Choose Senso-ji and the zoo, or a garden and shrine?

For a temple and animals, stay in Ueno and give Senso-ji and Ueno Zoo separate days. For a garden and shrine, choose Shinjuku with Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu on separate days. These plans suit an afternoon start on day one and enough time to reach the airport after sightseeing on departure day.

Senso-ji and Ueno Zoo

Stay one night in Ueno, visit Senso-ji on day one and the zoo on day two. This works if you can start sightseeing on the first afternoon and still have time to reach the airport after sightseeing the next day.

Day 1: worship and a walk through Senso-ji

Start at Senso-ji, then browse Nakamise. From Narita Airport, reserve a Skyliner bound for Keisei Ueno from your terminal's railway station and get off at the last stop.

  1. Airport arrival station → Around Ueno Station

Keisei Ueno and JR Ueno are different stations, so follow your hotel's guidance for the correct station and exit. From Haneda, compare a Keikyu ride to Shinagawa followed by a JR train stopping at Ueno. At Haneda Terminal 3, follow the arrivals area's “Keikyu Railways” signs to the ticket gates and platform. At other terminals, follow that terminal's rail guidance.

  2. Ueno Station, Ginza Line → Asakusa Station

Board toward Asakusa. The adult one-way fare is JPY 178 with an IC card or JPY 180 with a paper ticket. The train ride takes about five minutes.

  3. Asakusa Station → Senso-ji Main Hall

Walk from Asakusa through Kaminarimon → Nakamise → Hozomon → the Main Hall. The temple lists about a five-minute walk from Ginza Line Asakusa Station; allow extra time for browsing shops and walking through ticket gates.

  4. Senso-ji Main Hall and grounds → Worship, walk, and take a break

Visit the hall and walk through the grounds in the afternoon, taking a seated break along the way. The Main Hall closes at 5:00 p.m., so avoid missing it by eating first.

  5. Asakusa Station → Ueno Station and the same hotel

Return to Ueno on the Ginza Line toward Shibuya. The one-way fare is again JPY 178 with an IC card or JPY 180 with a paper ticket. After worship and dinner, return using the Asakusa Station timetable for your date. Follow your hotel's exit guidance for the walk back.

Finish worship before the Main Hall closes on day one. Afterward, have dinner in Asakusa or return to Ueno to eat.

Walk from the Park Exit side of Ueno Station to the zoo's main gate.

  1. Ueno hotel and Park Exit → Zoo main gate

    Zoo main-gate access

  2. Ueno Zoo main gate → Animals and rest breaks

Visit after the 9:30 a.m. opening and take breaks between exhibits. Adult admission is JPY 600; last entry is 4:00 p.m. and the zoo closes at 5:00 p.m.

  4. Around Ueno Station → The same Ueno hotel

Return to your Ueno hotel after the visit and collect stored luggage. Check the departure station of your booked airport train before setting out. JR Ueno and Keisei Ueno are different stations.

  5. Ueno hotel → Booked airport train station and flight terminal

For the Narita-bound Skyliner, go to Keisei Ueno and board your reserved service. Get off at Narita Airport Station for Terminal 1 or Airport Terminal 2 Station for Terminals 2 and 3. For Terminal 3, allow additional time from the station to the terminal. For Haneda, compare JR from Ueno to Shinagawa followed by a Keikyu service stopping at your terminal. Work backward from your required airport-arrival time and sightsee only if you have enough time.

Choose this plan only if you can enter the zoo on day two and still have enough time for airport travel. Check official guidance for Monday, New Year's, and post-holiday closure exceptions. Do not choose this two-attraction plan unchanged on a zoo closure day or if you need to leave for the airport in the morning. After a late arrival on day one, choosing either Senso-ji or the zoo on day two gives you more time. The verified paid-item subtotal is JPY 600 + JPY 356 = JPY 956 with an IC card, or JPY 960 with paper tickets. Special temple openings, prayer services, souvenirs, meals, storage, hotels, flights, airport transportation, and separately charged temple activities are excluded.

Subtotal for verified paid items: JPY 956 with IC card / JPY 960 with paper tickets

Included: Ueno Zoo admission of JPY 600 plus a Ginza Line round trip between Ueno and Asakusa: JPY 356 with an IC card or JPY 360 with paper tickets.

Extra costs and conditions: JR, Tobu, airport travel, transportation from the station to your hotel, meals, and accommodation are excluded.

Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu

Stay one night in Shinjuku, visiting Shinjuku Gyoen on day one and Meiji Jingu on day two. Give the garden and shrine separate days, then collect stored bags at your hotel before departing for the airport.

Day 1: an afternoon walk in Shinjuku Gyoen

From Narita Airport, check a Narita Express (N’EX) service stopping at Shinjuku and reserve your seat. Get off at JR Shinjuku Station and use the exit recommended by your hotel.

  1. Airport arrival station → Around Shinjuku Station

From Haneda, compare Keikyu to Shinagawa followed by the JR Yamanote Line toward Shibuya and Shinjuku. At Shinjuku, use the exit recommended by your hotel.

  2. Shinjuku Station south exit → Gyoen Shinjuku Gate and the same hotel

Walk about 10 minutes from the south exit to Shinjuku Gate; this itinerary does not use the subway to reach the garden. Enter before last admission, walk and rest in the garden, then leave through the same gate and retrace your route. Adult admission is JPY 500. October 1–March 14: last admission at 4:00 p.m., closing at 4:30 p.m. Afterward, have dinner in Shinjuku and return to your hotel. Check Ministry of the Environment guidance for closures and reservation conditions. A late arrival or closure can prevent a garden visit on day one.

This plan assumes a hotel within walking reach of JR Shinjuku's south exit and subway Shinjuku-sanchome Station. For a late arrival or garden closure, omit the garden and have dinner in Shinjuku.

Day 2: Meiji Jingu, then back to Shinjuku

From Shinjuku-sanchome, board a Fukutoshin Line train toward Shibuya that stops at F15.

  1. Shinjuku-sanchome (F13) → Meiji-jingumae (F15) and the main shrine

Shinjuku-sanchome and JR Shinjuku are different stations. The one-way fare is JPY 178 with an IC card or JPY 180 with a paper ticket; the official search shows a representative ride of about five minutes. At F15, use Exit 2 and find the south entrance on the Harajuku side. Official shrine guidance lists about one minute from the station to the entrance, followed by at least another 10 minutes to the main shrine. Allow extra time between platforms and exits and for waits. Worship and walk through the forest in the morning, take a break, then return to the south entrance and Exit 2. This plan excludes the paid garden and museum.

  2. Meiji-jingumae (F15) → Shinjuku-sanchome (F13) and the same hotel

Return toward Shinjuku-sanchome, Ikebukuro, or Wakoshi and get off at F13. For through services toward Seibu or Tobu destinations, confirm the train stops at F13. The one-way fare is again JPY 178 with an IC card or JPY 180 with a paper ticket. Return to your Shinjuku hotel to collect stored bags. Have lunch only if there is enough time before airport travel.

  3. Shinjuku hotel → Booked airport train station and flight terminal

For Narita, take your reserved airport-bound Narita Express from JR Shinjuku. Get off at Narita Airport Station for Terminal 1 or Airport Terminal 2 Station for Terminals 2 and 3. For Haneda, take the JR Yamanote Line toward Shibuya and Shinagawa, then transfer at Shinagawa to an airport-bound Keikyu service. Confirm it stops at your terminal. Add travel from the hotel to each platform and access to Terminal 3; sightsee only if you can meet your airline's advised airport-arrival time.

Match the garden's opening days to day one, followed by the shrine on day two. Shrine gates follow seasonal hours; October hours are 5:40 a.m.–4:40 p.m. A morning visit gives you time for the forest paths before closing. The verified paid-item subtotal is JPY 500 for the garden + JPY 356 for round-trip subway travel = JPY 856 with an IC card, or JPY 860 with paper tickets. Special use of the grounds, meals, storage, hotels, flights, and airport transportation are excluded. If you use only the verified subway round trip in either two-day itinerary, individual fares of JPY 356/360 cost less than the JPY 1,000 24-hour tourist ticket.

Included: Shinjuku Gyoen admission of JPY 500 plus a Fukutoshin Line round trip between Shinjuku-sanchome and Meiji-jingumae: JPY 356 with an IC card or JPY 360 with paper tickets. Walk to the garden.

Extra costs and conditions: JR, Tobu, airport travel, transportation from the station to your hotel, meals, and accommodation are excluded.
