Sensoji and the zoo, or a garden and shrine?
For a temple and zoo, stay in Ueno and visit Sensoji and Ueno Zoo on separate days. For a garden and shrine, stay in Shinjuku and visit Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu on separate days. These plans suit trips with time to sightsee from the first afternoon and still reach the airport after the final-day visit.

Choose this itinerary only if the zoo is open on day 2 and you have enough time afterwards for the airport journey. Check official opening information for Monday, New Year and public-holiday exceptions. If the zoo is closed or you need to leave for the airport in the morning, this two-sight plan will not work as written. After a late day 1 arrival, choosing either Sensoji or the zoo on day 2 gives you more time. The verified paid-item subtotal is JPY 956 by IC card (600 + 356), or JPY 960 with paper tickets. It excludes special temple openings, prayer services, souvenirs, meals, luggage storage, accommodation, flights, airport transport and separate temple activities.
Included: Ueno Zoo admission JPY 600 + return Ginza line travel between Ueno and Asakusa (JPY 356 by IC card or JPY 360 with paper tickets).
Extra costs and conditions: JR, Tobu, airport transport, station-to-hotel travel, meals and accommodation are excluded from this subtotal.

- Airport arrival station → Around Shinjuku station
From Haneda, compare taking Keikyu to Shinagawa, then changing to the JR Yamanote line towards Shibuya and Shinjuku. At Shinjuku, use your accommodation’s recommended exit.
- Shinjuku station South Exit → Shinjuku Gate and the same accommodation
Walk about ten minutes from the South Exit to Shinjuku Gate. This itinerary does not use the subway to reach the garden. Enter before last admission, walk and rest in the garden, then leave through Shinjuku Gate and return along the same route. Adult admission is JPY 500. From 1 October to 14 March, last admission is 16:00 and the garden closes at 16:30. Afterwards, have dinner in Shinjuku and return to your accommodation. Check Ministry of the Environment guidance for closures and reservation requirements. A late arrival or closure makes this day 1 garden visit impractical.
This itinerary assumes accommodation within walking distance of JR Shinjuku’s South Exit and Shinjuku-sanchome subway station. If you arrive late or the garden is closed, leave out the garden and have a meal in Shinjuku.
Day 2 · Meiji Jingu, then return to Shinjuku

- Shinjuku-sanchome (F13) → Meiji-jingumae (F15) and the shrine’s main sanctuary
Shinjuku-sanchome and JR Shinjuku are different stations. Adult one-way fare is JPY 178 by IC card or JPY 180 for a paper ticket; the official journey search gives a representative ride time of about five minutes. At F15, use exit 2 and find the southern entrance on the Harajuku side. Official shrine access lists about one minute from the station to the entrance, followed by at least another ten minutes to the main sanctuary. Platform-to-exit walking and waiting are extra. Visit and walk through the forest in the morning, rest, then return via the southern entrance and exit 2. The paid garden and museum are excluded.
