2 days

Stay 1 night near Okayama for castle and Korakuen on separate days, or near Kurashiki for old streets and Ohara. Both have sightseeing on day 2, so they do not suit a morning departure.

2 nights, 3 days

Stay 2 nights in Okayama for castle, garden, Kurashiki streets and Kibitsu worship. For Ohara, Folkcraft and Washuzan sunset, consider 2 nights in Kurashiki. The sunset bus needs a matching operating day and monthly departure.

3 nights, 4 days

With 3 nights in Okayama, choose Ohara and Washuzan sunset, or separate Kurashiki street and Folkcraft days. Add the sunset programme when day 3 falls on Friday, Saturday or the day before a public holiday; the same bus returns to Kojima.

4 nights, 5 days

Stay 4 nights in Okayama for separate Kurashiki streets and Ohara days from one hotel. For two days based in Kurashiki, split the stay into 2 nights in each city. Day 3’s hotel move must leave enough time to reach Kojima for the monthly sunset departure. If late, omit Washuzan that day.

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas

Okayama’s castle and garden are close together. Kurashiki’s historic quarter is a walk from a station in another city. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area, away from the historic quarter. Kibitsu Shrine is a separate rail trip west of Okayama; northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are outside these routes.

Choose accommodation, arrival and departure stations

For one hotel, stay near Okayama Station and make return trips to Kurashiki, Kibitsu and Kojima. Two- and three-day option B stays near Kurashiki Station for streets and exhibitions. Five-day option B moves from 2 nights in Okayama to 2 in Kurashiki. No route stays in Kojima; if choosing that base, recalculate return travel and costs.

Compare nearby transport and passes

Match coverage when comparing local JR fares with wider passes

Five-day option A’s basic JR fares are two Kurashiki returns JPY 1,320, Kojima return JPY 1,020 and Kibitsu return JPY 420, totalling JPY 2,760. Its JPY 6,420 subtotal also includes admission, trams and the sunset programme; do not compare the whole subtotal with a JR pass.

The Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass costs JPY 17,000 per adult for 5 days. These local/rapid journeys within the prefecture alone do not make it cheaper. Recompare actual sections, seats and dates when adding Shinkansen, limited express or other travel to Kansai/Hiroshima. Trams, Shimoden buses and admission are excluded from this pass calculation.

Washuzan connects from Kojima by temporary daytime buses or a separate sunset programme. The JPY 520 daytime pass and JPY 540 sunset ticket differ. Northern Tsuyama/Hiruzen are outside these southern routes, with extra journeys excluded from current costs.

The Okayama castle/garden route adds admission and return trams; the Kurashiki route adds Ohara’s joint ticket. Intercity JR is excluded from the one-night subtotals below. For Kojima, Kibitsu or hotel moves, check each day’s separate JR/bus costs and accommodation, meals and airport extras.

Five-day option A’s Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu JR basic fares total JPY 2,760. Compared with Kansai–Hiroshima’s JPY 17,000 adult five-day pass, those local/rapid journeys alone are cheaper as ordinary tickets. Recalculate valid areas and dates if adding trains to Kansai or Hiroshima. City trams, Kojima–Washuzan buses and admission are excluded from JR pass coverage in this calculation.

From an Okayama hotel, choose separate JR returns to Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu. The Washuzan sunset programme connects by bus at Kojima; check an Okayama-bound train after the return bus. Hotel-move routes distinguish the move’s one-way journey from sightseeing-day returns.

Washuzan sunset trip from Kojima and back

From Okayama, take a Seto Ohashi Line local service stopping at Kojima, then reach stand 5. Match JR to the monthly sunset departure on Fridays, Saturdays or days before public holidays. If the operating day or return connection does not fit, omit the coast and rest in Okayama. The programme visits Sanbyakuzan and Washuzan, allowing about 15 minutes each before returning to Kojima, for JPY 540. Follow official monthly outward and return times. No reservation is needed, but you cannot board if full; omit the visit if no alternative transport is arranged. Follow crew instructions for walking. After returning to Kojima, take an Okayama-bound local train with enough boarding preparation time after the bus. Stay in Okayama again.

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk from Kurashiki’s quarter to Washuzan?

Do not combine them as one walking route. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area. This route travels Kurashiki → Okayama → Kojima by JR, then changes to a bus.

Open the official Kurashiki quarter guideWashuzan Visitor Centre fees, opening and car-park accessOfficial sunset bus monthly return schedule and boarding guide

Which city is a better base for seeing both Okayama and Kurashiki?

For 4 nights, choose return trips from one Okayama hotel or 2 nights in Okayama followed by 2 in Kurashiki. The hotel-move route adds a sunset programme on day 3 after changing cities, so leave enough time for its monthly departure.

Do you need a wider JR pass for travel only within Okayama?

The four-night route returning daily to an Okayama hotel has basic JR fares totalling JPY 2,760. These local/rapid journeys alone are cheaper than the adult five-day Kansai–Hiroshima Pass at JPY 17,000. Compare extra travel to Kansai or Hiroshima separately.
