Yamaguchi trip planning: stay in the east, centre or west?

For Akiyoshi-do Cave and Rurikoji's five-storey pagoda in Yamaguchi city, consider accommodation near Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Neither attraction is beside the station; each needs a bus or JR journey. For Karato Market and the Kanmon Strait, stay near Shimonoseki Station. If starting with Kintaikyo Bridge, compare an itinerary with the first night in Iwakuni.

Show more categoriesShow fewer categories

Start with the Yamaguchi sights you want to see

Compare Iwakuni's bridge and park in the east, the cave, pagoda and footbath in the centre, and Shimonoseki's market, aquarium and undersea tunnel in the west. Cave and pagoda itineraries stay in Shin-Yamaguchi; strait itineraries stay in Shimonoseki.

Itineraries by trip length

For the cave and pagoda, explore the Akiyoshi-do and Yamaguchi city itinerary. For the market and strait, choose Shimonoseki. To include Kintaikyo, consider starting in Iwakuni and moving to another area. Choose the places first, then compare overnight bases and travel days.

2 days / 1 night

Stay in Shin-Yamaguchi for Akiyoshi-do and Rurikoji's pagoda, or Shimonoseki for Karato Market and the Kanmon tunnel. Match the market day to the sushi event. Late arrival or a morning departure on day two means reducing sightseeing.

3 days / 2 nights

For Kintaikyo, the park, Akiyoshi-do and Rurikoji, move accommodation from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi. For separate market, tunnel and Treasure Hall days, stay two nights in Shimonoseki. The adult Iwakuni → Shin-Yamaguchi local train fare of JPY 1,690 is included in option A's subtotal; add return cave bus fares separately.

4 days / 3 nights

One night in Iwakuni followed by two in Shin-Yamaguchi gives the pagoda and cave separate days. Visit the cave the day after moving accommodation. For the aquarium, market, tunnel and Akama-jingu, stay three nights in Shimonoseki and return to the same accommodation each day.

5 days / 4 nights

For Kintaikyo, Karato Market and the Kanmon tunnel, move west with one night in Iwakuni, two in Shin-Yamaguchi and one in Shimonoseki. For Kaikyokan, Akama-jingu's Treasure Hall, the cave and footbath, start with two nights in Shimonoseki, then two in Shin-Yamaguchi. The itinerary starting in Shimonoseki omits the market sushi event, so it does not need to match event days. The Iwakuni-start option finishes at Shimonoseki Station; the Shimonoseki-start option finishes at Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Choose the ending station that suits your onward city.

Where should you stay?

Places to stay and sightseeing areas

Shin-Yamaguchi Station is a JR hub in Yamaguchi city; Akiyoshi-do is in Mine city. Iwakuni lies in the east of the prefecture and Shimonoseki in the west. Walking all the way through the Kanmon pedestrian tunnel takes you outside Yamaguchi Prefecture to Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Choosing accommodation and arrival and departure stations

Stay near Shin-Yamaguchi Station for the cave, pagoda and Yuda Onsen, or near Shimonoseki Station for the market, aquarium and pedestrian tunnel. Itineraries starting at Kintaikyo spend the first night in Iwakuni before moving to Shin-Yamaguchi. For departures from Shin-Iwakuni or Shin-Shimonoseki, add travel from your accommodation's local station to the Shinkansen station.

Check dates and transport when planning

Cave admission varies by visiting date

Adult Akiyoshi-do admission is normally JPY 1,600, or JPY 1,350 in December–February. The specified 2026 peak dates, 27 April–7 May and 1 July–31 August, cost JPY 1,900. The ranges in one-night A, two-night A, three-night A and four-night A/B subtotals reflect this seasonal admission difference, not a complete travel budget including all transport. For another year, check that year's fees.

Open official Akiyoshi-do information

Add transport excluded from the subtotal

Adult JR local train fares are JPY 240 one way or JPY 480 return for both Shin-Yamaguchi–Yamaguchi and Shin-Yamaguchi–Yuda-Onsen; JPY 1,690 one way Iwakuni → Shin-Yamaguchi; and JPY 1,170 one way in either direction between Shin-Yamaguchi and Shimonoseki. Each cost table uses its actual number of rides. These assume separate tickets for each section, differing from through-ticket fares and stopover conditions or Shinkansen fares.

The return Bocho Bus fare between Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Akiyoshi-do remains excluded. If the official online search will not open, give the Shin-Yamaguchi desk or Yamaguchi office your departure and arrival stops and date to confirm it. Accommodation, meals, airport travel and luggage storage cost extra.

Compare regional passes separately from attraction buses

The adult seven-day Sanyo-San'in pass costs JPY 23,000; the seven-day JR West All Area Pass costs JPY 26,000. Both official guides list the Shin-Osaka–Hakata Sanyo Shinkansen and JR local and rapid trains in their valid areas. The All Area Pass covers a wider area, including the Tsuruga–Joetsumyoko Hokuriku Shinkansen; travelling only in Yamaguchi is not a reason to choose the more expensive pass.

The tables include adult local train tickets bought separately for each section. If adding Shinkansen travel or other regions, compare all JR journeys and ordinary base-fare and limited-express tickets for your dates with the pass price. No savings have been calculated from the current subtotals alone. Sanden Kotsu, Bocho Bus and Iwakuni Bus fares, plus cave, bridge and aquarium admission, are separate from JR passes in these itineraries.

Adding Hagi is outside the current eight itineraries and cost tables. Plan transport and returns from Shin-Yamaguchi or Shimonoseki and the areas you will walk in Hagi separately. These intercity itineraries connect eastern Iwakuni, central Shin-Yamaguchi and Mine, and western Shimonoseki.
