Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine · 嚴島神社

At Itsukushima Shrine, view the torii towards the sea from the corridors. High tide brings water around the shrine and torii; low tide exposes ground around the gate.

How to get to Itsukushima Shrine

From Hiroshima Station, take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni and get off at Miyajimaguchi Station. Walk about 10 minutes to the passenger terminal, then take the JR ferry for about 10 minutes to Miyajima. The shrine is about a 15-minute walk from the island ferry landing. Allow time for walking, ferry waits and the crossing in addition to the train journey. Follow the one-way route inside the shrine.

Visiting tips

For a closer approach to the torii

Walking beneath the torii depends on that day's water levels and on-site conditions. Follow access guidance even if the ground looks exposed.
