Where to stay in Yamaguchi: east, centre or west?

For Akiyoshido and Rurikoji’s five-storey pagoda in Yamaguchi City, consider staying near Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Neither attraction is beside the station: each needs a separate bus or JR journey. Stay near Shimonoseki Station for Karato Market and the Kanmon Strait, or compare a first night in Iwakuni if you want to start at Kintaikyo Bridge.

Start with the Yamaguchi attractions you want to see

Compare the bridge and park in eastern Iwakuni, the cave, pagoda and footbath in central Yamaguchi, and the market, aquarium and underwater tunnel in western Shimonoseki. Cave/pagoda courses stay in Shin-Yamaguchi; strait courses stay in Shimonoseki.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose an Akiyoshido/Yamaguchi City course for the cave and pagoda, or a Shimonoseki course for the market and strait. To add Kintaikyo Bridge, consider starting in Iwakuni and moving elsewhere. Choose your attractions first, then compare bases and moving days.

1 night, 2 days

Stay in Shin-Yamaguchi for Akiyoshido and Rurikoji’s pagoda, or Shimonoseki for Karato Market and the Kanmon underwater tunnel. Match the market visit to a sushi-event day. Reduce sightseeing if arriving late or departing on the second morning.

2 nights, 3 days

Move from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi to visit Kintaikyo Bridge and the park, then Akiyoshido and Rurikoji’s pagoda. Alternatively, spend two nights in Shimonoseki to visit the market, tunnel and Treasure Hall on separate days. Course A includes the JPY 1,690 adult Iwakuni→Shin-Yamaguchi local-train fare. Add the return Bocho Bus fare to the cave separately.

3 nights, 4 days

One night in Iwakuni followed by two in Shin-Yamaguchi lets you visit the pagoda and cave on different days. Make the cave return trip the day after changing accommodation. Alternatively, spend three nights in Shimonoseki, returning to the same accommodation after separate days at the aquarium, market, tunnel and Akama Shrine.

4 nights, 5 days

For Kintaikyo Bridge, Karato Market and the Kanmon underwater tunnel, move west with one night in Iwakuni, two in Shin-Yamaguchi and one in Shimonoseki. For Kaikyokan, Akama Shrine’s Treasure Hall, Akiyoshido and the footbath, spend two nights in Shimonoseki then two in Shin-Yamaguchi. The Shimonoseki-start course excludes the sushi event, so needs no matching event day. The Iwakuni-start course ends at Shimonoseki Station; the Shimonoseki-start course ends at Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Choose an ending station convenient for your onward city too.

Places to stay and sightseeing areas

Shin-Yamaguchi Station is Yamaguchi City’s JR hub; Akiyoshido is in Mine City. Iwakuni is in the prefecture’s east and Shimonoseki in its west. Walking the entire Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel takes you into Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, outside Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Check when choosing travel dates and transport

Cave admission varies by visiting date

Adult Akiyoshido admission is normally JPY 1,600, or JPY 1,350 in December–February. The specified 2026 peak periods, 27 April–7 May and 1 July–31 August, cost JPY 1,900. The ranges for courses 1-night A, 2-night A, 3-night A and 4-night A/B reflect this admission difference, not a full trip budget including every journey. Check that year’s table if visiting in another year.

Open Akiyoshido’s official guide

Add transport excluded from the subtotals

Adult JR local-train fares: Shin-Yamaguchi–Yamaguchi JPY 240 one way/JPY 480 return; Shin-Yamaguchi–Yuda Onsen JPY 240 one way/JPY 480 return; Iwakuni→Shin-Yamaguchi JPY 1,690 one way; Shin-Yamaguchi–Shimonoseki JPY 1,170 one way in either direction. Cost tables use the course’s actual ride counts and separate tickets for each segment. Through-ticket fares, stopover conditions and Shinkansen charges require separate checks.

The return Bocho Bus journey between Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Akiyoshido is still excluded. If the official online search does not open, give the station information centre or Yamaguchi office your stops and travel date to confirm both fares. Accommodation, meals, airport transfers and luggage storage are separate.

Compare regional passes separately from attraction-access buses

Adult passes: Sanyo-San’in Pass JPY 23,000 for 7 days; JR West All Area Pass JPY 26,000 for 7 days. Both official guides cover the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and JR local/rapid trains within their valid areas. The All Area Pass extends further, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Joetsu-Myoko; travelling in Yamaguchi alone is not a reason to choose the more expensive pass.

Course cost tables use adult JR local-train fares for separate segments. If taking the Shinkansen or adding other regions, compare all planned JR journeys, ordinary fares and limited express charges with pass prices. No savings are calculated from the current subtotals alone. Sanden Kotsu, Bocho Bus and Iwakuni Bus journeys, and cave, bridge and aquarium admission, are separate from JR passes in these courses.

Adding Hagi requires a separate itinerary and budget beyond these 8 courses. Plan travel and return services from Shin-Yamaguchi or Shimonoseki and the area you will walk in Hagi. The intercity courses here link eastern Iwakuni, central Shin-Yamaguchi and Mine, and western Shimonoseki.
