Okayama Korakuen Garden

岡山後楽園

Walk among lawns and ponds for garden views. Compare the keep-and-garden joint ticket if also visiting Okayama Castle. Night opening happens only on specified dates and needs a separate check from daytime visits.

  • AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 500 for adults aged 15–64, excluding junior and senior school students, or JPY 200 for visitors aged 65+. Senior high school pupils and younger enter free until 31 March 2027; senior pupils need student ID. The castle joint ticket costs JPY 800.
  • Hours and closuresThe garden opens from 07:30 to 18:00 from 20 March to 30 September, with entry until 17:45, and from 08:00 to 17:00 from 1 October to 19 March, with entry until 16:45. Events can change hours.
  • Getting thereWalk about 25 minutes from Okayama Station. By tram, take a Higashiyama-bound service to Shiroshita, then walk about 10 minutes. The official guide’s roughly 4-minute tram ride excludes waiting and walking.

Inside black-fronted Okayama Castle, learn about castle lords and the surrounding town. Choose a park walk alone or paid keep exhibitions. Compare the joint ticket if also visiting Korakuen.

  • AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 500 for visitors aged 15+. Junior high school pupils and younger enter free. The Korakuen and keep joint ticket costs JPY 800.
  • Hours and closuresThe keep opens from 09:00 to 17:30, with entry until 17:00. It closes on 29–31 December, with possible temporary closures for severe weather or inspections.
  • Getting thereTake a Higashiyama-bound tram from Okayama to Shiroshita, then walk towards the castle. Castle and garden lie across the river from each other; follow facility maps.

White-walled buildings line this canal district. Walk lanes, browse shops and rest along the way. You can visit streets without museums; each shop and facility follows its own opening days.

  • AdmissionThe official introduction does not identify a district-wide admission ticket. Museums, sightseeing boats and activities charge separately.
  • Hours and closuresStreet walks and shop opening hours differ. Check sightseeing boat departure times and cancellations for your date separately.
  • Getting thereThe official walk from Kurashiki’s south side to the quarter entrance is about 10 minutes. This differs from the museum’s roughly 15-minute access to Ohara’s main building. JR travel and waiting are extra.

Ohara Museum of Art

大原美術館

Combine a historic-quarter walk with Western paintings, crafts and Asian art. The main building and Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall have different hours.

  • AdmissionThe standard ticket costs JPY 2,000, or JPY 500 for primary, junior and senior school pupils under 18. Preschool children enter free. It covers the main building, Craft Art and Asian Art Gallery, and Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall. The annex is closed long term.
  • Hours and closuresThe main building opens from 09:00 to 17:00 in March–November, with entry until 16:30, and from 09:00 to 15:00 in December–February, with entry until 14:30. It normally closes on Mondays but opens on public and substitute holidays, and daily in August. Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall has different hours: 10:00–16:00 in March–November and 10:00–15:00 in December–February.
  • Getting thereFrom Kurashiki’s south exit to the main building at 1-1-15 Chuo, the museum gives about 15 minutes on foot. This differs from the quarter entrance’s 10-minute walk. Hotel-to-station walking is extra.

Washuzan Observation Deck

Mount Washuzan鷲羽山

Choose Washuzan for elevated views of Seto Ohashi and the islands. If waiting for sunset, plan your stay around transport back to Kojima Station. Use the camera link for its view of the Seto Inland Sea and islands from Washuzan. It cannot establish the state of the whole facility or whether you can visit.

  • AdmissionViewpoint walks and Visitor Centre admission are free. The daytime bus day pass costs JPY 520 for adults or JPY 260 for children and differs from the sunset programme ticket. These four- and five-day Washuzan routes use the JPY 540 sunset programme instead. Taxis and meals cost extra.
  • Hours and closuresThe Visitor Centre opens from 09:00 to 17:00 in April–September and from 09:00 to 16:30 in October–March. It closes from 29 December to 3 January. Safe outdoor viewpoint access depends on local conditions.
  • Getting thereFrom Kojima stand 4, take a bus towards the second observation deck and alight at 鷲羽山第二展望台. Walk about 5 minutes to the viewpoint. Check whether the current temporary diversion applies on your date. The Visitor Centre is a different destination, about 10 minutes uphill from the car park. Return via Obatake towards Kojima Station.
  • Using the sunset busThe separate sunset programme leaves Kojima stand 5 on Fridays, Saturdays and days before public holidays. Adults and children both pay JPY 540, with about 15 minutes at each of two viewpoints before returning to Kojima. Check the monthly outward and return times. No reservation is needed, but full buses cannot take more passengers. This differs from the daytime pass; clear views or sunset colours are not guaranteed.

Kibitsu Shrine

Kibitsujinja Shrine吉備津神社

Kibitsu Shrine’s long corridor follows the terrain. Walk about 10 minutes from Kibitsu Station for worship and shrine buildings. Distinguish it from similarly named Kibitsuhiko Shrine when navigating.

  • Fees and reservationsOrdinary worship is allowed freely during gate hours, but the current FAQ lists no admission amount. Paid prayers start at JPY 5,000 per wish and are excluded from this route.
  • Opening hoursWorship is available from 05:00 to 18:00. Goshuin shrine-stamp reception ends at 16:00, distinct from worship hours.
  • Getting thereFrom Okayama, take the JR Kibi Line (Momotaro Line) towards Soja to Kibitsu, then walk about 10 minutes. The Japanese shrine guide’s train estimate is 17 minutes; JR search examples are 15–18 minutes one way. Actual date-specific schedules and waiting are separate. Return from the same station towards Okayama.
  • Visit scopeThe main sanctuary interior is not open for ordinary visits. Suggested corridor and grounds time is 60–90 minutes, not an official standard visit duration.

See tableware, textiles and everyday objects in converted rice storehouses. Choose this museum for everyday crafts rather than Ohara’s paintings.

  • AdmissionAdmission costs JPY 1,200 for adults, JPY 500 for senior high school and university students or JPY 300 for primary and junior pupils. Prices can vary with exhibitions. Groups of 20 or more require advance reservations.
  • Hours and closuresThe museum opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with reception until 16:30. It closes on Mondays, or the next day after a public-holiday Monday. Golden Week and Obon exceptions and the 29 December–1 January closure apply; follow facility notices for exhibition changes and temporary weather-warning closures.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from Kurashiki’s south side towards the quarter. Address: 1-4-11 Chuo, Kurashiki. Use the official area map and return on foot to the same station.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Ohara ticket also admit you to Kurashiki Folkcraft?

No. Ohara’s standard JPY 2,000 ticket covers its main building, Craft Art and Asian Art Gallery, and Kojima Torajiro Memorial Hall. Folkcraft is separate, with standard adult admission starting at JPY 1,200, subject to exhibition changes.

Do all three Ohara buildings have the same hours?

In March–November, the main building opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30, while the Memorial Hall opens from 10:00 to 16:00. In December–February, the main building opens from 09:00 to 15:00, with last entry at 14:30, while the Memorial Hall opens from 10:00 to 15:00.
